Identification and remediation of reading difficulties based on successive processing deficits and delay in general reading.

Widespread learning problems among South African children are associated with the apartheid era and show a need for effective reading programs. In selecting these programs, it is useful to differentiate between children with dyslexia and children whose reading is poor because teaching was inadequate. In this study, the Woodcock Tests of Reading Mastery-Revised and tests modelled on the Cognitive Assessment System were used to define a group of children with deficits in successive processing associated with dyslexia and a group of children with general reading delay. There were two girls and fi

Reorganizing the instructional reading components: could there be a better way to design remedial reading programs to maximize middle school students with reading disabilities' response to treatment?

The primary purpose of this study was to explore if there could be a more beneficial method in organizing the individual instructional reading components (phonological decoding, spelling, fluency, and reading comprehension) within a remedial reading program to increase sensitivity to instruction for middle school students with reading disabilities (RD). Three different modules (Alternating, Integrated, and Additive) of the Reading Achievement Multi-Modular Program were implemented with 90 middle school (sixth to eighth grades) students with reading disabilities. Instruction occurred 45 min a d

Genome-wide classification of tumor-derived reads from bulk long-read sequencing.

DNA extracted from tissue samples typically derives from a complex mixture of cell types. Without single cell analysis, it has been generally impossible to determine the cell type of origin for most molecules. One clear example of this is in the complex milieu of a human neoplasm. Here, we develop ROCIT (https://github.com/tobybaker/rocit), a transformer-based model to classify the tumor or non-tumor origin of individual reads from bulk tumor samples sequenced with long-read whole genome sequencing. Using somatic mutations to derive training data, ROCIT uses read-level methylation patterns to

The Role of Visual Perception in Reading Across Fonts and Similar Words in Children with Reading Disabilities.

PURPOSE: This study examined associations between visual perceptual skills and reading performance in children aged 6-12 years, focusing on reading similar words and words in different fonts. METHODS: Forty-six children (mean age 8.3 ± 0.9 years; 24 and 22 with and without reading disabilities, respectively) were assessed. Visual discrimination, visual memory and form constancy were examined with the TVPS-3 (Test of Visual Perceptual Skills, 3rd version). Reading speed was measured using the TALEC test (Test d'Anàlisi de la Lectoescriptura en Català). Additionally, the reading speed and accur

Patterns of the left thalamus embedding into the connectome associated with reading skills in children with reading disabilities.

We examined how thalamocortical connectivity structure reflects children's reading performance. Diffusion-weighted MRI at 3 T and a series of reading measures were collected from 64 children (33 girls) ages 8-14 years with and without dyslexia. The topological properties of the left and right thalamus were computed based on the whole-brain white matter network and a hub-attached reading network, and were correlated with scores on several tests of children's reading and reading-related abilities. Significant correlations between topological metrics of the left thalamus and reading scores were o

The anatomical foundations of acquired reading disorders: a neuropsychological verification of the dual-route model of reading.

In this study we investigated the neural correlates of acquired reading disorders through an anatomo-correlative procedure of the lesions of 59 focal brain damaged patients suffering from acquired surface, phonological, deep, undifferentiated dyslexia and pure alexia. Two reading tasks, one of words and nonwords and one of words with unpredictable stress position, were used for this study. We found that surface dyslexia was predominantly associated with left temporal lesions, while in phonological dyslexia the lesions overlapped in the left insula and the left inferior frontal gyrus (pars oper

Old and new ways to study characteristics of reading disability: the case of the nonword-reading deficit.

Theoretical and computational models of reading have traditionally been informed by specific characteristics of disabled readers. One of the most frequently studied marker effects of developmental dyslexia is the nonword-reading deficit. Disabled readers are generally believed to show a specific problem in reading nonwords. This study presents a survey of frequently cited methods used to examine this effect by controlling general reading ability in various ways. An extensive analysis, however, shows that the majority of these methods (grade equivalents scores, the reading-level match design, a

The importance of morphemic awareness to reading achievement and the potential of signing morphemes to supporting reading development.

The ability to access and understand the meaning of multi-morphemic words is essential for age-appropriate literacy growth as well as for achievement in other participants, such as science and social studies, which are so print-dependent. This paper provides a theoretical basis for focusing on the morphology of English when teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing to read through a review of the literature on the role of morphology in reading for both hearing students and those with a hearing loss. In addition, the authors review the empirical literature on Signing Exact English (SEE)

A longitudinal study of the development of oral reading fluency in young children at risk for reading failure.

The purpose of this study was to examine the development of oral reading fluency in a sample of first-grade children. Using growth curve analysis, models of growth were identified for a combined sample of at-risk (AR) and not-at-risk (NAR) children, and predictors of growth were identified for the longitudinal AR sample in first and second grade. Large and serious differences in reading fluency growth between the AR and NAR samples were apparent early, replicating other reports. Theories of sight-word learning and reading fluency were supported, in that letter-sound fluency was a uniquely sign

An evaluation of the dyslexia training program: a multisensory method for promoting reading in students with reading disabilities.

