Sonographic evaluation of the vagus nerves: Protocol, reference values, and side-to-side differences.

INTRODUCTION: Reported sonographic reference values for the vagus nerves (VNs) vary greatly. We aimed to generate reference values in a large cohort and examine intrarater, interrater, and across-ultrasound systems agreement. METHODS: The VNs of 60 healthy subjects were examined by 2 sonographers and with 2 ultrasound systems. Cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of each VN were assessed at the level of the carotid sinus [proximal measurement level (ML)] and thyroid gland (distal ML). RESULTS: Mean VN CSA was significantly larger on the right side (proximal ML: 2.7 ± 0.6 mm2 vs. 2.1 ± 0.5 mm2 ; dist

Reference Values for Assessment of Unilateral Limb Lymphedema with Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry.

INTRODUCTION: The clinical assessment of unilateral limb lymphedema is commonly based on measurements of interlimb volume differences. Reference values for interlimb percentage differences of the volume, fat mass, and lean mass measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan are, however, not established. The aim of the study was to establish and categorize these reference values in normal limbs. METHODS AND RESULTS: DXA scans of the normal arms of 167 and normal legs of 196 melanoma patients (aged 18-75 years, body mass index <40), respectively, were performed. The interlimb percen

The extrapolated reference values procedure: Theory, algorithm, and results in patients and control subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Reference values (RVs) are required to separate normal from abnormal values obtained in electrodiagnostic (EDx) testing. However, it is frequently impractical to perform studies on control subjects to obtain RVs. The Extrapolated Reference Values (E-Ref) procedure extracts RVs from data obtained during clinically indicated EDx testing. We compared the E-Ref results with established RVs in several sets of EDx data. METHODS: The mathematical basis for E-Ref was explored to develop an algorithm for the E-Ref procedure. To test the validity of this algorithm, it was applied to simul

Reference Values for Umbilical Cord Blood Gases of Newborns Delivered by Elective Cesarean Section.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood gas values are better indicators of perinatal asphyxia than Apgar scores. Many studies have reported normal ranges of umbilical cord blood gases, which vary greatly due to many factors. This study aimed to establish the reference values of umbilical cord blood gases of normal cesarean newborns in a university hospital setting. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Blood samples from the umbilical artery and vein were collected from 160 newborns delivered by elective cesarean section. The indications for caesarean section were not due to fetal distress, intrauterine growth reta

Determination of reference values for tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion in healthy Turkish children.

OBJECTIVE: Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) is an echocardiographic measurement used for evaluating right ventricular systolic function. While established reference values of TAPSE exist for the adult population, only a limited number of studies have attempted to evaluate reference values for the pediatric population. The aim of the present study was to determine the reference values for TAPSE in healthy children in Turkey. METHODS: A total of 765 healthy children aged between 0 and 18 years, all of whom were referred to our clinic with cardiac murmurs, were evaluated prospe

Brazilian reference values for MPS II screening in dried blood spots--a fluorimetric assay.

OBJECTIVES: Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), or Hunter Syndrome, is a lysosomal storage disorder that is caused by the deficiency or absence of iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS) enzyme; in this disease, early diagnosis is essential to provide higher life expectancy for patients. This study validates a fluorimetric assay that is used to assess IDS enzyme activity using dried blood spot (DBS) samples and presents the reference interval for the Brazilian population. DESIGN AND METHODS: Venous blood sample was collected in heparin tubes for leukocyte extraction and DBS preparation. IDS activity in th

Quantitative neonatal glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase screening: distribution, reference values, and classification by phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: To determine enzyme assay reference values for newborns in a Sephardic Jewish population at high risk for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. STUDY DESIGN: Quantitative G6PD testing was performed on umbilical cord blood. The reduction of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-oxidase, reflecting G6PD activity, was measured spectrophotometrically. Hemoglobin (Hb) was measured on the same sample. G6PD activity was recorded as U/g Hb. RESULTS: Males (N = 1502) were separated into 2 distinct groups: those <7 U/g Hb (

Reference values for fetal penile length and width from 22 to 36 gestational weeks.

OBJECTIVE: Current reference range values for fetal penile growth are based on length measurements. However, methodologies for measuring penile length differ among studies and from the standard technique used in children. We propose that the measurement of penile width may aid in its evaluation. The aim of the study was to create normograms for penile length and width. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional design was used. One hundred male fetuses at 22 to 36 gestational weeks were included. On ultrasound examination, penile length was measured from tip to base, where the penis joins the scr

Age-specific reference values for cerebrospinal fluid protein concentration in neonates and young infants.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein values decline over the first few months of life as the infant's blood-CSF barrier matures. However, published studies differ in the reported rate, timing, and magnitude of this decline. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the age-related changes in CSF protein concentration and to determine accurate, age-specific reference values for neonates and young infants. DESIGN, SETTING AND PATIENTS: This cross-sectional study included infants age 56 days or younger who had a lumbar puncture performed in the emergency department of an urban tertiary care children's ho

Automatic analysis of heart rate variation: I. Method and reference values in healthy controls.

Many patients referred to an electrophysiological laboratory may have autonomic dysfunction. Some parasympathetic tests are based on the assessment of heart rate variation induced by breathing, Valsalva maneuver, and standing. We have developed fast and practical computer-based methods to analyze heart rate variation using standard EMG equipment and a personal computer. For quantitative description we have evaluated different algorithms, both earlier described and new ones. Findings in patients with diabetes have been compared with those obtained from healthy subjects in order to determine the

Impact of vitamin D-related serum PTH reference values on the diagnosis of mild primary hyperparathyroidism, using bivariate calcium/PTH reference regions.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND, OBJECTIVE: An international consensus conference underlined the importance of defining upper parathyroid hormone (PTH) reference values based on 25-OH-vitamin D [25(OH)D] to diagnose mild primary hyperparathyroidism. We determined the importance of this factor in a Belgian population. DESIGN, PATIENTS, METHODS: Intact PTH and 25(OH)D were measured in 261 healthy controls (18-65 years, winter/summer). They were classified as 25(OH)D replete (50-153 nmol/l; n = 129) or deplete (8-50 nmol/l; n = 132). PTH was determined in 49 patients with surgically proven primary hyperp

Age-Specific Biometric Ratios of the Posterior Fossa in Pediatric Neuroimaging: Establishing Normative Reference Values.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding normative biometric data of the posterior fossa is imperative to elucidate pathological alterations. Consequently, a reference for normative biometric data on posterior fossa structures in pediatric populations is essential for diagnosing cerebellar hypoplasia and other associated anomalies. However, a comprehensive set of objective, age-stratified biometric ratios for key posterior fossa structures is lacking, limiting diagnostic precision. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has evaluated the biometric data of the posterior fossa components in children. MA

Peripheral Nerve Cross-Sectional Area in Healthy Thai Children: Reference Values for Clinical Neuromuscular Ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonography of the nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) is increasingly used to support the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathies. However, normative CSA reference values in children, particularly in Southeast Asian populations, are limited. METHODS: Ultrasonographic nerve CSA measurements were conducted in 164 healthy Thai children aged 1 to 18 years at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thailand. Participants were classified into six age groups. CSA was measured in 10 peripheral nerves at 34 anatomical sites and bilateral cervical roots (C5-C7), and the median CSAs were calc
