Novel Iminocoumarin Derivatives: Synthesis, Spectroscopic and Computational Studies.

Three novel iminocoumarin derivatives with high quantum yield are synthesized from 3-benzimidazole substituted coumarin and different aromatic aldehydes. The photophysical behavior of the synthesized compounds was studied using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy in polar and non-polar solvents. The compounds show absorption maxima at around 450 nm and emission maxima at around 500 nm. The quantum yields of compounds in dichloromethane and chloroform are more than 0.90. The absorption, emission and quantum yield of compounds are dependent on the polarity of solvents. Along with an intense

Adversarial Quantum Channel Discrimination.

We introduce a new framework for quantum channel discrimination in an adversarial setting, where the tester plays against an adversary. We show that in asymmetric hypothesis testing, the optimal type-II error exponent is precisely characterized by a new notion of quantum channel divergence (termed the minimum output channel divergence). This serves as a direct analog of the quantum Stein's lemma in this new framework, and complements previous studies on "best-case" channel discrimination, thereby providing a complete understanding of the ultimate limits of quantum channel discrimination. Coupling Quantum Mechanical Modeling and Molecular Dynamics on Heterogeneous Supercomputers for Studying Distal Mutation Effects on Drug Binding in HIV-1.

Predicting how protein mutations affect drug binding remains a major challenge, particularly when the mutations are distal from the binding site. In this study, we introduce a coupled simulation workflow that combines classical molecular dynamics (MD) with high-throughput quantum mechanical (QM) analysis to reveal the electronic structure signatures of mutation-induced drug resistance in the HIV-1 protease. Our workflow leverages GPU-accelerated MD to generate conformational ensembles, and performs in operando linear-scaling density functional theory (DFT) calculations on selected frames paral

Hybrid quantum-classical neural networks for real-time fault detection in power systems.

As modern power systems continue to be integrated with renewable energy sources, the ability to detect faults in these systems quickly and accurately is becoming more sophisticated. A Hybrid Quantum Classical Neural Network (HQCNN) model is presented in this paper that addresses the real-time fault detection challenge in transmission systems. A classical feature extractor, in this case a 1D CNN, and a quantum circuit are combined by the model, which aids in the classification of faults. Evaluations were conducted on simulated IEEE 14 and 39-bus system and on approximately 800 real PMU fault ev

Modeling Peptides in Aqueous Ionic Liquid Mixtures: A Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Dynamics Study of Structural and NMR Properties.

In this pilot study, structural properties and 1H NMR chemical shifts of an Ala-Glu-Pro-Phe peptide dissolved in an aqueous solution and an aqueous mixture of the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate ionic liquid (IL) have been scrutinized using an integrated computational protocol based on classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approaches for NMR shielding constants. Two long-lived trans and cis Pro isomers of the tetrapeptide have been considered. MD simulations as long as 400 ns were found to be too short to ensure co

Quantum Christoffel Nonlinear Magnetization.

The Christoffel symbol is an essential quantity in Einstein's general theory of relativity. We discover that an electric field can induce a nonlinear magnetization in quantum materials, described by a Christoffel symbol defined in the Hilbert space of quantum states (quantum Christoffel symbol). Quite different from the previous scenarios, this orbital magnetization does not need spin-orbit coupling and inversion symmetry breaking. Through symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we identify a number of point groups and 2D material candidates (e.g., BiF_{3}, ZnI_{2}, and Ru_{4}Se_{

Topological Fermiology of gate-tunable Rashba electron gases.

By introducing first-order quantum phases as topological invariants, recent symmetry analysis-based theories have reinvigorated magnetic quantum oscillations as a versatile quantum probe for unfolding the Fermi surface topology along with the geometry information, i.e., topo-Fermiology. Here, we demonstrate the comprehensive topo-Fermiology of high-mobility Rashba two-dimensional electron gases with ultragate tunability of spin-orbit coupling parameter in few-layer black arsenic. The remarkable consistencies with the key theoretical predictions of period doubling in quantum oscillations, gate-

Going beyond gadgets: the importance of scalability for analogue quantum simulators.

