[Lectin histochemical studies of retinal pigment epithelium in retinal detachment].

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) exhibits a broad spectrum of morphological changes under pathological conditions. Since RPE cells cannot be immunocytochemically characterized with certainty, lectin histochemical investigations were performed to study the lectin binding pattern of different morphological RPE variants in human globes. Normal RPE with attached retinas was compared to reactive changes in RPE following retinal detachment. Lectin binding sites were visualized by a modified PAP technique performed on paraffin-embedded tissue sections. Eight lectins of different sugar affinity (C

Bilateral choroidal detachment with exudative retinal detachment in a patient with septicaemia.

We present a case of bilateral choroidal and exudative retinal detachment with hypotony in a patient with septicaemia. Our patient after initial hospitalisation was treated by the local ophthalmologist as a case of sterile pan uveitis with systemic and topical steroids that did not have any effect. Our patient responded well to timely surgical intervention of choroidal drainage and vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade followed by steroids and antibiotics. Cataract progression in both eyes occurred due to hypotony, inflammation, use of steroids and the vitreous surgery. It was successfully ma

Acute retinal necrosis: an assessment of vitreous and retinal detachment.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between posterior vitreous changes and retinal detachment (RD) associated with acute retinal necrosis (ARN). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, consecutive case study. METHODS: This study evaluated the clinical findings for 32 eyes of 29 patients (12 women, 17 men) diagnosed with ARN, with the posterior vitreous condition monitored by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The causative virus, incidence of RD, and relationship between the development of RD and final visual acuity were investigated. Patients were checked for posterior vitreous detac

Acute retinal necrosis presenting exudative retinal detachment: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is a severe, rapidly progressive viral retinitis that is commonly complicated by rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in its late stage. However, the presentation of ARN with exudative retinal detachment (ERD) in the early phase is exceptionally rare, particularly when caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV) in an adult patient. This report highlights this atypical presentation, which initially occurred without definite evidence of retinal necrosis, posing a diagnostic challenge. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old woman presented with acute blurred vision, e

Acute retinal necrosis with exudative retinal detachment in a child.

Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is a rare ocular emergency caused mainly by viral entities. ARN may be caused by Herpes zoster virus (HZV) and Herpes simplex virus (HSV), both HSV-1 and HSV-2. ARN mostly present in 20-60 years old immunocompetent adults. A 7-year-old girl presented to the eye clinic with complaints of left eye redness noted by her mother for 2-3 days. On examination with indirect ophthalmoscopy, no hypopyon was seen in either eye. In the left eye fundus view was hazy. Ultrasound B-scan performed showed exudative retinal detachment. PCR of ocular fluid was positive for HSV-1 DNA.

Bilateral patching in retinal detachment: fluid mechanics and retinal "settling".

PURPOSE: When a patient suffers a retinal detachment and surgery is delayed, it is known clinically that bilaterally patching the patient may allow the retina to partially reattach or "settle." Although this procedure has been performed since the 1860s, there is still debate as to how such a maneuver facilitates the reattachment of the retina. METHODS: Finite element calculations using commercially available analysis software are used to elucidate the influence of reduction in eye movement caused by bilateral patching on the flow of subretinal fluid in a physical model of retinal detachment.

Massive retinal gliosis: a late complication of retinal detachment surgery.

PURPOSE: Massive retinal gliosis is a rare, benign, intraocular tumor. It develops mostly in long-standing ocular disease such as chronic inflammation, vascular disorders, glaucoma, trauma, or congenital abnormalities. We report on a case of massive retinal gliosis, which developed 17 years following retinal detachment surgery. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 64-year-old woman developed a peripheral fundus tumor 17 years after successful retinal detachment surgery. Follow-up examination demonstrated growth of the mass. The tumor was treated by pars plana vitrectomy and local endoresection.

Unilateral atypical retinal pigment epitheliopathy associated with serous retinal detachment.

We treated a young patient with unilateral gray-yellow subretinal lesions associated with bullous retinal detachment in the posterior pole. Angiography revealed the presence of multiple areas of subretinal pigment epithelial pooling of the dye. It is rare to find an association between acute inflammation of the retinal pigment epithelium and sensory retinal detachment.

Management of viral retinitis-associated retinal detachment in AIDS.

We retrospectively reviewed the results of surgery in 27 cases of retinal detachment related to viral necrotising retinitis in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade were performed in all cases. Scleral buckling was applied to 9 eyes. Silicone oil was left in the eye in all cases. Mean follow-up period was 13 weeks. Post-operative flattening of the retina at the posterior pole was achieved in 89% of the eyes. Anatomical results were not related to the intraoperative use of an encircling procedure. Visual acuity improved by 2 Snellen lines or more in 4

[A study on treatment of retinal detachment with unseen retinal breaks].

64 cases (66 eyes) of retinal detachment in which no breaks can be found were treated with pars plana vitrectomy, scleral buckling or encircling procedures. The selection of operation depended on the shape and size of retinal detachment, the position of peripheral retinal lattice degeneration, phakia or aphakia, traumatic situation and the appearance of proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The results showed that the detached retina was successfully reattached in 53 eyes (80.3%), 4 eyes were improved (6%), only 9 eyes failed (16.7%). The technic of operation and application are discussed. We consi

THE RISK OF RETINAL BREAKS OR DETACHMENT IN FELLOW EYE WITH LATTICE DEGENERATION AFTER PRIMARY RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT.

PURPOSE: Lattice poses risks to patients with prior detachments. This study evaluates such patients' likelihood of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) and retinal breaks (RB) and assesses the efficacy of prophylactic laser retinopexy and cryopexy. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX registry. Patients either with or without prior contralateral RRD/RB and also with fellow eye lattice were included. Logistic regression calculated the likelihood of RRD/RB in the fellow eye. The number needed to treat (NNT) was calculated for prophylactic laser retinopexy and cryopexy. RES

Massive choroidal detachment masking overlying primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: a case series.

Choroidal detachment (CD) along with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) as a presenting finding is a well-recognised association. The pathogenesis appears to revolve around the hypotony induced by the primary RRD and an unstable choroidal vascular system. We present 3 patients with massive CD with minimal or no overlying RRD, initially misdiagnosed as a CD due to other causes. Since the correct diagnosis may be delayed, such cases form a real challenge in differential diagnosis and management. The underlying cycle where the retinal defect of a primary RRD is buckled by a CD, follo

Rhematogenous retinal detachment complicated by severe intraocular inflammation, hypotony, and choroidal detachment.

An unusual type of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is described and compared with a control group of patients with detached retina. Features of the condition, in addition to retinal detachment, include severe anterior and posterior uveitis, choroidal detachment, hypotony, deepened anterior chamber, posterior synechiae, iridophakodonesis, and a poor surgical and visual prognosis due to massive periretinal proliferation. The disease occurs in a disproportionately high ratio in blacks. These cases may be mistaken for uveitis, Harada's syndrome, the uveal effusion syndrome, dislocated lens, or m

Exudative Retinal Detachment in Preeclampsia. Case Reports.

Preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome are serious pregnancy-related complications associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These pathological conditions are related to placental dysfunction, systemic endothelial dysfunction and various clinical and biochemical abnormalities. Exudative retinal detachment as a rare but clinically significant ophthalmologic complication of preeclampsia occurs in 0.2-2% of cases, more frequently affecting primigravidas and often presenting bilaterally. This article presents two case reports of patients with preeclampsia complicated by exudative re
