Strongyloides cf fuelleborni in Papua New Guinea: epidemiology in an isolated community, and results of an intervention study.

Strongyloides cf fuelleborni was found to be distributed homogeneously with respect to space and time in a semi-nomadic community in Papua New Guinean rainforest. The parasite predominantly infects children, reaching 60% prevalence in the first year of life and peaking around 80% at five years of age. Egg loads follow a similar pattern but peak earlier (at 20 months) and fall off more sharply. The few infected adults have very light infections as measured by egg count. In the first few months of life, incidence was estimated as 50% per month. Following treatment, incidence in older children wa

Assessing the feasibility of fly based surveillance of wildlife infectious diseases.

Monitoring wildlife infectious agents requires acquiring samples suitable for analyses, which is often logistically demanding. A possible alternative to invasive or non-invasive sampling of wild-living vertebrates is the use of vertebrate material contained in invertebrates feeding on them, their feces, or their remains. Carrion flies have been shown to contain vertebrate DNA; here we investigate whether they might also be suitable for wildlife pathogen detection. We collected 498 flies in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, a tropical rainforest and examined them for adenoviruses (family Adenov

Enzootic and epizootic rabies associated with vampire bats, peru.

During the past decade, incidence of human infection with rabies virus (RABV) spread by the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) increased considerably in South America, especially in remote areas of the Amazon rainforest, where these bats commonly feed on humans. To better understand the epizootiology of rabies associated with vampire bats, we used complete sequences of the nucleoprotein gene to infer phylogenetic relationships among 157 RABV isolates collected from humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, including bats, in Peru during 2002-2007. This analysis revealed distinct geographic s

Interannual changes in atmospheric oxidation over forests determined from space.

The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the central oxidant in Earth's troposphere, but its temporal variability is poorly understood. We combine 2012-2020 satellite-based isoprene and formaldehyde measurements to identify coherent OH changes over temperate and tropical forests with attribution to emission trends, biotic stressors, and climate. We identify a multiyear OH decrease over the Southeast United States and show that with increasingly hot/dry summers the regional chemistry could become even less oxidizing depending on competing temperature/drought impacts on isoprene. Furthermore, while global m

Monkeypox: From Emerging Trends to Therapeutic Concerns.

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease. Monkeypox was first reported in humans about 54 years ago. Prior to the global outbreak, monkeypox was endemic to the rainforests of central and western African countries. In the last three years, increasing numbers of human monkeypox have been reported from various countries. Responding to the severity, monkeypox was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization. In the absence of approved drugs or clinical studies, repurposed drugs and therapeutic medical countermeasures effective against other orthopoxviru

Human monkeypox: history, presentations, transmission, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Human monkeypox is a zoonotic infection that is similar to the diseases caused by other poxviruses. It is endemic among wild rodents in the rainforests of Central and Western Africa, and can be transmitted via direct skin contact or mucosal exposure to infected animals. The initial symptoms include fever, headache, myalgia, fatigue, and lymphadenopathy, the last of which is the main symptom that distinguishes it from smallpox. In order to prevent and manage the disease, those who are infected must be rapidly diagnosed and isolated. Several vaccines have already been developed (e.g., JYNNEOS, A

Lobomycosis in Soldiers, Colombia.

Lobomycosis is a disease that is endemic to the Amazon rainforest and is caused by the still uncultured fungus Lacazia loboi. This disease occurs in loggers, farmers, miners, fishermen, and persons living near coastal rivers of this region. We report 6 soldiers in Colombia in whom lobomycosis developed after military service in the Amazon area. The patients had nodular and keloid-like lesions on the face, neck, trunk, and limbs. The duration of illness ranged from 2 years to 15 years. The initial diagnosis was leishmaniasis on the basis of clinical manifestations and direct smear results, but

An epidemic outbreak of canine cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia caused by Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania panamensis.

The largest recorded outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia's history occurred during 2005-2009 in soldiers of the Colombian Army, with ~40,000 cases. This outbreak was caused by the influx of military personnel into the jungle with the mission of combat illicit crops and the guerrilla. The soldiers remain for long periods within the rainforest and are exposed to the bite of infected sand flies. During the military activities, soldiers work with dogs specially trained to detect landmines, and therefore, dogs are also exposed to the infected sand flies and show high incidence of cutane

Emerging threat of Oropouche virus: Clinical features, experimental models, and virulence.

Oropouche fever, caused by Oropouche virus (OROV) and transmitted primarily by Culicoides midges, has historically been considered a neglected tropical disease characterized by an acute, self-limiting febrile illness and occasional meningoencephalitis, mostly within or along the Amazon rainforest. However, the explosive 2023-2025 outbreak expanded well beyond the Amazon region, including into the Caribbean, and was associated with a broader clinical spectrum encompassing meningoencephalitis, Guillain - Barré syndrome, persistent viral infection, lethal hemorrhagic fever, fetal loss, and neonat

Host nutritional status: the neglected virulence factor.

The emergence of new infectious diseases and old diseases with new pathogenic properties is a burgeoning worldwide problem. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are just two of the most widely reported recent emerging infectious diseases. What are the factors that contribute to the rapid evolution of viral species? Various hypotheses have been proposed, all involving opportunities for virus spread (for example, agricultural practices, climate changes, rainforest clearing or air travel). However, the nutritional status of the host, until recent

Description of a new genus and species of Cerophytidae (Coleoptera: Elateroidea) from Africa with a cladistic analysis of the family.