Quantum hardware has the potential to efficiently solve computationally difficult problems in physics and chemistry to reap enormous practical rewards. Analogue quantum simulation accomplishes this by using the dynamics of a controlled many-body system to mimic those of another system; such a method is feasible on near-term devices. We show that previous theoretical approaches to analogue quantum simulation suffer from fundamental barriers which prohibit scalable experimental implementation. By introducing a new mathematical framework and going beyond the usual toolbox of Hamiltonian complexit

Statistical-gauge covariance in open quantum systems.

Statistical-gauge structures generated by current operators provide a symmetry-based description of forces and hyperforces in closed quantum statistical mechanics, but their status in open quantum dynamics remains largely unexplored. Here we develop a generalized statistical-gauge framework for Markovian open quantum systems governed by Lindblad evolution. The construction formulates statistical shifts in a smeared operator language, thereby avoiding singular local expressions while preserving the force and hyperforce content of the closed theory. Within this framework, the action of the Lindb

Modeling of magnesium-decorated graphene quantum dot nanostructure for trapping AsH3, PH3 and NH3 gases.

A magnesium-decorated graphene quantum dot (C24H12-Mg) surface has been examined theoretically using density functional theory (DFT) computations at the ωB97XD/6-311++G(2p,2d) level of theory to determine its sensing capability toward XH3 gases, where X = As, N and P, in four different phases: gas, benzene solvent, ethanol solvent and water. This research was carried out in different phases in order to predict the best possible phase for the adsorption of the toxic gases. Analysis of the electronic properties shows that in the different phases the energy gap follows the order NH3@C24H12-Mg < P

Why a Single Mutation Dims the Light: Local Chromophore Organization Modulates Fluorescence in smURFP.

Predicting mutation-induced photophysical changes in bilin-binding fluorescent proteins remains challenging. Here, we investigate the origin of fluorescence modulation in smURFP and its low-fluorescent-quantum-yield Y56R variant using classical MD simulations and QM/MM calculations. Comparison of multiple chromophore binding states supports a wild-type configuration involving A-ring attachment and chromophore reduction, whereas Y56R adopts the opposite orientation, revealing substantial plasticity of the chromophore pocket in response to a single mutation. The experimentally observed differenc

Neuronal Microtubules and Radiofrequency Waves: The Quantum Core of Human Consciousness, Memory, and Pathway to Memory Enhancement/Recovery.

A unifying theory of both human consciousness and memory is presented that is based on neuronal microtubules (MTs) being central to both, and different populations of pyramidal cells in neocortex and hippocampus being responsible for consciousness or memory. First, two quantum theories of consciousness are presented-the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch OR) theory of Penrose/Hameroff and the Environmental-Induced Decoherence Theory (EID) theory of Neven. A Hybrid (MT/EID) theory is proposed in the context of "consciousness"-dedicated pyramidal cells in Layer V of the cerebral cortex. This

Current-driven mechanical motion of double stranded DNA results in structural instabilities and chiral-induced-spin-selectivity of electron transport.

Chiral-induced-spin-selectivity of electron transport and its interplay with DNA's mechanical motion are explored in a double stranded DNA helix with spin-orbit-coupling. The mechanical degree of freedom is treated as a stochastic classical variable experiencing fluctuations and dissipation induced by the environment as well as force exerted by nonequilibrium, current-carrying electrons. Electronic degrees of freedom are described quantum mechanically using nonequilibrium Green's functions. Nonequilibrium Green's functions are computed along the trajectory for the classical variable taking int

Rotameric Heterogeneity of Conserved Tryptophan Is Responsible for Reduced Photochemical Quantum Yield in Cyanobacteriochrome Slr1393g3.

