Morphological study of the brainstem in Fukuyama type congenital muscular dystrophy.

We have observed sudden clinical death due to Fukuyama-type congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD). In FCMD, brain abnormalities, such as polymicrogyria, leptomeningeal neuroglial heterotopia and abnormal course of the corticospinal tracts, are well known. We investigated the brainstem of 10 FCMD and 7 control cases. Among the control cases, 5 with Duchenne type muscular dystrophy died of heart failure and 2 died accidental death. In the brainstem, the catecholaminergic neurons characterized by reaction with antiserum to tyrosin hydroxylase showed notable reduction in the reticular formation, va

A spinal origin for the obligate flexor synergy in the non-human primate: Implications for control of reaching.

Stroke survivors frequently develop the flexor synergy, an obligate co-contraction of shoulder abductors and elbow flexors; the neural substrate has proven elusive. Here we trained healthy monkeys to generate isometric elbow and shoulder torques to move an on-screen cursor, and recorded neuron firing from motor cortical areas and the reticular formation. In all regions we found cells correlated with activity around a single joint. Neurons coding co-contractions showed a bias towards combinations orthogonal to the post-stroke flexor synergy, e.g. shoulder abduction with elbow extension. Thresho

[Multiple sclerosis with consciousness disturbance: a case report].

We report here a nine-year-old girl with multiple sclerosis having consciousness disturbance at admission. Neurological examination revealed drowsiness, unstable emotion, decreased visual acuity, disturbance of convergence, and clumsy coordination movements. Her cerebrospinal fluid IgG and myelin basic protein were increased. Electroencephalogram showed intermittent, high voltage slow waves predominant in the frontal lobes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) found multiple demyelinating plaques in the brainstem, thalamus, periventricular white matter. The brainstem reticular formation was involv

Effects of the antiparkinson drug budipine on EEG activity in unrestrained rats.

Rats were stereotactically implanted with electrodes into four brain areas (frontal cortex, hippocampus, striatum, and reticular formation) to allow registration of intracerebral field potentials. Connection of the electrodes to a microplug fixed to the skull of the animals allowed wireless transmission of the signals using a four-channel telemetric device. The potentials were subjected to a frequency analysis in real time, the power spectra obtained were segmented according to previous experience. Even in the low-dose range, budipine affected the power within these frequency bands: at 2 mg/kg

Origin of monoaminergic innervation of the nucleus raphe magnus--a combined monoamine histochemistry and fluorescent retrograde tracing study in the rat.

By the use of the fluorescent retrograde tracer, Fast Blue (FB), in combination with monoamine fluorescence histochemistry, the origin of monoaminergic input to the region of the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) was investigated in the rat. After microinjection of FB into the NRM, a great number of FB-labeled NA-containing cells were found in the region of the nucleus reticularis lateralis (corresponding to A1 NA areas), the reticular formation just dorsolateral to the nucleus olivaris inferior (corresponding to the A3 NA area), the ventral part of the locus coeruleus (A6 NA area), and the lateral p

[The effect of chronic alcoholic intoxication on the bioelectrical activity of the human brain].

Results from examinations of 110 spirit-abused men are presented. Changes in the EEG are found indicating the formation of an excitation focus that affect the reticular formation and induces an increase of the ascending activating effects on the cortex. Degree of these changes correlates with heaviness of the alcoholic disease. Results from the research permit a conclusion on diagnostic valuableness of the EEG examination with an aminazine test in case of alcoholism.

Spinal neurons reaching the lateral reticular nucleus as studied in the rat by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

An anatomical technique based on the retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to investigate the projections of spinal cord neurons to the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN). Labeled cells were found at all spinal levels and in particular large numbers in cervical and lumbar segments. Various spinal areas gave rise to cells of origin of this tract, which appears to be more prominent than any other tract previously studied with a similar approach. Labeling common to all spinal segments was observed in (1) ventromedial parts of both intermediate zone and ventral horn (laminae V

The function of bone marrow in the incorporation of a bone graft.

Transplants of bone marrow into the anterior chamber of the eye were observed by Pfeiffer to produce migration, regression, and degeneration of myelogenous and hematopoietic cells at the same time that reticular cells proliferate and differentiate into bone. This key observation raised the question of whether the bone formation is the result of proliferation and osteogenetic activity of the reticular cells, or whether mesenchymal-type cells of the host are also induced by the transplant to differentiate into bone. From a comparison of bone marrow with epiphyseal cartilage, fracture callus, can

[Lymphogranulomatosis of the thymus gland ("granulomatous thymoma")].

Thirteen tumors of questionable genesis located in the thymus were studied. The microscopical structure of these tumors was identical to lymphogranulomatosis of other localization. Reactive proliferation of the thymic epithelium and cyst formation are characteristic of lymphogranulomatosis primarily developing in the thymus. The disease was not "granulomatous thymoma" since giant multinuclear cells by their structural characteristics corresponded to reticular elemens and the epithelial component was absent in extrathoracal formations.

[Electroencephalographic changes during experimental plateau waves].

