Abdominal soft tissue sarcoma: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with a variety of histological subtypes. However, in Japan, data on the clinical characteristics and prognostic profiles of these tumors are lacking. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the clinical features and outcomes of Japanese patients with retroperitoneal and abdominal STS. METHODS: We reviewed and analyzed retrospectively the data for 82 patients who underwent surgery for retroperitoneal and abdominal STS at Osaka University and affiliated hospitals from 2000 to 2007. The factors analyzed included patien

Hydrocele formation after sandwich irradiation therapy for testicular tumor.

Contralateral hydrocele formation secondary to irradiation, radical retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy, or both, in the treatment of tumor of the testis has, to our knowledge, never before been reported. Our experience with 8 patients in whom hydrocele occurred after the combined modalities of therapy prompted this report. Because these benign hydroceles cannot be differentiated from a second testicular neoplasm on the basis of symptom complex, duration, or time interval after therapy, high inguinal exploration is mandatory in every case.

Salivary gland tumours as second neoplasms: two cases and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Patients who survive malignant tumours have an increased risk of second neoplasms, including those of the salivary glands. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland is by far the most common type of second salivary gland tumour; other types have rarely been reported. We describe here two patients with a second tumour of the salivary glands. CASE REPORTS: The first patient was a 22-year-old woman with a low grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland, which developed 21 years after completion of chemoradiotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The second patient was

Partial Nephrectomy for a Massive Sporadic Renal Angiomyolipoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Introduction. Angiomyolipomas are the most common benign tumor of the kidney, associated with Tuberous Sclerosis in 20% of cases and arising sporadically in 80% of cases. Renal angiomyolipomas are neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with varying proportions of vasculature, smooth muscle spindle cells, and adipocytes, making management of such neoplasms a challenging endeavor. Possible management options include partial or radical nephrectomy and segmental renal artery embolization. Case Presentation. A 61-year-old woman admitted for a large retroperitoneal hemorrhage was discovered to have a giant

Uncommon primary pelvic retroperitoneal masses in adults: a pattern-based imaging approach.

There is a broad spectrum of primary pelvic retroperitoneal masses in adults that demonstrate characteristic epidemiologic and histopathologic features and natural histories. These masses may be classified into five distinct subgroups using a pattern-based approach that takes anatomic distribution and certain imaging characteristics into account, allowing greater accuracy in their detection and characterization and helping to optimize patient management. The five groups are cystic (serous and mucinous epithelial neoplasms, pelvic lymphangioma, tailgut cyst, ancient schwannoma), vascular or hyp

Recurrent Acute Pancreatitis Revealing Pancreatic Infiltration by CD20-Positive B-cell Lymphoma: A Diagnostic Pitfall in Extranodal Lymphoma.

Acute pancreatitis most commonly results from gallstone disease, alcohol use, metabolic abnormalities, or medication effects. Malignant infiltration of the pancreas is a rare cause of pancreatic inflammation and may present with symptoms indistinguishable from more typical forms of pancreatitis. Pancreatic involvement by lymphoma is particularly uncommon and may mimic pancreatic neoplasms or recurrent inflammatory pancreatic disease. We present the case of a 29-year-old woman with a recently diagnosed CD-20-positive B-cell lymphoma who developed recurrent severe abdominal pain and markedly ele

Split liver transplantation for retroperitoneal immature teratoma masquerading as hepatoblastoma.

Extragonadal teratoma originating from the retroperitoneum represents less than 5% of all teratomas and accounts for less than 10% of all pediatric retroperitoneal neoplasms. To date, there has been no report of teratoma managed with LT. This study reports an infant aged 3 months with retroperitoneal immature teratoma involving the hepatic hilum, refractory to chemotherapy and treated with LT. The patient was referred to our hospital for management of a growing abdominal mass. Histopathology of a fine needle biopsy of the lesion suggested the possibility of a hepatoblastoma with teratoid featu

Retroperitoneal solitary fibrous tumour with Doege-Potter-Syndrome - successful interventional therapy.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that may cause insulin-independent hypoglycaemia (Doege-Potter-syndrome). Although surgical resection is the standard treatment, non-surgical options may be required for elderly or multimorbid patients. CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old woman presented with severe nocturnal hypoglycaemia (<40mg/dl) and progressive weakness. Imaging revealed a large hypervascular retroperitoneal mass. Laboratory findings showed low insulin and C-peptide levels with an IGF-II/IGF-I ratio of 9.3, indicating paraneoplastic hypoglycaemia. B

Solitary Fibrous Tumor in the Retroperitoneal Space Arising from the Diaphragm.

BACKGROUND/AIM: We present a case of solitary fibrous tumor, arising from the diaphragm in the retroperitoneal space, that was resected with robotic assistance. CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a suspected right renal tumor. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a tumor (maximum diameter, 36 mm) protruding from the superior pole of the right kidney. The patient was scheduled for robot-assisted, retroperitoneoscopic, partial nephrectomy based on a preoperative diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma. Intraoperative findings

Metastatic testicular cancer presenting with hematuria and flank pain.