The red/green cyanobacteriochrome (CBCR) slr1393g3 exhibits a quantum yield of only 8 % for its forward photoconversion, significantly lower than other species from the same CBCR subfamily. The cause for this reduced photoconversion is not yet clear, although in the related NpR6012g4 dark-state structural heterogeneity of a paramount Trp residue has been proposed to cause the formation of nonproductive subpopulation. However, there is no such information on the equivalent residue in slr1393g3, W496. Here we use solid-state NMR to explore all possible sidechain rotamers of this Trp residue and

Using Hybrid PDI-Fe3O4 Nanoparticles for Capturing Aliphatic Alcohols: Halogen Bonding vs. Lone Pair-π Interactions.

In this study, Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) decorated with halogenated perylene diimides (PDIs) have been used for capturing VOCs (volatile organic compounds) through noncovalent binding. Concretely, we have used tetrachlorinated/brominated PDIs as well as a nonhalogenated PDI as a reference system. On the other hand, methanol, ethanol, propanol, and butanol were used as VOCs. Experimental studies along with theoretical calculations (the BP86-D3/def2-TZVPP level of theory) pointed to two possible and likely competitive binding modes (lone pair-π through the π-acidic surface of the PDI and a hal

Scalable Neural Decoder for Topological Surface Codes.

With the advent of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices, practical quantum computing has seemingly come into reach. However, to go beyond proof-of-principle calculations, the current processing architectures will need to scale up to larger quantum circuits which will require fast and scalable algorithms for quantum error correction. Here, we present a neural network based decoder that, for a family of stabilizer codes subject to depolarizing noise and syndrome measurement errors, is scalable to tens of thousands of qubits (in contrast to other recent machine learning inspired decode

Resolving Femtosecond Solvent Reorganization Dynamics in an Iron Complex by Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations.

The ultrafast dynamical response of solute-solvent interactions plays a key role in transition metal complexes, where charge transfer states are ubiquitous. Nonetheless, there exist very few excited-state simulations of transition metal complexes in solution. Here, we carry out a nonadiabatic dynamics study of the iron complex [Fe(CN)4(bpy)]2- (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) in explicit aqueous solution. Implicit solvation models were found inadequate for reproducing the strong solvatochromism in the absorption spectra. Instead, direct solute-solvent interactions, in the form of hydrogen bonds, are re

Chemical constitution of polyfurfuryl alcohol investigated by FTIR and Resonant Raman spectroscopy.

The actual chemical structure of polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) is still uncertain in spite of several studies on the topic, variations during the polymerization processes being one reason that must be addressed. The use of a limited set of analytical techniques is often insufficient to provide an exhaustive chemical characterization. Moreover, it is still not possible to exactly determine presence and amount of each specific functional group in the polymeric structure. We employed both Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Resonant Raman spectroscopy (RR), corroborated by quantum mec

Tropospheric degradation of 2-fluoropropene (CH3CFCH2) initiated by hydroxyl radical: Reaction mechanisms, kinetics and atmospheric implications from DFT study.

Degradation of hydrofluoro-olefins (HFOs) with oxidants plays a significant role in the troposphere. Thus, we have investigated detail theoretical calculations of hydroxyl radical (•OH) initiated oxidation of 2-fluoropropene (CH3CFCH2) using M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Here, we have considered different possible H-abstraction and OH addition for the degradation of CH3CFCH2 molecule. The potential energy analysis shows that OH-addition channels are more dominant than H-abstraction channels. The calculated reaction enthalpies (ΔrH°) and Gibbs free energies (ΔrG°) also suggest that OH-a

Improved efficiency and thermal stability of ternary all-small-molecule organic solar cells by NCBA as a third component material.

In this work, organic solar cells (OSCs) were fabricated with a blend of PC71BM and p-DTS-(FBTTh2)2 employed as a binary photoactive layer and with a dihydronaphthyl-based C60 bisadduct (NCBA) small-molecule acceptor used as a third component material. We demonstrate that the short-circuit current density (JSC), open-circuit voltage (VOC), fill factor (FF), power conversion efficiency (PCE), and thermal stability can all be enhanced simultaneously. In addition, the crystallinity can be finely optimized and the photon harvesting ability was enhanced for short-wavelength light by adjusting the N