The family Cerophytidae is revised to include Afrocerophytum vix gen. nov. and sp. nov., from the tropical rainforest of western Africa. Afrocerophytum and A. vix (type locality: Ivory Coast, Tai Region, neighborhood of Gouleako village) are described and illustrated. A key to the Cerophytidae genera is provided. The new genus is distinguished by four autapomorphies: anterior edge of phallobase rounded and not emarginate, base of tergite IX not fused at middle with the base of sternite IX, basal region of penis weakly constricted, and coxites divided into proximal and distal lobes. Development of vaccines for Marburg hemorrhagic fever.

Marburg (MARV) and Ebola viruses (EBOV) emerged from the rainforests of Central Africa more than 30 years ago causing outbreaks of severe and, usually, fatal hemorrhagic fever. EBOV has garnered the lion's share of the attention, fueled by the higher frequency of EBOV outbreaks, high mortality rates and importation into the USA, documented in such popular works as the best-selling novel 'The Hot Zone'. However, recent large outbreaks of hundreds of cases of MARV infection in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola with case fatalities approaching 90% dramatically highlight its lethal p

An outbreak of leptospirosis among Peruvian military recruits.

Acute undifferentiated febrile illnesses are common in tropical developing countries but are difficult to diagnose on clinical grounds alone. Leptospirosis is rarely diagnosed, despite evidence that sporadic cases and epidemics continue to occur worldwide. The purpose of this study was to diagnose an outbreak of acute undifferentiated febrile illness among Peruvian military recruits that developed after a training exercise in the high jungle rainforest of Peru. Of 193 military recruits, 78 developed an acute febrile illness with varied manifestations. Of these, 72 were found to have acute lept

Genetic epidemiology of host predisposition microfilaraemia in human loiasis.

Evidence is accumulating from experimental and human studies that genetic factors are involved both in the control of infectious diseases and in the regulation of infection levels and clinical presentation. So far few studies have investigated the role of these genetic factors in human infection by the filarial parasite Loa loa. We present a segregation analysis on 74 nuclear families who live in the tropical rainforest of southern Cameroun and are exposed to homogeneous loiasis transmission. The results indicate that there is a genetic predisposition to be microfilaraemic and that predisposed

Metabolomic Characterization of 16 Malpighiaceae Species From Brazilian Biomes by UHPLC-MS/MS and PCA.

The Malpighiaceae family comprises approximately 1,500 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions and is recognized as a source of bioactive secondary metabolites. However, the metabolomic composition of many species remains poorly characterized. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize and compare the metabolomic profiles of 16 Malpighiaceae species collected from four Brazilian biomes (Amazon Rainforest, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, and Cerrado). Hydroethanolic leaf extracts were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (U

Antiplasmodial activity of tambjamines, dihydro-β-agarofurans and pyrroloazepines derived from Australian plant and marine species.

Malaria is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, with 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths estimated in 2023. While effective drug combinations are available to prevent and treat malaria, Plasmodium parasite drug resistance is compromising all current options. This situation means that new drugs that act on novel Plasmodium drug targets are needed. Natural products, including artemisinin, derived from Artemisia annua, and its derivatives, have been an important source of antimalarials. In this study we investigated a panel of 43 compounds from the NatureBank natural product library f

Progress Toward Onchocerciasis Elimination in Brazil.

The single onchocerciasis-endemic focus in the remote Amazon rainforest is shared by Brazil and Venezuela and affects primarily the indigenous Yanomami people. Regional elimination of onchocerciasis is challenged by the magnitude and inaccessibility of this area. In Brazil, 272 onchocerciasis-endemic communities are operationally organized through 21 health centers ("polos bases"). Mass drug administration of ivermectin began in 1995, with 36 effective biannual rounds (≥85% coverage of the eligible population) through 2022. The national on chocerciasis program maintains community-level monitor

Towards Communicative Justice in Health.

This article approaches care from a different angle by looking ethnographically at how it is shaped by structural differences in the power to control the circulation of knowledge. I focus on an investigation conducted by people classified as "indigenous", of an epidemic that killed 38 children and young adults in a Venezuelan rainforest. I trace how health/communicative inequities structured clinical interactions, documents, epidemiological investigations, news stories, and dialogues with healers, thwarting the identification of the epidemic, clinically identified as rabies. Although the Boliv

Venezuelan equine encephalitis in Panama: fatal endemic disease and genetic diversity of etiologic viral strains.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) is a reemerging, mosquito-borne viral disease of the neotropics that is severely debilitating and sometimes fatal to humans. Periodic epidemics mediated by equine amplification have been recognized since the 1920s, but interepidemic disease is rarely recognized. We report here clinical findings and genetic characterization of 42 cases of endemic VEE detected in Panama from 1961-2004. Recent clusters of cases occurred in Darien (eastern Panama) and Panama provinces (central Panama) near rainforest and swamp habitats. Patients ranged from 10 months to 48 year

Ancient parasites from endemic deer from "CUEVA PARQUE DIANA" archeological site, Patagonia, Argentina.

The narrow Andean-Patagonian temperate rainforest strip in the west of southern South America is inhabited by two endemic species of cervids, the southern pudu (Pudu puda) and the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), both cataloged as near threatened and threatened species, respectively. One of the possible causes of their declined number is the susceptibility to livestock diseases. Significant zooarchaeological records of both deer have been found throughout the Holocene from Patagonia. The present contribution reports the first paleoparasitological results obtained from coprolites of endemic deer
