Synthesis of Cu2O micro/nanocrystals for catalytic combustion of high-concentration CO: The crucial role of glucose.

Cubic Cu2O micro/nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by liquid-phase reduction using copper salt of CuSO4 or CuCl2·2H2O, and glucose or ascorbic acid as reducing agent, respectively. The activity of the catalysts was evaluated by light-off curves of CO self-sustained catalytic combustion via temperature-programmed oxidation of CO (CO-TPO), with the results showing the activity of catalysts following the order of Cu2O-Cl-GLU > Cu2O-S-GLU > Cu2O-S-AA > Cu2O-Cl-AA, (Cl denotes CuCl2·2H2O, GLU denotes glucose, S denotes CuSO4 and AA denotes ascorbic acid, respectively), corresponding to the

Contact lenses that transform gold into nanoparticles for prophylaxis of light-related events and photothermal therapy.

This work describes for first time how anisotropic gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) can be spontaneously formed inside preformed contact lenses (CLs) avoiding the use of additional reductant agents (reagent-free) through a precise tunning of the monomeric composition, the saline concentration, and the application of steam heat sterilization. Protocols to generate AuNPs in solution using inorganic or small organic reductants are widely available. Differently, gold precursors interactions with polymer networks have been overlooked and, thus, the interest of chemically cross-linked hydrogels as organic

Unraveling the Valence State and Reactivity of Copper Centers in Membrane-Bound Particulate Methane Monooxygenase.

Particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) plays a critical role in catalyzing the conversion of methane to methanol, constituting the initial step in the C1 metabolic pathway within methanotrophic bacteria. However, the membrane-bound pMMO's structure and catalytic mechanism, notably the copper's valence state and genuine active site for methane oxidation, have remained elusive. Based on the recently characterized structure of membrane-bound pMMO, extensive computational studies were conducted to address these long-standing issues. A comprehensive analysis comparing the quantum mechanics/molecu

Simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal mechanism in a pyrite-involved mixotrophic biofilter.

Microbially mediated NO3--N and Cr(VI) reduction is being recognized as an eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation strategy. Iron sulfide mineral, as a natural inorganic electron donor, has a strong influence on NO3--N and Cr(VI) transformation, respectively. However, little is known about the simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal performance and underlying mechanism in an iron sulfide mineral-involved mixotrophic biofilter. This study demonstrated that the NO3--N and Cr(VI) removal efficiencies were stable at 62 ± 8% and 56 ± 10%, and most of them were eliminated in the 0-100-mm regio

Reduced Molecular Flavins as Single-Electron Reductants after Photoexcitation.

Flavoenzymes mediate a multitude of chemical reactions and are catalytically active both in different oxidation states and in covalent adducts with reagents. The transfer of such reactivity to the organic laboratory using simplified molecular flavins is highly desirable, and such applications in (photo)oxidation reactions are already established. However, molecular flavins have not been used for the reduction of organic substrates yet, although this activity is known and well-studied for DNA photolyase enzymes. We report a catalytic method using reduced molecular flavins as photoreductants and

Heterolytic O-O Bond Cleavage Upon Single Electron Transfer to a Nonheme Fe(III)-OOH Complex.

The one-electron reduction of the nonheme iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [FeIII (OOH)(L5 2 )]2+ (L5 2 =N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine), carried out at -70 °C results in the release of dioxygen and in the formation of [FeII (OH)(L5 2 )]+ following a bimolecular process. This reaction can be performed either with cobaltocene as chemical reductant, or electrochemically. These experimental observations are consistent with the disproportionation of the hydroperoxo group in the putative FeII (OOH) intermediate generated upon reduction of the FeIII (OOH) starting complex. Measurement of the NOx reduction effect on food wastewater during waste incineration.

Incineration is the most effective method for reducing the increasing waste volume. However, as the pollutants generated during incineration may cause secondary pollution, blocking them in advance is necessary. During incineration, prevention facilities are operated to reduce the amount of pollutants. Conventional selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) by injecting ammonia and urea as reducing agents. In this study, the NOx reduction effect on food wastewater (FW) was examined. In addition, the removal efficiency was compared at different concentrations of urea

Abiotic Reduction of Organic and Inorganic Compounds by Fe(II)-Associated Reductants: Comprehensive Data Sets and Machine Learning Modeling.

Iron-associated reductants play a crucial role in providing electrons for various reductive transformations. However, developing reliable predictive tools for estimating abiotic reduction rate constants (logk) in such systems has been impeded by the intricate nature of these systems. Our recent study developed a machine learning (ML) model based on 60 organic compounds toward one soluble Fe(II)-reductant. In this study, we built a comprehensive kinetic data set covering the reactivity of 117 organic and 10 inorganic compounds toward four major types of Fe(II)-associated reductants. Separate ML

The chemistry of hydropersulfides (RSSH) as related to possible physiological functions.

Hydropersulfides (RSSH) are oxidized thiol (RSH) derivatives that have been shown to be biologically prevalent with likely important functions (along with other polysulfur compounds). The functional utility of RSSH can be gleaned from their unique chemical properties. That is, RSSH possess chemical reactivity not present in other biologically relevant sulfur species that should allow them to be used in specific ways in biology as effector/signaling molecules. For example, compared to RSH, RSSH are considered to be superior nucleophiles, reductants and metal ligands. Moreover, unlike RSH, RSSH

Research landscape and hotspots of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NOx removal: insights from a comprehensive bibliometric analysis.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) has been one of the most efficient and widely used technologies to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx). SCR research has developed rapidly in recent years, which can be reflected by the dramatic increase of related academic publications. Herein, based on the 10,627 documents from 2001 to 2020 in Web of Science, the global research landscape and hotspots in SCR are investigated based on a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. The results show that SCR research has developed positively; the annul number of articles increase sharply from 246 in 2001 to 1092 in 2020. Pe

Role of Au-Sn bonding for stabilizing a gold nanocatalyst: a reinvestigation of purple of Cassius.

