A 35-years-old woman developed obstructed defecation due to a large (6 cm) non-emptying rectocele one year after successful electrostimulated gracilis neosphincter operation for correction of fecal incontinence after surgery for imperforate anus. Surgical correction of the rectocele was performed by a trans-vaginal approach due to the poor elasticity of the neoanus and avoidance of possible damage to the neosphincter. After physiological investigations, including defecography, the patient had a resection of the posterior vaginal mucosal wall, a double layer plication of the muscular wall with

PURPOSE: External rectal prolapse (ERP) is frequently associated with other pelvic disorders, such as enterocele, rectocele, and perineal descent. Evacuation proctography makes it possible to visualize the development of such anatomical abnormalities. The aim of this study was to identify the variables that would predict associated abnormalities in patients with ERP.
METHODS: Between February 2010 and August 2019, 124 female patients with ERP, who were evaluated using proctography were included in this study. Enterocele was diagnosed when the extension of the loop of the small bowel was locat

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The present study aimed to assess the changes in manometric parameters after transperineal repair (TPR) of rectocele and interpret failure of symptom improvement in light of these changes.
METHODS: This was an observational cohort study on patients with anterior rectocele who underwent TPR in the period of February 2016 to February 2019. Data collected included patients' demographics, rectocele size, Wexner constipation and incontinence scores, anal pressures, and rectal sensation before and 12 months after TPR. Analysis of data was done by paired t-test and chi-s

Rectal prolapse (RP) is often seen in patients over the age of fifty, particularly women. These patients frequently suffer from other concomitant pathologies like rectocele, sigmoidocele, cystocele, or even enterocele. Rectopexy with a mesh has been an established treatment for rectal prolapse. The utilization of the robotic system allows for a successful repair within a confined pelvic space, especially for precise suture placement when working with the mesh. A 77-year-old female presented with obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) symptoms found to be caused by a progressive rectal prolapse.

INTRODUCTION: A rectocele is a hernation of the rectum into the vaginal lumen developing as a consequence of weakness of the rectovaginal septum. It affects about 18% of women after childbearing age. Symptoms associated with a rectocele include constipation, vaginal fullness or heaviness, feeling of a bulging mass within vagina, incomplete stool evacuation and dyspareunia. Current methods of surgical treatment of a rectocele often require implantation of a mesh graft. In most of cases, synthetic and non-absorbable meshes are used. Although implantation of a synthetic and non-absorbable mesh is

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the safety and feasibility of stapled transanal procedures performed by a 36 mm stapling device, the so-called TST36 stapler. Methods: From September 2013 to June 2014 a prospective observational study was carried out by 8 proctology centers in Germany. The Cleveland Clinic Incontinence Score (CCIS) for incontinence and the Altomare ODS score were determined preoperatively. Follow-up examinations were performed after 14 days, one month and 6 months, at this time both scores were reevaluated. Results: 110 consecutive patients (71 women, 39 men)

INTRODUCTION: Rectocele is a common condition, which on imaging is defined by a pocket identified on Valsalva or defecation. Cut-offs of 10 and 20 mm for pocket depth have been described. This study analyses the correlation between rectocele depth and symptoms of bowel dysfunction to define a cut-off for the diagnosis of "significant rectocele" on ultrasound.
METHODS: A retrospective study using 564 archived data sets of patients seen at tertiary urogynaecological clinics. Patients underwent a standardised interview including a set of questions regarding bowel function, and translabial 3D/4D

This study reports the 2-year results of an original technique for rectocele repair by the vaginal route, using a combined sacrospinous suspension and a polypropylene mesh. Twenty-six women were successively operated between October 2000 and February 2003. Mean age was 63.7 years [range 35-92]. 19 women had had previous pelvic surgery for prolapse and/or urinary incontinence (73.1%), but none had had a previous rectocele repair. Patients underwent physical examination staging of prolapse in the international pelvic organ prolapse staging system. Eleven women had stage 2 posterior vaginal wall

PURPOSE: It is postulated that an anterior anal fissure can result from mucosal trauma occurring during distention of a rectocele and that repair of the rectocele by anterior levatorplasty can lead to healing of these anal fissures. This study was designed to compare anterior levatorplasty with internal sphincterotomy for the management of anterior anal fissures in females with a rectocele.
METHODS: From June 2000 until May 2002, 54 consecutive females with an anterior anal fissure and a rectocele were randomized to be managed by internal sphincterotomy or anterior levatorplasty. Preoperative

Surgical treatment of rectocele causing outlet blockage is still a subject of controversy. A retrospective study of eight rectocele repairs endorectally using a surgical stapling device done over a two years period was performed. The most common indication was constipation. All patients underwent in the preoperative period complete physiologic examination including defecography, anorectal manometry, electromyography and colonic transit studies. All patients underwent colonoscopy to exclude an obvious physical disorder. There was no postoperative morbidity and the mean hospital stay was four da

We developed a subject-specific 3-D finite element model to understand the mechanics underlying formation of female pelvic organ prolapse, specifically a rectocele and its interaction with a cystocele. The model was created from MRI 3-D geometry of a healthy 45 year-old multiparous woman. It included anterior and posterior vaginal walls, levator ani muscle, cardinal and uterosacral ligaments, anterior and posterior arcus tendineus fascia pelvis, arcus tendineus levator ani, perineal body, perineal membrane and anal sphincter. Material properties were mostly from the literature. Tissue impairme

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the operative repair of rectoceles in a defined group of women by a technique designed to deal with the cause (failure of the rectovaginal septum) rather than the effect (rectal and vaginal wall bulging).
STUDY DESIGN: Only women whose defecation was aided by vaginal digitation and who had large rectoceles on proctography were included. Any other clinical symptoms in the absence of vaginal digitation, even when proctography demonstrated a rectocele, were not taken as indicators for surgery in this study. There were nine women, median age 50 ye