Testicular cancer (TC) represents 1% of male neoplasms and 5% of urological tumors. Most of seminoma patients and about 55% of patients with nonseminoma TC have stage I disease at diagnosis. TC usually presents with a palpable testicular mass incidentally found by the patient himself or its partner by palpation. It shows excellent cure rates based on their chemosensitivity, especially to cisplatin-based chemotherapy, but careful staging at diagnosis, adequate early treatment based on a multidisciplinary approach and strict follow-up are necessary. We present a case of a 25-year-old male patien

Retroperitoneal schwannomas: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are a rare group of soft-tissue tumors that are derived from the peripheral nerve sheath and rarely develop in the retroperitoneum. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the clinicopathological features of 4 patients referred to our unit between October 1999 and March 2004 who on radiological examination were diagnosed with pancreatic, adrenal, psoas and retroperitoneal fat tissue tumors and subsequently underwent surgical treatment. RESULTS: The preoperative diagnosis was incorrect in all cases. At time of surgery, we found a mass probably arising from the a

A case of large solitary fibrous tumor in the retroperitoneum.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm mainly originated in the pleural cavity. We report here an unusual case of a large SFT in the retroperitoneum. A 27-year-old female complaining of a palpable mass in the right flank with dull pain was admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of right retroperitoneal tumor. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large retroperitoneal tumor arising from latissimus dorsi muscle. Surgical findings revealed a partly encapsulated tumor and complete resection of tumor concomitantly with right kidney, 11th

Solitary fibrous tumor with giant multinucleated cells in the retroperitoneum - a case report.

CONTEXT: Solitary fibrous tumor is a distinct neoplasm, rarely recognized in extrathoracic sites. CASE REPORT: The article reports a new case in the retroperitoneum in a 55 year-old man, who presented with urinary symptoms. Tumor was completely excised, and the solitary fibrous tumor was diagnosed after pathologic examination and immunohistochemistry. The patient has remained free of disease for five years since surgery. CONCLUSION: An uncommon variant of retroperitoneal solitary fibrous tumor with giant multinucleated cells was documented in the study.

[Chlamydial infection with marked ascites that simulated ovarian cancer].

We describe a case of genital chlamydial infection with marked ascites and an adnexal mass that simulated a malignant neoplasm. Laparotomy was performed. Multiple adhesions between visceral and peritoneum, enlarged retroperitoneal nodes were found. The right ovary contained a cystic mass. Examination of the peritoneal biopsies and ascites showed chronic lymphofollicular inflammation and chlamydial infection was suggested as the aetiology. The patient was treated with antibiotics and discharged from hospital in well-being. At follow-up examination four weeks later the patient had no symptoms.

Malignant monotypic epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the retroperitoneum.

Monotypic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is an uncommon variant of angiomyolipoma, occurring primarily in the kidney and characterized by a predominance of HMB-45-positive epithelioid cells. EAML is generally considered a benign neoplasm, though rare cases exhibiting malignant behavior have been reported. We describe a patient with a primary retroperitoneal monotypic EAML, composed exclusively of atypical epithelioid cells, which metastasized to the liver and the mediastinum. This case represents, to our knowledge, the first description of metastatic disease occurring in an EAML of this par

[Peroperative diagnosis of pure retroperitoneal neurinoma misdiagnosed as uterine leiomyoma].

A case of pure neurinoma of the retroperitoneal space developing in the pelvis is described. This tumor (phi max, 15 cm) responsible for intense compressive symptomatology involving the pelvic organs, was at first mistaken for a uterine fibroid. The ultimate diagnosis both of neurinoma as well as every other neoplasm originating in the retroperitoneum can sometimes be very hard to obtain. Those tumors can indeed be misdiagnosed for other more common conditions both clinically and instrumentally and the rarity of this particular localization adds further trouble to the matter.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma with extensive cystic change causing significant diagnostic challenges: report of two cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma is a rare, aggressive malignancy, characterized by high rates of recurrences and the potential for metastasis. On imaging, these tumors typically present as a solid mass with lipomatous and non-lipomatous components. Cystic changes of dedifferentiated liposarcomas is exceedingly rare and might pose significant diagnostic challenges, with only a few cases reported in the literature. REPORT OF 2 CASES: We here present two cases of retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma with a rare cystic presentation in two female patients aged 51 an

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: actin expression, a new prognostic factor?

The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical outcome of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and to determine new prognostic factors. We perform a retrospective study of all the patients diagnosed with GIST in any location and operated on between 2000 and 2008 at our institution. We analyzed 35 patients, 16 males (45.7%) and 19 females (54.3%), with a mean age of 64 +/- 13.8 years. The tumors were located in the stomach in 22 patients (62.9%), in the small bowel in 10 (28.6%), and the retroperitoneum in three (8.6%). Referring to gastric GIST, endoscopy revealed an ulceration in the muc

Fine needle aspiration cytology of renal and retroperitoneal angiomyolipoma. Report of two cases with cytologic findings and clinicopathologic pitfalls in diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm that usually arises in the kidney, although rare extrarenal examples have been documented. CASES: Two cases of the neoplasm occurred in which fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies were performed. The first patient was a 73-year-old female with a history of breast carcinoma who presented with a large retroperitoneal mass. Transabdominal FNA biopsy revealed multiple fragments of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells, a few of which showed marked cellular atypia with occasional cells containing fat vacuoles, producing a lipoblastlike appeara
