Psychometric evaluation of a screening question for persistent depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: About one in five patients with depression experiences a chronic course. Despite the great burden associated with this disease, there is no current screening instrument for Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD). In the present study, we examine a short screening test, the persistent depression screener (PDS), that we developed for DSM-5 PDD. The PDS is comprised of one question that is administered following an initial self-assessment for depression. METHODS: Ninety patients from an inpatient clinic/day clinic specialized in treating depression completed the PDS. They were also ass

The four faces of rumination to stressful events: A psychometric analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To increase the knowledge of rumination and its associations with stressful events, we explored the relationships between 4 types of rumination (brooding, reflection, intrusive, and deliberate rumination) in a sample of 750 adult participants who experienced a highly stressful event. We also explored the predictive value of the different types of rumination on posttraumatic stress symptoms and posttraumatic growth 6 months after the highly stressful event occurred. METHOD: Participants completed the Ruminative Response Scale and the Event-Related Rumination Inventory. Brooding and

Psychometric Properties of the Reconstructed Hamilton Depression and Anxiety Scales.

Although widely used, the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) discriminate poorly between depression and anxiety. To address this problem, Riskind, Beck, Brown, and Steer (J Nerv Ment Dis. 175:474-479, 1987) created the Reconstructed Hamilton Scales by reconfiguring HRSD and HARS items into modified scales. To further analyze the reconstructed scales, we examined their factor structure and criterion-related validity in a sample of patients with major depressive disorder and no comorbid anxiety disorders (n = 215) or with panic disorder and no co

[Psychometric approach of metacognition: Pilot study in clinical population].

BACKGROUND: Metacognition describes the process of thinking about one's own thought processes. This concept was introduced by Flavell in 1979 and has since been widely developed in the cognitive approach to mood and anxiety disorders. As it happens, many recent studies have underlined the links between metacognition and anxio-depressive symptoms, pointing out the interest of assessing its various dimensions. The short form of the Metacognitions Questionnaire is a brief multidimensional measure of a range of metacognitive processes and metacognitive beliefs about worry and cognition relevant to

Impulsivity and Panic Disorder: an exploratory study of psychometric correlates.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is associated with a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. However, the relationship between anxiety and impulsivity is not well explored. The objective of this study was to examine whether anxiety symptoms correlate with impulsivity in patients with panic disorder. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We examined 21 psychotropic drug-naove patients with panic disorder recruited from the outpatient setting. The severity of Panic Disorder was assessed with Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS)-clinical rating version. Impulsivity was evaluated with Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, 11th versi

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Vocational Fit Assessment (VFA).

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Vocational Fit Assessment (VFA) by examining its factor structure and subscale reliability. METHOD: This prospective cross-sectional study used two surveys (one for worker abilities and one for job demands) to collect the data needed for the psychometric evaluation of the VFA. Latent parallel analysis and ordinal exploratory factor analysis were used to iteratively refine VFA subscales. RESULTS: Ten unidimensional subscales emerged from factor analysis of VFA items: (1) Cognitive Abilities, (2) Communi

Anatomical and psychometric relationships of behavioral neglect in daily living.

Spatial neglect has been related to both cortical (predominantly at the temporal-parietal junction) and subcortical (predominantly of the superior longitudinal fasciculus) lesions. The objectives of this observational study were to specify the anatomical relationships of behavioral neglect in activities of daily living (N-ADLs), and the anatomical and psychometric relationships of N-ADLs on one hand and components of neglect (peripersonal neglect and personal neglect) and anosognosia on the other. Forty five patients were analyzed for behavioral difficulties in daily living (on the Catherine B

The Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire: development and psychometric properties.

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has suggested that metacognitions may play a role in smoking. The goal of the current set of studies was to develop the first self-report instrument of metacognitions about smoking. METHOD: We conducted three studies with samples of smokers (n = 222, n = 143, n = 25) to test the structure and psychometric properties of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire and examined its capacity to predict smoking behaviour. RESULTS: Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a four-factor solution: positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation, positi

Emotional Verbal Learning Test: development and psychometric properties.

