Disparities in access to healthy and unhealthy foods in central Massachusetts: implications for public health policy.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze geographic and income disparities in access to healthy foods in central Massachusetts. METHODS: We surveyed 106 (92% of all) food stores longitudinally in the study area between 2007 and 2010. We analyzed the geographic and temporal variations in community- and store-level healthy food availability indices (HFAI) and unhealthy food availability indices (UFAI) overall and by select store and community characteristics. RESULTS: Twenty-seven of 68 communities in the study area (39.7%) had no food store and 5 (8.3%) had one or few stores with very limited availability of h

Eligibility criteria in private and public coverage policies for BRCA genetic testing and genetic counseling.

PURPOSE: : Coverage policies for genetic services for hereditary cancers are of interest because the services influence cancer risk reduction for both persons with cancer and their family members. We compared coverage policies for BRCA genetic testing and genetic counseling among selected payers in the United States to illuminate eligibility criteria variation that may explain differential access by insurance type. We compared these policies with policies for breast cancer screening with magnetic resonance imaging to consider whether payers apply a unique policy approach to genetic services.

Improving Public Health Policy by Comparing the Public Response during the Start of COVID-19 and Monkeypox on Twitter in Germany: A Mixed Methods Study.

Little is known about monkeypox public concerns since its widespread emergence in many countries. Tweets in Germany were examined in the first three months of COVID-19 and monkeypox to examine concerns and issues raised by the public. Understanding views and positions of the public could help to shape future public health campaigns. Few qualitative studies reviewed large datasets, and the results provide the first instance of the public thinking comparing COVID-19 and monkeypox. We retrieved 15,936 tweets from Germany using query words related to both epidemics in the first three months of eac

Social cohesion in contexts of violence against women: evidence from Honduras and implications for public policy.

This cross-sectional, descriptive study assesses social cohesion among women in Honduras using microdata from the 2022 First National Specialized Survey on Violence Against Women and Girls (ENESVMN). Utilizing a multidimensional framework, the analysis examines relational, institutional, and normative variables based on an effective sample of 5,962 interviewed women. The normalized-weight results show that 27.1% (nominal 95% CI: 26.02-28.28) of participants exhibit high social cohesion, 26.6% (95% CI: 25.50-27.74) exhibit moderate cohesion, and 46.3% (95% CI: 45.00-47.53) exhibit low cohesion.

Public Policy Approaches to Addressing Adult Obesity: A Position Paper From the American College of Physicians.

Forty percent of U.S. adults have obesity, a complex condition determined by genetics, behavior, environment, and other modifiable and nonmodifiable factors. Obesity is associated with certain comorbid conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, and some cancer types, and may increase the severity of communicable illnesses, such as influenza. Treatments of obesity include behavioral modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgical procedures, but high cost and coverage restrictions are a substantial barrier for many patients. In this position paper, the American College

Formal and informal science-policy interaction during public health emergencies of international concern: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Interaction between science and policy might be a crucial asset for policy decisions during public health emergencies. Much work has been published about processes and forms of science-policy interaction on the one hand and challenges of public health emergency contexts on the other. However, more knowledge is needed to understand the challenges that arise when these two issues intersect. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review informed by the Johanna-Briggs-Institute protocol and searched seven databases to identify formal and informal approaches to organising science-policy inter

Using GIS Dashboards to highlight AMR data disparities in Africa for Policy, Research, and Public Health.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to pose a major public health threat across Africa, yet available surveillance data remain highly fragmented across private, public, and academic sources. This study analysed continent-wide AMR surveillance patterns by integrating datasets from multiple independent repositories and visualising them through interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) dashboards. The objective was to generate an integrated evidence base that highlights resistance patterns, surveillance disparities, reporting gaps, and opportunities for improved AMR monitoring across A

From period poverty to policy change: advancing menstrual health as a public health priority in Nigeria.

Period poverty, the lack of access to menstrual products, adequate sanitation, and reliable health information, continues to undermine the health, dignity, and opportunities of millions of girls and women in Nigeria. Closely linked to gender inequality, the problem is compounded by stigma, inadequate infrastructure, and economic barriers, especially for low-income and marginalized groups. While civil society initiatives and isolated government gestures exist, Nigeria still lacks a comprehensive national menstrual health policy. In contrast, countries such as Scotland, Kenya, and Colombia have

Effects of public policy interventions for environmentally sustainable food consumption: a systematic map of available evidence.