Purple of Cassius is a pigment based on a gold colloid that has been known for hundreds of years. It has had a profound influence on modern nanoscience. But the origin of the small size of the Au nanoparticles (NPs) and their superior stability remains ambiguous. The experiments and characterization studies discussed here confirmed that SnCl2 functioned not only as a reducing agent but also as an effective surface capping agent through bimetallic Au-Sn bonding. This finding expands the types of Au NP stabilizer from traditional organic examples (e.g., thiolate or phosphine) to metallic example

Using stannous ion as an excellent inorganic ECL coreactant for tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II).

It was found that stannous chloride (SnCl(2)), as a popular inorganic reducing reagent, could obviously enhance the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) in aqueous solution. Some factors affecting the ECL reactions between Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) and Sn(2+), including pH, concentrations of coreactant, and electrode materials, were investigated by comparison with a classic ECL coreactant tripropylamine (TPA). The Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)-Sn(2+) ECL coreactant system produces stronger and more stable ECL signals, can keep its excellent ECL activity over a wider pH r

Potential role of serotonin as a biological reductant associated with copper transportation.

Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter that is derived from tryptophan. Owing to a hydroxyl group attached to the indole nucleus, 5-HT exhibits a considerably higher redox activity than tryptophan. To gain insight into the biological relevance of the redox activity of 5-HT, the effect of Cu(I)-binding ligands on the 5-HT-mediated copper reduction was investigated. The d-d transition band of Cu(II) complexed with glycine [Cu(II)-Gly2] was not affected by addition of 5-HT alone but was diminished when a thioether-containing compound coexists with 5-HT. Concomitant with disappearance of the d-d t

Microwave-enhanced reduction of manganese from a low-grade pyrolusite ore using pyrite: process optimization and kinetic studies.

The inefficient leaching of manganese is the main factor hindering the commercialization of the reduction process during manganese recovery using pyrite as the reducing agent. Hence, a new method for improving recovery efficiency and reducing the cost is required. This study uses microwave heating as a strengthening method to extract Mn2+ from pyrolusite and the leaching conditions are optimized. It was found that the extraction rate of Mn2+ could reach 95.07% under microwave heating through the conditions of H2SO4 is 1.2 mol/L, m(pyrolusite)/m(pyrite) equals to 10:2, leaching temperature is 9

Reduction-ammoniacal leaching to recycle lithium, cobalt, and nickel from spent lithium-ion batteries with a hydrothermal method: Effect of reductants and ammonium salts.

Some inevitable issues of the acid leaching method used to recycle spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), such as toxic gas emission, excessive acid-base consumption, inferior metal selectivity and equipment corrosion, have gradually emerged and restricted the promotion and development of this method. It is therefore essential to develop a sustainable closed-loop recycling technology (reduction-ammoniacal method) for spent LIBs. In this study, the effects of various species of ammonia, ammonium salts and reductants on the leaching of Li, Co, Ni, Mn and Al from spent LIBs were investigated with a

Zn-Catalyzed Regioselective and Chemoselective Reduction of Aldehydes, Ketones and Imines.

An operationally convenient Zn-catalyzed synthesis of alcohols by the reduction of aldehydes, ketones, and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes/ketones is reported. It is a rare example of using mild and sustainable HBpin as a reductant for catalytic reduction of carbonyl compounds in the absence of acid or base as hydrolysis reagent. The reaction is upscalable and proceeds in high selectivity without the formation of boronate ester by-products, and tolerates sensitive functionalities, such as iodo, bromo, chloro, fluoro, nitro, trifluoromethyl, aminomethyl, alkynyl, and amide. The Zn(OAc)2/HBpin combina

The Copper Reduction Potential Determines the Reductive Cytotoxicity: Relevance to the Design of Metal-Organic Antitumor Drugs.

Copper-organic compounds have gained momentum as potent antitumor drug candidates largely due to their ability to generate an oxidative burst upon the transition of Cu2+ to Cu1+ triggered by the exogenous-reducing agents. We have reported the differential potencies of a series of Cu(II)-organic complexes that produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell death after incubation with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). To get insight into the structural prerequisites for optimization of the organic ligands, we herein investigated the electrochemical properties and the cytotoxicity of Cu(II) complexes with

Reductant- or Light-Driven ATP-Independent Reduction of CO2 by Nitrogenase MoFe Protein.

Nitrogenase is a versatile metalloenzyme that activates and reduces small molecules like N2, CO, and CO2 into value-added chemicals at ambient conditions. Previously, it is shown that the Mo-nitrogenase could reduce CO2 to CO, but not to hydrocarbons, in an ATP-dependent reaction. Here, it is reported that the ability of the catalytic component of Mo-nitrogenase (MoFe protein) enables ATP-independent reduction of CO2 to up to C4 hydrocarbons in room-temperature reactions driven by a chemical reductant (EuII-DTPA) or visible light (via CdS@ZnS (CZS) quantum dots). Moreover, an opposite deuteriu