Memory deficits are a common feature of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Measures designed to evaluate memory in clinical populations have distinguished between memory for verbal and visual information; however, few tests assess the recall and recognition of emotional information, despite evidence suggesting that brain regions are differentially involved in memory for emotional and neutral stimuli and that affective disturbances are common in psychiatric and neurological disorders. The present study reports the test development and psychometric properties of the Emotional Verbal Learnin

The attitudes toward transgendered individuals scale: psychometric properties.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals are sexual and gender minorities subject to stigma in a heteronormative culture with binary gender role norms. Although much research has examined sexual stigma in the form of homophobia, or negative attitudes and reactions to homosexuals and homosexuality, little is known about the stigma experienced by transgendered individuals. Transgendered people are those whose gender identity (sense of oneself as a man or a woman) or gender expression (expression of oneself as a man or a woman in behavior, manner, and/or dress) differ from convention

The Caregiver Eating Messages Scale: Development and psychometric investigation.

Certain caregiver eating messages - restriction of food intake and pressures to eat - are associated with body dissatisfaction and eating disturbances among young girls. This study explored whether these messages are also associated with body attitudes and eating behaviors of young adult women and men. The Caregiver Eating Messages Scale was developed to measure this construct. Two studies (Ns=238, 288) indicated that it contained two factors (restrictive/critical messages and pressure to eat messages) and yielded internally consistent, stable, and valid scores. Both factors were positively re

The Dutch Claustrophobia Questionnaire: psychometric properties and predictive validity.

Fear of suffocation and fear of restriction are thought to underlie claustrophobia and can be assessed with the Claustrophobia Questionnaire (CLQ; Radomsky et al., 2001). A first study tested the psychometric properties of a Dutch version of the CLQ. Students (N=363) completed a Dutch translation of the CLQ and a set of other questionnaires assessing other specific fears, anxiety or depression. Results confirmed the two-factor structure and showed that the Dutch version of the CLQ has good psychometric properties. A second study tested the predictive validity of the Dutch CLQ. Participants (N=

Psychometric evaluation of a visual analog scale for the assessment of anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Fast-acting medications for the management of anxiety are important to patients and society. Measuring early onset, however, requires a sensitive and clinically responsive tool. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of a patient-reported Global Anxiety-Visual Analog Scale (GA-VAS). METHODS: Data from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of lorazepam and paroxetine in patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder were analyzed to assess the reliability, validity, responsiveness, and utility of the GA-VAS. The GA-VAS was completed at clinic visits and at home

The "repeater" phenomenon in migraine patients: a clinical and psychometric study.

BACKGROUND: Headache is one of the most common symptoms in an emergency department (ED), while migraine is the most frequently observed headache in this setting. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of clinical and psychometric variables on the repeater phenomenon, ie, patients who make at least 3 visits to the ED at least 1 week apart during a 6-month period. METHODS: According to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd edition (ICHD-II) criteria, we consecutively recruited Italian-speaking migraine subjects who came to the ED or outpatient service. All the

Development and psychometric evaluation of a quantitative measure of "fat talk".

Based on her anthropological research, Nichter (2000) concluded that it is normative for many American girls to engage in body self-disparagement in the form of "fat talk." The purpose of the present two studies was to develop a quantitative measure of fat talk. A series of 17 scenarios were created in which "Naomi" is talking with a female friend(s) and there is an expression of fat talk. College women respondents rated the frequency with which they would behave in a similar way as the women in each scenario. A nine-item one-factor scale was determined through principal components analysis an

[Psychometric evaluation of the German version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale].

BACKGROUND: Impulsive behavior is an important characteristic in a range of psychiatric disorders. A unanimous definition of impulsivity is still under discussion, but a questionnaire to measure it has been available for quite some time, i.e. the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 (BIS11). However, it lacks adequate psychometric characterization for German speakers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Control persons were recruited from the Munich city population. Patients with alcohol dependence, suicide attempts, and borderline personality disorders treated as inpatients at the Munich University Psy
