Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen-Positive Manifestations of Chronic Beryllium Lung Disease.

Three years after prostatectomy, a 78-year-old man with initial high-risk prostate cancer and new increasing prostate-specific antigen levels underwent Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT. Imaging revealed PSMA-positive pelvic, ascending retroperitoneal and left supraclavicular lymph nodes consistent with metastases. Additionally, there was PSMA-positive lymphadenopathy (hilar and mediastinal) and pulmonary changes (fibrotic and nodular) in which histopathology excluded metastases. A lymphocyte proliferation test was indicative of beryllium sensitization. Chronic beryllium lung

Chronic Periodontitis Does Not Impact Serum Levels of Prostate-specific Antigen.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Chronic periodontitis (CP) has already been associated with altered PSA values in men undergoing biopsy. This study addressed the impact of CP treatment on PSA screening. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-two asymptomatic men presenting for CP treatment were prospectively enrolled. Total (t)PSA, free (f)PSA and %PSA were determined (n=47) before and after therapy. Pre- and post-therapy values were correlated pairwise regarding patients and dental characteristics. RESULTS: Median age was 54 years (SD=±7.7 years) and mean tPSA was 1.3 ng/ml (±1.9 ng/ml). tPSA and fPSA correlated line

Prevalence of delayed clinician response to elevated prostate-specific antigen values.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of delayed response to an abnormal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) value. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of prostate cancer cases diagnosed between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2005, in a rural Department of Veterans Affairs health care system serving 44,000 veterans across 2 states. Clinician response was defined as a reference to the elevated PSA result in clinical notes, orders for further evaluation, treatment of presumed prostatitis, or a urology visit or referral. Delay was measured as days between an abnormal PSA result and clinician

Quantification of prostate-specific antigen immunoreactivity in human breast cyst fluids.

The frequency of gross cystic breast disease in premenopausal women and its possible association with increased breast cancer risk emphasises the importance of investigations relating to breast cyst fluid composition. In order to contribute to a better analysis of this medium, we have measured the presence of prostate-specific antigen immuno-reactivity in sixty-four human breast cyst fluids. Data analyses show that 35% of samples presented a level of this antigen < 0.05 micrograms/L, whereas 42 out of 64 cysts show a significant increase in the mean value of metabolically active apocrine cysts

Multi-institutional evaluation of prostate specific antigen dynamics after simple prostatectomy.

Men remain at risk for prostate cancer after simple prostatectomy (SP). However, prostate cancer (PCa) screening after SP is challenging given the lack of data directing PSA surveillance and what PSA values should trigger further investigation in this setting. This study aimed to compare initial postoperative PSA measurements and PSA kinetics after SP in patients with benign pathology (benign prostate hyperplasia; BPH) to those with prostate cancer. We performed a retrospective review of all simple prostatectomies performed at two tertiary care centers in the United States between 2014 and 202

Capillary Blood for Prostate-specific Antigen Testing: The PSA-CAP Study.

UNLABELLED: Risk-adapted prostate cancer (PC) screening is currently based on a combination of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, risk assessment, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Classical venous blood sampling is usually performed by health care professionals, which may reduce participation in future population-based screening programmes due to limited resources. The PSA-CAP study (NCT06626386) evaluated the feasibility of using capillary blood from fingertip sampling compared with venous blood for PSA determination, in order to facilitate access for PSA testing. This prospective

Changes in prostate specific antigen value in patients with COVID-19.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate changes in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHOD: Male patients who were admitted to our flu outpatient clinic with cough, fever, weakness, and bone and joint pain were evaluated. The acute phase reactants of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, ferritin, and fibrinogen were measured both at the time the patients first presented at the clinic and 1 month after recovery from COVID-19 infection. PSA and free PSA were also measured at the same time. The difference in acute phase reactants and PSA

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in men with Prader-Willi syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder typically characterized by body composition abnormalities, hyperphagia, behavioral challenges, cognitive dysfunction, and hormone deficiencies. Hypogonadism is common but knowledge on potential side effects of testosterone replacement is limited, in particular, the long-term effects on behavior and PSA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective case studies of seven men, median age 46 years, with genetically verified PWS, testosterone treated hypogonadism and available PSA values were included. Long-term follow-up of PSA was accessi

Immunohistochemical Reactivity of Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen in Salivary Gland Tumors.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is overexpressed in the prostate gland and prostate cancer. PSMA has been recently used in positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging and targeted alpha-radiation therapy (TAT) for prostate cancer. Recently, the tubarial gland, a type of minor salivary gland that is described as a new organ situated in the pharynx, is reported to express PMSA. Here, we studied the expression of PSMA in common benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. We performed immunohistochemistry for PSMA in 55 salivary

Prostate-specific antigen dynamics predict individual responses to intermittent androgen deprivation.

