PURPOSE: Patients with cancer often experience declines in quality of life (QoL), functional capacity, psychosocial health, and body composition, alongside cancer-related fatigue. Aerobic and resistance exercise interventions have shown potential in mitigating these effects. This review evaluated the impact of such interventions on QoL, fatigue, body composition, functional capacity, and psychosocial health across both the commonly studied cancers such as breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal, as well as the less-studied types, including lymphoma, ovarian, multiple myeloma and head and neck c

INTRODUCTION: External snapping hip is a condition characterized by a painful, audible, or palpable snap during hip movement, often accompanied by physical impairments. Progressive resistance training (PRT) has shown feasibility and acceptability in this population, but its clinical and cost-effectiveness has not been evaluated in a randomized controlled trial. This protocol outlines the Snappy Hip trial, which will evaluate the effect of PRT versus no intervention on pain at 12 weeks and compare pain when PRT is initiated immediately versus after a 12-week delay.
METHODS: The Snappy Hip Tria

PURPOSE: Skeletal muscles have notable features that enable muscle hypertrophy in response to resistance training (RET). Most animal studies on ladder climbing have focused on the lower limb muscles; however, the movement also involves the upper limb muscles. Moreover, little evidence exists regarding whether RET affects food intake. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate RET-induced muscle hypertrophy in both the upper and lower limb muscles and to examine changes in food intake.
METHODS: Twenty male Wistar Hannover rats (6 weeks old) were randomly assigned to sedentary control (SED, n =

(1) Background: The range of loads is defined as the difference between the highest and the lowest relative load (i.e., %1RM) used throughout a resistance training program. However, the optimal range of loads has not been studied yet. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of different ranges of load (from 50 to 85% 1RM (R50-85), from 55 to 75% 1RM (R55-75), and from 60 to 70% 1RM (R60-70) on physical performance using velocity-based resistance training (VBT). (2) Methods: Thirty-eight men (mean ± standard deviation; age: 23.3 ± 3.6 years, body mass: 76.5 ± 8.3 kg, and height:

This study aimed to examine whether second-generation oral contraceptive (OC) users exhibit greater muscle hypertrophy following resistance training compared to non-users across various targeted muscle groups. Fourteen young, untrained women using OCs (aged 28 ± 4 years) and 12 eumenorrheic non-users (NOC, aged 30 ± 4 years) underwent a 12-week resistance training programme. The thickness of seven muscles in the upper- and lower-limbs was measured using ultrasound, while body composition was assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the maximal torque of all relevant joints was teste

Urinary stress incontinence has a high prevalence in women, with many associated risk factors, such as high impact and intensity sports due to increased intra-abdominal pressure causing stretching and weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. No previous study has investigated the effects of undulatory resistance training (URT), deemed as high impact sports's modality, on urinary bladder (UB) and tissue remodeling. Healing of tissue depends on the equilibrium of metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPS). We aimed to investigate the histomorphological effects of URT on UB wall. Twelve

BACKGROUND: A possible chronic effect of exercise training is the attenuation of the acute decrease in blood pressure (BP) observed after the execution of a session of exercise [i.e. called postexercise hypotension (PEH)]. However, there are few empirical data regarding this issue, and the possible mechanisms involved in this blunted response have not been studied.
AIM: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of dynamic resistance training (DRT) on PEH and its systemic, vascular, and autonomic mechanisms.
METHODS: Data from 16 middle-aged treated hypertensive men who underwent DRT (eight exe

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of combining inspiratory muscle resistance with strength training on lung function and aerobic capacity in artistic swimmers.
METHODS: This research constitutes a placebo-controlled randomized trial, involving a five-week walking program conducted twice a week. Fourteen female artistic swimmers were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (TG group, n = 7) or the control group (CG group, n = 7). Both groups underwent the same strength training program. The TG group performed inspiratory muscle strengthening at 50% of maximum in

BACKGROUND: Stroke impacts nearly 14 million people annually. Muscle strength and physical function are often affected by stroke and important determinants of stroke recovery. Resistance exercise training (RT) has been shown to improve muscle strength, but RT prescriptions may be suboptimal for other aspects of stroke recovery. Parameters such as frequency, intensity, type, and duration may influence the effectiveness of RT interventions but have not been systematically evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: 1) To determine the effects of RT on stroke recovery, and 2) to examine the influence of RT parameter

Stroke, a neurological disorder, leads to long-term disability thereby greatly affecting gait and mobility. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of progressive resistance training in both acute and chronic stroke patients. A quasi interventional study was designed and 46 stroke patients were recruited through convenience sampling technique. Sample size was calculated using epi-tool. Patients who had cognitive problems, balance impairments and contractures were excluded from the study. The study was conducted from January to June 2018, at Rafsan Rehab & Research Centr

Lingual resistance training has been proposed as an intervention to improve decreased tongue pressure strength and endurance in patients with dysphagia. However, little is known about the impact of lingual resistance training on swallow physiology. This systematic review scrutinizes the available evidence regarding the effects of lingual resistance training on swallowing function in studies using Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS) with adults. Seven articles met the inclusion criteria and underwent detailed review for study quality, data extraction, and planned meta-analysis. Included

Mutation to the dystrophin gene causes skeletal muscle weakness in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) or Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD). Deliberation continues regarding implications of prescribing exercise for these patients. The purpose of this study was to determine whether isometric resistance exercise (~10 tetanic contractions/session) improves skeletal muscle strength and histopathology in the mdx mouse model of DMD. Three isometric training sessions increased in vivo isometric torque (22%) and contractility rates (54%) of anterior crural muscles of mdx mice. Mice expressin

This study investigated the hypertrophic potential of load-matched blood-flow restricted resistance training (BFR) vs free-flow traditional resistance training (low-load TRT) performed to fatigue. Ten healthy young subjects performed unilateral BFR and contralateral low-load TRT elbow flexor dumbbell curl with 40% of one repetition maximum until volitional concentric failure 3 days per week for 6 weeks. Prior to and at 3 (post-3) and 10 (post-10) days post-training, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to estimate elbow flexor muscle volume and muscle water content accumulation through tr