BACKGROUND: The global food system is inflicting substantial environmental harm, necessitating a shift towards more environmentally sustainable food consumption practices. Policy interventions, for example, information campaigns, taxes and subsidies and changes in the choice context are essential to stimulate sustainable change, but their effectiveness in achieving environmental goals remains inadequately understood. Existing literature lacks a comprehensive synthesis of evidence on the role of public policies in promoting sustainable food consumption. Our systematic map addressed this gap by

Undiagnosed attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among unionized drivers in Ghana: Public health and policy implications.

Road traffic accidents (RTA) are among the leading causes of mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Many males that drop out of school in Ghana, a population at risk for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), find employment by joining driver's unions. Moreover, the vehicles of Ghanaian unionized drivers are over-represented in fatal road accidents. Untreated ADHD has been linked with higher rates of RTAs. The objectives of this cross-sectional analysis is to determine the following among unionized drivers in Ghana: 1) the prevalence of ADHD, and 2) the association between self-reported AD

Addressing the critical health problem of adolescent substance use through health care, research, and public policy.

The use of addictive substances-tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs-during adolescence interferes with brain development and increases the risk of serious health and mental health conditions, including addiction. Yet, adolescents live in a culture in which family, social, community, and media influences regularly bombard them with pro-substance use messages, creating an environment in which substance use is considered an expected behavior, rather than a considerable health risk. To prevent the significant harm that falls to teens and young adults because of substance use, The National Center on

Newborn screening for human immunodeficiency virus infection in the Bronx, NY, and evolving public health policy.

New advances in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection continue to propel changes in public understanding of HIV infection and the administration of public health law. Over the past decade, New York State has moved from a policy of blind newborn screening for seroprevalence data to mandatory HIV testing as part of the statewide Newborn Screening (NBS) Program. A new statewide program of expedited HIV testing (48-hr turnaround results) of pregnant women and newborns (whose HIV status is unknown at the time of delivery) began in the summer of 1999. To better understand the impact this prog

A systematic workflow for utilizing and evaluating large language models in public health policy framing analysis.

BACKGROUND: For public health policy research, it is crucial to monitor policy debates to inform evidence-based policymaking. One popular method is to analyze the news for salient frames used to argue for or against a controversial topic. However, this method is time and resource-intensive since domain experts need to manually analyze relevant articles to identify frames. This study presents an approach for using large language models (LLMs) to extract frames and to systematically evaluate results. METHODS: Building on the results of a framing analysis of the German media debate about a tax o

Labor market inclusion of autistic adults in Brazil: bridging functional assessment, clinical practice, and public policy.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized in adulthood, yet unemployment and underemployment remain disproportionately high among autistic adults worldwide. Although Brazil has developed a comprehensive legal framework grounded in the biopsychosocial model of disability, including Law No. 12,764/2012, the Brazilian Inclusion Law (13,146/2015), and employment quota legislation, these advances have not consistently translated into sustainable workplace inclusion. This narrative review critically examines the Brazilian legal framework for labor inclusion of autistic adults, the li

Prompt-to-policy: Leveraging large language models to guide deep reinforcement learning in public health emergencies.

Rapid and effective decision-making is critical in public health emergencies, where resource allocation must balance multiple objectives under uncertain conditions. Traditional optimization methods often struggle with computational complexity and real-time, heterogeneous data. To address these challenges, we propose a hybrid intelligent agent combining an enhanced Double Deep Q-Network (D2QN-JDA) with large language models (LLMs). The D2QN-JDA improves learning stability and adaptability through joint state-action inputs, dynamic exploration rate, and adaptive reward normalization. The LLM com

Economic evaluation of population-level dementia prevention strategies in China: informing policy and public health action.

INTRODUCTION: While it has been postulated that population-based strategies targeting modifiable dementia risk factors are cost effective in high-income settings, their health and economic impact in China remains unclear. METHODS: A Markov model evaluated five interventions: salt substitution, smoke-free legislation, increased tobacco tax, sugar-sweetened beverage tax, and alcohol tax. Outcomes included dementia cases, deaths averted, life years gained, and lifetime cost-savings, assessed from a societal perspective over an infinite time horizon. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were perform

Public Health Nursing as Connective Infrastructure: A Health Policy Perspective on Family Homelessness and Health Equity.

Family homelessness is shaped by social and structural determinants of health, including poverty, housing insecurity, fragmented services, and unequal access to support. Families with infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to the health and developmental effects of housing instability. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are uniquely positioned at the interface of health services, family life, and community systems. Through universal reach, relational continuity, developmental surveillance, safeguarding, advocacy, and interagency coordination, PHNs help families remain connected to car
