Assessment of the impact of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol on retinal vessels using optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is acknowledged as an independent risk factor (IRF) for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, studies on the impact of LDL-C on microvasculature are still scarce. The retina, abundant in microvasculature, can now be examined for microvascular alterations through the novel, non-invasive, and quantitative optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) technique. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 243 patients from the geriatric department were recruited (between December 2022 and December 2023). Individuals were class

Prevalence of and factors associated with dilated choroidal vessels beneath the retinal pigment epithelium among the Japanese.

Pachyvessels are pathologically dilated large choroidal vessels and are associated with the pathogenesis of several pachychoroid-related disorders, including central serous chorioretinopathy. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for pachyvessels in the Japanese population. We included 316 participants (aged ≥ 40 years) with normal right eyes. The presence of pachyvessels (vertical diameter > 300 µm, distance to the retinal pigment epithelium < 50 µm) was determined using 6 × 6 mm macular swept-source optical coherence tomography images, and associated risk factors were in

High-yielding enzymatic method for isolation and culture of microvascular endothelial cells from bovine retinal blood vessels.

A simple and non-mechanical enzymatic method for the isolation and large-scale in vitro culture of bovine retinal endothelial cells (BRECs) is described. A sufficiently high yield of retinal microvessels was obtained from bovine eyes by brisk stirring of the retina with Minimum Essential Medium for 3 min, washing the pellet five times by repeated centrifugation at 300 x g and sieving in a single step. Pericyte contamination was eliminated by increasing the incubation period in an enzyme mixture and passaging the cells at a low concentration of trypsin for 1-2 min. The cells were grown in Iscov

Retinal blood vessels develop in response to local VEGF-A signals in the absence of blood flow.

The role of hemodynamic forces and other signals from circulating blood in guiding the development of the retinal vasculature was examined by following the growth of these vessels in organ cultures. Retinal vascular development in organ cultures was monitored by immunofluorescent staining of retinal whole-mounts using antibodies against ICAM-2, a specific marker for endothelial cells and by vascular adenosine disphosphatase activity. Under culture conditions, the retinal vasculature from mice at postnatal day 3 (P3) grew from the optic nerve area to the edge of the retina in a manner similar t

Increase in choroidal blood flow in rabbits with endothelin-1 induced transient complete obstruction of retinal vessels.

BACKGROUND: In a previous paper, we reported that retinal blood flow (RBF) ceased immediately after injection of 1 nmol endothelin-1 (ET-1) and no recovery of RBF was detected for at least 50 min. In this study, we confirmed the same duration of RBF cessation and measured choroidal blood flow (CBF) for 180 min. METHODS: We measured CBF in a rabbit model of transient complete obstruction of retinal vessels induced by intravitreal injection of a high dose of ET-1, using the hydrogen clearance method. We also investigated the effects of intravitreal injection of ET-1 on intraocular pressure (IOP

A unified VQ-VAE framework for few-shot retinal vessel segmentation and multidisease classification.

PURPOSE: To address the reliance of task-specific deep learning models on large annotated datasets, this study investigates a Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) based few-shot learning framework for retinal vessel segmentation and disease classification. METHODS: A compact VQ-VAE was pretrained on unlabeled fundus photographs to learn transferable discrete representations. The pretrained encoder was used to initialize multiple downstream models, including segmentation networks (U-Net, SegNet, ERFNet) and three additional architectures (FR-UNet, Swin-Res-Net, RV-GAN), as well as

AI-driven saliency-guided retinal vessel segmentation framework for sustainable digital pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate segmentation of retinal blood vessels is essential for the early diagnosis of ophthalmic and systemic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. However, challenges such as low contrast, complex vessel geometry, and the presence of pathological artifacts often degrade segmentation performance, particularly for thin vessels and boundary regions. METHODS: To address these challenges, this study proposes an AI-driven saliency-guided boundary refinement framework (SGB-Net). The model integrates a progressive boundary refinement (BR) module to enh

Retinal vessel imaging in inflammatory disease: From endothelial dysfunction to clinical evidence and translation.

