Trauma-Related Psychopathology in Iraqi Refugee Youth Resettled in the United States, and Comparison With an Ethnically Similar Refugee Sample: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Conflict in Iraq has displaced millions of refugee youth. Warzone exposure and forced migration have unique acute and chronic impacts on youth, yet effects of exposure may not be universal across diverse refugee groups. Understanding how youth from various refugee groups are differentially affected by stress and trauma is critical to allocate resources and implement screening measures with the goal of providing early intervention. METHOD: To identify the effects of warzone exposure and forced migration, a convenience sample of 48 Iraqi refugee youth ages 6-17 was assessed within t

Barriers to optimal chronic pain management in refugees: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, there were 36.4 million refugees worldwide, many of whom experience physical injuries, human rights abuses and psychological distress during displacement. However, their healthcare needs during and after resettlement are rarely met. Among them, chronic pain and its effective management, are under-recognized but prevalent problems of humanitarian care. The aim of this scoping review was to improve our understanding of the challenges in treating and managing chronic pain in refugee populations. Specifically, this scoping review aims to address the following objectives: (i) t

The Cascade of Care for Infectious Diseases in Newly Arrived Refugees.

(1) Background: Post-arrival screening for infectious diseases is routinely offered to newly arrived refugees in Denmark, including tests for hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and syphilis. This study aimed to examine the cascade of care following positive screening results in a local cohort of refugees in Denmark, with a focus on subsequent clinical management, follow-up, and outcomes. (2) Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 1506 newly arrived refugees of all ages and countries of origin. All were offered a post-arrival infecti

Deployment of COVID-19 Vaccines for Refugees and Migrants in Nepal.

Background The needs and determinants of COVID-19 vaccination uptake and coverage among refugees, migrants in regular situations (MIRS), and migrants in irregular situations (MIIS) remain undocumented. This hinders advocacy toward inclusive vaccination policies and ultimately undermines effective vaccine rollout. Objective To estimate vaccination coverage and produce evidence on the barriers and facilitators to COVID-19 vaccination for refugees and migrants in Nepal. Method Mixed-method study was conducted in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces of Nepal. In total, 210 household surveys were c

Perspectives on tuberculosis in migrants, refugees, and displaced populations in Europe.

Finding and treating all forms of tuberculosis (TB) (latent, drug-susceptible, drug-resistant, multidrug-resistant, and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis) among migrants, displaced populations, and refugees are important challenges facing TB control programs in Europe. Many of these populations live in poor conditions, with limited access to healthcare and TB services. Ever-increasing armed conflicts in Europe and other parts of the world continue to exacerbate rates of migration to and within Europe, with considerable implications for health services. TB in Europe is more prevalent in m

Refugees' integration and emotional distress over the course of 9 months.

BACKGROUND: High prevalence rates of mental disorders are reported in refugees due to experiencing substantial pre-, peri-, and post-migration stress. While long-term studies indicated that emotional distress of refugees either stagnates or ameliorates over time, long-term research on refugees' integration and its' interaction with emotional distress is limited. The examined long-term predictors for refugees' emotional distress and integration in this study were, amongst others, severe physical abuse in childhood, residence status and length of stay. METHODS: The sample included 46 refugees,

METHODS: This follow-up study used data from the Danish Database on Refugees with Trauma. Participants were recruited from 2009 to 2015 at a specialized psychiatric clinic. Narcotic offences and drug use disorders among young refugees in Norway.

AIMS: We examined the patterns of healthcare utilisation for drug use disorders (DUDs) and charges related to narcotics among young refugees in Norway considering the role of sex, country of origin and condition of arrival (accompanied versus unaccompanied minors). METHODS: Based on national registers, sex-stratified Cox regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios to assess the risk of being charged with a narcotics offence and the use of healthcare services related to DUDs. The sample consisted of 15,068 young refugees and 573,241 young Norwegians born in Norway to two Norwegian-bo

Sex differences in trauma exposure and symptomatology in trauma-affected refugees.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine associations between sex, exposure to potentially traumatic events and pre-treatment symptomatology in trauma-affected refugees. We analyzed pre-treatment self-report questionnaires and clinical interviews from 318 refugees with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a specialized mental health clinic. Results show that twice as many females reported exposure to family violence (p = .001) and sexual abuse (p = .004), whereas men were at least three times as likely to report exposure to torture (p <0.001), imprisonment (p < .001), and comba

Experiences of Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment for the North Korean Refugees.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is increasing in immigrants. We aimed to investigate the current status of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment for North Korean Refugees (NKR) compared to South Koreans Contacts (SKC). METHODS: TB close contacts in a closed facility of SKC and NKR who underwent LTBI screening in a settlement support center for NKR were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Among tuberculin skin test (TST) ≥10 mm (n=298) reactors, the males accounted for 72.2% in SKC (n=126) and 19.5% in NKR (n=172) (p<0.01). The mean age was higher in South Korea (42.8±9.9 years vs. 35.4

Risk of Psychosis Among Refugees: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: This systematic review and meta-analysis is, to date, the first and most comprehensive to focus on the incidence of nonaffective psychoses among refugees. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relative risk (RR) of incidence of nonaffective psychosis in refugees compared with the RR in the native population and nonrefugee migrants. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, PsycINFO, and Embase databases were searched for studies from January 1, 1977, to March 8, 2018, with no language restrictions (PROSPERO registration No. CRD42018106740). Long-term mental health of war-refugees: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: There are several million war-refugees worldwide, majority of whom stay in the recipient countries for years. However, little is known about their long-term mental health. This review aimed to assess prevalence of mental disorders and to identify their correlates among long-settled war-refugees. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies that assessed current prevalence and/or factors associated with depression and anxiety disorders in adult war-refugees 5 years or longer after displacement. We searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and PILOTS from their inception t

Khyâl attacks: a key idiom of distress among traumatized cambodia refugees.

Traumatized Cambodian refugees with PTSD often complain of khyâl attacks. The current study investigates khyâl attacks from multiple perspectives and examines the validity of a model of how khyâl attacks are generated. The study found that khyâl attacks had commonly been experienced in the previous 4 weeks and that their severity was strongly correlated with the severity of PTSD (PTSD Checklist). It was found that khyâl attacks were triggered by various processes--such as worry, trauma recall, standing up, going to a mall--and that khyâl attacks almost always met panic attack criteria. It was