The development of reading and spelling skills in students with dyslexia, by definition, is delayed and often remains delayed despite years of instruction. Three qualities are thought to facilitate reading development in these children: the provision of a highly structured phonetic-instruction training program with heavy emphasis on the alphabetic system, drill and repetition to compensate for short-term verbal memory deficits, and multisensory methods to promote nonlanguage mental representations. The Dyslexia Training Program, a remedial reading program derived from Orton-Gillingham methods,

The nonword reading deficit in developmental dyslexia: evidence from children learning to read German.

This study examined whether dyslexic children learning to read German show the same nonword reading deficit, which is characteristic of dyslexic children learning to read English (Rack, Olson, & Snowling, 1992), a deficit which is taken as evidence for a phonological impairment underlying dyslexia. Because the German writing system, in contrast to English, exhibits comparatively simple and straightforward grapheme-phoneme correspondences, the generality of the nonword reading deficit across different alphabetic systems seemed questionable. Actually, it was found that 10-year-old dyslexic child

Mitigation and detection of putative microbial contaminant reads from long-read metagenomic datasets.

Metagenomic sequencing of clinical samples has significantly enhanced our understanding of microbial communities. However, microbial contamination and host-derived DNA remain a major obstacle to accurate data interpretation. Here, we present a methodology called 'Stop-Check-Go' for detecting and mitigating contaminants in metagenomic datasets obtained from neonatal patient samples (nasal and rectal swabs). This method incorporates laboratory and bioinformatics work combining a prevalence method, coverage estimation and microbiological reports. We compared the 'Stop-Check-Go' decontamination sy

Long-Read Sequencing Outperforms Short-Read Sequencing in Detecting Most Structural Variations.

Structural variations (SV) are common in the cancer genome and play critical roles in regulating tumorigenesis. In the past decades, many SVs have been detected through analyses of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data generated mainly by Illumina paired-end short-read sequencing (SRS). Recent advances in long-read sequencing (LRS) techniques provide exciting opportunities for SV detection. However, a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of LRS and SRS in detecting SVs in a cancer genome is still lacking. Here, we performed WGS of the LNCaP prostate cancer cell line through LRS using the O

The Role of Neural and Genetic Processes in Learning to Read and Specific Reading Disabilities: Implications for Instruction.

To learn to read, the brain must repurpose neural systems for oral language and visual processing to mediate written language. We begin with a description of computational models for how alphabetic written language is processed. Next, we explain the roles of a dorsal sublexical system in the brain that relates print and speech, a ventral lexical system that develops the visual expertise for rapid orthographic processing at the word level, and the role of cognitive control networks that regulate attentional processes as children read. We then use studies of children, adult illiterates learning

Effects of Phonological Training on the Reading and Reading-Related Abilities of Hong Kong Children with Dyslexia.

This study aimed to investigate phonological awareness training by examining outcomes among Chinese children who learn Chinese without phonetic system training. Fifty-six Hong Kong children from the 3rd to 6th grades were recruited. Two-thirds of the children had been officially identified as dyslexic by the local government, and the remainder were considered high risk for dyslexia. The children were divided equally into a control group and an experimental group, with the groups matched as closely as possible by age and gender. Children in the experimental group were trained by onset-rime-leve

In search of the perfect phenotype: an analysis of linkage and association studies of reading and reading-related processes.

Reading ability and specific reading disability (SRD) are complex traits involving several cognitive processes and are shaped by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental forces. Linkage studies of these traits have identified several susceptibility loci. Association studies have gone further in detecting candidate genes that might underlie these signals. These results have been obtained in samples of mainly European ancestry, which vary in their languages, inclusion criteria, and phenotype assessments. Such phenotypic heterogeneity across samples makes understanding the relationship be

[Visually based reading disorders after brain damage. Standardised assessment and treatment with READ].

Visually based reading disorders are frequently encountered in patients with acquired brain damage. Homonymous visual field defects, impaired elementary visual capacities (acuity, contrast sensitivity, convergent fusion, ocular motor disorders), visual neglect or Balint-Holmes syndrome are the most frequent causes of such reading disorders. Reading is not only an important prerequisite for vocational and private life, but is also indispensable for subsequent cognitive abilities such as verbal working memory and long-term memory. Despite this importance no comprehensive system exists for the st

The use of music to enhance reading skills of second grade students and students with reading disabilities.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the efficacy of using music as a remedial strategy to enhance the reading skills of second-grade students and students who have been identified as having a specific learning disability (SLD) in reading. First, an intensive short-term music curriculum was designed to target reading comprehension and vocabulary skills at the second grade level. The curriculum was then implemented in classrooms at two public schools in the Southeast. Reading skills were evaluated pre and post curriculum intervention via the vocabulary and reading comprehension sub

Gene-Environment Interplay in Reading Performance.

Genetic factors are known to play a role in shaping reading abilities and their underlying cognitive processes. However, understanding how genetic and environmental factors interact to influence reading outcomes remains largely unknown. By evaluating the interplay between genetic and environmental influences on reading performance, this study aims to provide insights into the complex mechanisms underlying reading abilities. To this aim, we leveraged the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development dataset, considering socioeconomic indicators including household income and parental education, along
