Web-based training course for evaluating radiological dose assessment in NRC's license termination process.

As part of the requirement for terminating the licenses of nuclear power plants or other nuclear facilities, license termination plans or decommissioning plans are submitted by the licensee to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for review and approval. Decommissioning plans generally refer to the decommissioning of nonreactor facilities, while license termination plans specifically refer to the decommissioning of nuclear reactor facilities. To provide a uniform and consistent review of dose modeling aspects of these plans and to address NRC-wide knowledge management issues, the NRC,

Exposure assessment and other challenges in non-ionizing radiation studies of childhood leukaemia.

Studies of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and the development of childhood leukaemia face unique difficulties. EMF are imperceptible, ubiquitous, have multiple sources, and can vary greatly over time and distances. Childhood leukaemia and high average exposures to magnetic fields are both quite rare. Thus, a major challenge in EMF epidemiology is the small number of highly exposed cases and the necessity for retrospective assessment of exposure. Only studies designed to minimize bias while maximizing our ability to detect an association, should one exist, would have a potential to contribute to

Radiation safety and quality assurance in US dental hygiene programmes, 1990.

A 1990 survey of US dental hygiene programmes indicated substantial advances in radiation safety and quality assurance techniques since 1985. None the less, further improvements are possible to minimize operator and patient exposure to ionizing radiation from dental radiography. Conversion to faster receptor speed, the use of rectangular collimation and more frequent performance of quality assurance tests represent possible improvements for some establishments.

Operators' radiation exposure reduction during cardiac catheterization using a removable shield.

Cardiac catheterization through radial access is associated with significant ionizing radiation exposure for the operator. We aimed at evaluating whether a removable shield placed upon the patient could impact favorably on annual radiation exposure for the operator. We designed a pre-post study comparing radiation exposure in a total of five operators under standard protection procedures (first period) and after applying a removable shield (second period). Each period included all the procedures performed in 1 year. Radiation exposure was measured through three dosimeters on each operator. A t

Collaborative activities in a biological dosimetry network for radiation emergencies in South Korea.

PURPOSE: Biological dosimetry is an essential analytic method to estimate the absorbed radiation dose in the human body by measuring changes in biomolecules after radiation exposure. Joint response in a network to mass-casualty radiation incidents is one way to overcome the limitations of biological dosimetry, sharing the workload among laboratories. This study aimed to investigate the current performance, collaborative activities and technical advances of the Korea biodosimetry network (K-BioDos), and suggest the future directions toward successful joint response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A su

The convergence approach may be critical to improving early situational awareness in hostile radioactive environments.

This study explores the impact of a simulated radiological dispersal device (RDD) event in an urban area on young adults around 20 years old. The RDD releases radioactive Cs-137 (7.0E+3 Ci), a common industrial sterilization source. The study aims to demonstrate that combining computational codes and epidemiological models can produce valuable data to guide initial actions when confronting a hostile radioactive environment. The HotSpot Health Physics and RESRAD-RDD codes were used in the simulation to evaluate the event's initial phase. The codes were executed together, and the HotSpot output

Radiofrequency radiation injures trees around mobile phone base stations.

In the last two decades, the deployment of phone masts around the world has taken place and, for many years, there has been a discussion in the scientific community about the possible environmental impact from mobile phone base stations. Trees have several advantages over animals as experimental subjects and the aim of this study was to verify whether there is a connection between unusual (generally unilateral) tree damage and radiofrequency exposure. To achieve this, a detailed long-term (2006-2015) field monitoring study was performed in the cities of Bamberg and Hallstadt (Germany). During

External dosimetry and personnel monitoring.

The early history of our profession, as well as the discoveries that form its foundations, provide an interesting background on which to assess our progress in measuring exposure to ionizing radiation (i.e., dosimetry). One of the first challenges faced by scientists working with radiation and radioactivity was appropriate measurement techniques. has provided an excellent review of the history and development of radiation detection techniques and devices. In the early 20th century, some of these techniques were extended to measurements of the doses received by the individual scientists althoug