Inflammatory processes drive a heterogeneous spectrum of diseases, including cardiovascular (CV), neurodegenerative, autoimmune, rare, and viral disorders, which together account for a major global disease burden. Despite diverse clinical manifestations, these conditions share systemic endothelial dysfunction (ED) as a common pathophysiological hallmark. The retina, accessible through non-invasive imaging, provides a unique window into systemic microvascular health. Over the past decades, retinal vessel analysis (RVA), both static and dynamic, has emerged as a robust tool for detecting and pre

Dynamic Statistical Attention-based lightweight model for Retinal Vessel Segmentation: DyStA-RetNet.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate extraction of retinal vascular components is vital in diagnosing and treating retinal diseases. Achieving precise segmentation of retinal blood vessels is challenging due to their complex structure and overlapping vessels with other anatomical features. Existing deep neural networks often suffer from false positives at vessel branches or missing fragile vessel patterns. Also, deployment of the existing models in resource-constrained environments is challenging due to their computational complexity. An attention-based and computationally efficient architecture

Retinal blood vessel diameters in children and adults exposed to a simulated altitude of 3,000 m.

Introduction: Technological advances have made high-altitude ski slopes easily accessible to skiers of all ages. However, research on the effects of hypoxia experienced during excursions to such altitudes on physiological systems, including the ocular system, in children is scarce. Retinal vessels are embryologically of the same origin as vessels in the brain, and have similar anatomical and physiological characteristics. Thus, any hypoxia-related changes in the morphology of the former may reflect the status of the latter. Objective: To compare the effect of one-day hypoxic exposure, equivale

Enhancing fine retinal vessel segmentation: Morphological reconstruction and double thresholds filtering strategy.

Eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy are progressive with various changes in the retinal vessels, and it is difficult to analyze the disease for future treatment. There are many computerized algorithms implemented for retinal vessel segmentation, but the tiny vessels drop off, impacting the performance of the overall algorithms. This research work contains the new image processing techniques such as enhancement filters, coherence filters and binary thresholding techniques to handle the different color retinal fundus image problems to achieve a vessel image that is well-segmented, and the

Cellular-Level Analysis of Retinal Blood Vessel Walls Based on Phase Gradient Images.

Diseases such as diabetes affect the retinal vasculature and the health of the neural retina, leading to vision problems. We describe here an imaging method and analysis procedure that enables characterization of the retinal vessel walls with cellular-level resolution, potentially providing markers for eye diseases. Adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy is used with a modified detection scheme to include four simultaneous offset aperture channels. The magnitude of the phase gradient derived from these offset images is used to visualize the structural characteristics of the vessels. The

The three-dimensional structural configuration of the central retinal vessel trunk and branches as a glaucoma biomarker.

PURPOSE: To assess whether the 3-dimensional (3D) structural configuration of the central retinal vessel trunk and its branches (CRVT&B) could be used as a diagnostic marker for glaucoma. DESIGN: Retrospective, deep-learning approach diagnosis study. METHODS: We trained a deep learning network to automatically segment the CRVT&B from the B-scans of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) volume of the optic nerve head. Subsequently, 2 different approaches were used for glaucoma diagnosis using the structural configuration of the CRVT&B as extracted from the OCT volumes. In the first approach,

Association between radiation, glaucoma subtype, and retinal vessel diameter in atomic bomb survivors.

We examined the relationship between glaucoma subtype and retinal vascular caliber as markers of ocular circulation. Subjects were Japanese atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After a screening examination, potential cases were subjected to further definitive examination. The diameters of central retinal artery and vein equivalents (CRAE and CRVE) on digitized retinal photographs were measured using an established method. Generalized linear regression analyses were used to examine the associations among vessel diameters, radiation exposure, and prevalence of glaucoma subtypes amon
