Racial disparities in uncorrected and undercorrected refractive error in the United States.

PURPOSE: To identify risk factors for inadequately corrected refractive error in the United States. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 12,758 participants 12 years of age and older from the 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The primary outcome was the proportion of individuals with inadequate refractive correction for whom refractive correction would result in a visual acuity of 20/40 or better. The primary predictor was race/ethnicity. Secondary predictors included age, sex, annual household income, education, insurance, type of refractive error, curren

Effect of simulated astigmatic refractive error on reading performance in the young.

PURPOSE: Few studies have specifically investigated the functional effects of uncorrected astigmatism on measures of reading fluency. This information is important to provide evidence for the development of clinical guidelines for the correction of astigmatism. METHODS: Participants included 30 visually normal, young adults (mean age, 21.7 ± 3.4 years). Distance and near visual acuity and reading fluency were assessed with optimal spectacle correction (baseline) and for two levels of astigmatism, 1.00 diopter cylinder (DC) and 2.00 DC, at two axes (90 and 180°) to induce both against-the-rule

The GEnes in Myopia (GEM) study in understanding the aetiology of refractive errors.

Refractive errors represent the leading cause of correctable vision impairment and blindness in the world with an estimated 2 billion people affected. Refractive error refers to a group of refractive conditions including hypermetropia, myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia but relatively little is known about their aetiology. In order to explore the potential role of genetic determinants in refractive error the "GEnes in Myopia (GEM) study" was established in 2004. The findings that have resulted from this study have not only provided greater insight into the role of genes and other factors invol

Uncorrected refractive error in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: The 2004 tsunami focused unprecedented international aid and resources on Sri Lanka. Among other responses, a program delivered by volunteer optometrists enabled many local people to access eye examinations and spectacles for the first time. The data collected from the eye-care delivery program during 2005 are summarised in this report, as an evidence base for planning future eye-care interventions in these provinces or similar areas. METHODS: A total of 96 eye clinics were conducted by visiting volunteer optometrists in the northern and eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, at which 20

A survey on refractive error and strabismus among children in a school at Aligarh.

An ophthalmic survey of 310 school going children in the age group of 4-12 years was done. 41 children (13.2%) were found to have a vision of less than 6/6 in one or both eyes. Myopia of 0.5 D or more and hyperopia of +2 D or more or astigmatism of 1 D or more in one or both eyes were seen in 74 children (22.9%). There was a tendency for a decrease in hyperopia and an increase in myopia with advancing age. Astigmatic error of 1 D or less was seen in 12 eyes (1.93%) and anisometropia of more than 1 D was present in 11 cases (3.5%). Hypertropia was more in female children whereas myopia had a ne

Recurrent and persistent refractive errors after restarting isotretinoin treatment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Isotretinoin is a vitamin A derivative widely used for moderate-to-severe acne, and is known to cause multiple systemic and ocular adverse events. Refractive errors, such as myopia and astigmatism, are commonly considered reversible after discontinuation of isotretinoin treatment. However, the visual changes and subsequent prognosis after re-exposure to isotretinoin are rarely reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male initiated oral isotretinoin at 10 mg twice daily for acne vulgaris. Twelve days later, the patient developed acute visual deterioration. The eye examination re