The present study was designed to induce plateau waves by electrical stimulation of the brain stem and examine the changes in EEG during the plateau waves. Experiments were carried out on 10 adult mongrel dogs which were slightly anesthetized, immobilized and artificially respired. Electroencephalogram (EEG), intracranial pressure (ICP), systemic blood pressure (SBP) and cerebral perfusion pressure were simultaneously recorded on the electromagnetic tape after transorbital puncture of the intracavernous internal carotid artery. Teaching Video NeuroImage: Isolated Undulating Tongue Hyperkinesia Following a Basilar Stroke.

An 82-year-old man with a history of hypertension and coronary revascularization presented with sudden-onset right hemiparesis and disorientation lasting 5 hours. On admission, he was intubated because of gasping and a Glasgow Coma Scale of 3. Hemorrhagic stroke was suspected, but ruled out by the initial head CT, which revealed old cerebellar lacunae. The following day, the comatose, now unsedated patient exhibited tetraparesis; fixed, nonreactive pupils; and corneal reflex, but no oculocephalic reflex. Rhythmic undulating tongue movements without palatal or limb involvement were first observ

Chemotropic guidance facilitates axonal regeneration and synapse formation after spinal cord injury.

A principal objective of spinal cord injury (SCI) research is the restoration of axonal connectivity to denervated targets. We tested the hypothesis that chemotropic mechanisms would guide regenerating spinal cord axons to appropriate brainstem targets. We subjected rats to cervical level 1 (C1) lesions and combinatorial treatments to elicit axonal bridging into and beyond lesion sites. Lentiviral vectors expressing neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) were then injected into an appropriate brainstem target, the nucleus gracilis, and an inappropriate target, the reticular formation. NT-3 expression in the co

Prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) promotes awakening and suppresses absence seizures.

Prolactin releasing peptide (PrRP) is a recently identified neuropeptide that stimulates prolactin release from pituitary cells. The presence of its receptor outside the hypothalamic-pituitary axis suggests that it may have other functions. We present here evidence that PrRP can modulate the activity of the reticular thalamic nucleus, a brain region with prominent PrRP receptor expression that is critical for sleep regulation and the formation of non-convulsive absence seizures. Intracerebroventricular injection of PrRP (1-10 nmol) into sleeping animals significantly suppresses sleep oscillati

Morphometric analysis of reticular and elastin fibers in the cerebral arteries of patients with intracranial aneurysms.

Elastin and reticular fibers were identified using standard histological strains in middle cerebral arteries taken from patients who had died from aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and control patients who did not have cerebral aneurysms. Examination of cerebral arteries from normal individuals revealed a dense network of fine reticular fibers in the arterial media that were uniformly distributed. Computerized morphometric analysis indicated that reticular fibers in the arterial media of cerebral arteries were significantly decreased in patients with aneurysms. In addition, these fibers were

[Central post-stroke pain in Wallenberg syndrome].

We analyzed clinical characteristics of central post-stroke pain (CPSP), constant and burning pain, in 32 patients with Wallenberg syndrome due to infarction. CPSP developed in 44% (14/32) of the patients; 8 in acute stage (within 4 days after the stroke) and 8 in chronic stage(10-120 days after the stroke). Apart from one exceptional case, CPSP was present in the hypalgesic side of face and extremities. In 9 cases of typical type (Currier's distribution of sensory disturbance), CPSP occurred in the ipsilateral face to the lesion during acute stage. Among them, 2 cases developed severe lancina

A trigeminoreticular pathway: implications in pain.

Neurons in the caudalmost ventrolateral medulla (cmVLM) respond to noxious stimulation. We previously have shown most efferent projections from this locus project to areas implicated either in the processing or modulation of pain. Here we show the cmVLM of the rat receives projections from superficial laminae of the medullary dorsal horn (MDH) and has neurons activated with capsaicin injections into the temporalis muscle. Injections of either biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the MDH or fluorogold (FG)/fluorescent microbeads into the cmVLM showed projections from lamina I and II of the MDH

The dorsal cochlear nucleus as a participant in the auditory, attentional and emotional components of tinnitus.

The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) has been modeled in numerous studies as a possible source of tinnitus-generating signals. This hypothesis was originally developed on the basis of evidence that the DCN becomes hyperactive following exposure to intense noise. Since these early observations, evidence that the DCN is an important contributor to tinnitus has grown considerably. In this paper, the available evidence to date will be summarized. In addition, the DCN hypothesis of tinnitus can now be expanded to include possible involvement in other, non-auditory components of tinnitus. It will be sh

Treatment of Parkinson's disease with magnetic fields reduces the requirement for antiparkinsonian medications.

Recently, I reported that extracranial treatment with picoTesla range magnetic fields (MF) is an effective, safe, and revolutionary modality in the management of Parkinsonism including those patients manifesting levodopa-induced motor complications. This treatment, which has emerged as a potentially more advantageous modality than pharmacologic therapy, also produces improvements in nonmotor aspects of the disease including mood, cognitive functions, sleep, pain, appetite, autonomic functions, and sexual behavior, which are usually minimally, if at all, ameliorated by long term therapy with le