Intermittent androgen deprivation therapy (IADT) is an attractive treatment for biochemically recurrent prostate cancer (PCa), whereby cycling treatment on and off can reduce cumulative dose and limit toxicities. We simulate prostate-specific antigen (PSA) dynamics, with enrichment of PCa stem-like cell (PCaSC) during treatment as a plausible mechanism of resistance evolution. Simulated PCaSC proliferation patterns correlate with longitudinal serum PSA measurements in 70 PCa patients. Learning dynamics from each treatment cycle in a leave-one-out study, model simulations predict patient-specif

Lumbar Osteophyte Avid on 68Ga-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen PET/CT.

A 75-year-old man with recently diagnosed high-risk prostate cancer was referred for primary staging with Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT. The scan revealed intense Ga-PSMA uptake in a lumbar osteophyte on the right side of level L2/L3, whereas several other spinal osteophytes showed no Ga-PSMA uptake. MRI findings in the L3 vertebra was consistent with a benign Modic type 1 lesion, but MRI showed no signs of malignancy in the osteophyte with high Ga-PMSA uptake. This case presents an osteophyte as an addition to the list of potential benign pitfalls to be aware of when int

Is prostate-specific antigen a reliable marker for uterine leiomyoma detection?

BACKGROUND: Now it is accepted that prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is expressed extra prostatically and it is clear that many hormonally regulated female tissues show detectable PSA levels. This study was conducted due to differences of view between researchers about the role of PSA in some women diseases. This study was designed to evaluate the clinical implication of serum PSA measurement in diagnosis or management of patients with uterine myoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a case-control study. A total of 224 patients included in this study. Serum specimens were isolated and were stor

Relationship between dietary factors and prostate-specific antigen in healthy men.

INTRODUCTION: There is little evidence indicating whether dietary factors influence prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentrations. We examined whether nutritional factors, including energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake were associated with PSA in healthy men. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated 13,594 men aged 50 years and over who visited a hospital for a routine health checkup between 2003 and 2007. Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. We performed a multiple linear regression to examine the association between PSA and dietary intake. RESULTS: After

Prostate-specific membrane antigen: a new potential prognostic marker of osteosarcoma.

Previous studies have demonstrated that the expression of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is restricted to endothelium from tumor-associated neovasculature. But the expression of PSMA in osteosarcoma and its clinical significance are unknown. Using immunohistochemical analysis and quantum dot probes, we found that 46.7% (21/45) of the osteosarcoma showed positive staining for PSMA while no PSMA staining in osteofibrous dysplasia. The expression and localization of PSMA was confirmed by CD34 staining. More importantly, the expression of PSMA is correlated with tumor size, pulmonary me

Effect of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy on serum prostate specific antigen concentration.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) on the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) concentration. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 22 male patients with a mean age of 52.9 years (range 37-67 years) were treated with SWL for distal ureteral calculi close to the ureteral orifice. Serum samples were drawn for measurement of PSA values just before (PSA-1) and 45 minutes (PSA-2) and 7 days (PSA-3) after the session. None of the patients had urinary tract infection or any abnormal finding on digital rectal examination. The SWL sessions were performed with

Prostate-specific antigen is increased in female patients with Cushing's disease.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a serine protease with chymotripsine-like enzymatic activity, produced primarily by the prostate gland. It is widely used as a marker of androgen sensitive-prostate cancer. Likewise, women with androgen-dependent hirsutism have increased serum PSA levels. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether female patients with Cushing's disease had increased serum PSA concentrations. We studied 22 patients with active Cushing's disease. Twelve out of 22 patients were also evaluated after remission of the disease. Forty normal women with no signs of hirsut

Prostate-specific antigen-enhanced testing and risk stratification for chemoprevention trials.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing could be used to identify men who are at higher future risk of developing clinical prostate cancer or to diagnose prostate cancer earlier in high-risk groups, such as black men or those with a family history of the disease. These cohorts then could be offered chemopreventive clinical trial participation opportunities. The Physicians' Health Study and other longitudinal studies have shown that even between a PSA level of 1.0 and 4.0 ng/mL, the risk of future prostate cancer is incrementally increased. Department of Defense Studies of young men between 15

Prostate-specific membrane antigen expression in normal and malignant human tissues.

Prostate-specific membrane antigen is a type II membrane protein with folate hydrolase activity produced by prostatic epithelium. The expression of this molecule has also been documented in extraprostatic tissues, including small bowel and brain. In the present study, an extensive immunohistochemical analysis was performed on a panel of well-characterized normal and malignant human tissues to further define the pattern of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) expression. Detectable PSMA levels were identified in prostatic epithelium, duodenal mucosa, and a subset of proximal renal tubules.

Prostate-specific antigen detection by ultrasensitive assay in samples from women.

BACKGROUND: The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) has been characterized as a specific prostate marker. Recent studies have indicated the existence of a PSA of nonprostatic origin detected in lactating women and breast tumors. METHODS: We have evaluated the presence of PSA by an ultrasensitive assay (COBAS CORE) in 252 serum and non serum samples from women. RESULTS: The results demonstrate the presence of PSA in 100% of the breast secretions, 81% of the breast cysts, 80% of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluids and 71% of the cytosols of breast cancer. Likewise, PSA was detected in 14% of the ser
