Description of a return-to-work occupational therapy programme for stroke rehabilitation in Singapore.

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and the major cause of disability in Singapore. The number of stroke survivors is expected to rise with the increase in the ageing population. This paper describes how occupational therapists are involved in stroke and work rehabilitation in Singapore. A retrospective study of stroke clients referred to a vocational assessment unit in 2004 showed that 55% of the clients were able to return to work. The majority of the clients changed their job positions from blue-collar workers to clerical workers. On the other hand, the main reasons for poor outcome

Facilitators of and barriers to return to work after mild traumatic brain injury: A thematic analysis.

Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) may experience protracted symptoms affecting their ability to work. Several actors may facilitate or act as a barrier to a successful return to work (RTW). This qualitative study used semi-structured in-depth interviews with 22 adults with mTBI at 2-5 years post injury, targeting experiences of how different actors facilitated or acted as a barrier in the RTW process, and encompassed the mTBI trajectory from the acute phase to the post-acute phase. A thematic analysis with a hermeneutical phenomenological approach was used to analyse data. Th

Exploratory analysis to identify factors impacting return-to-work outcomes in cases of cumulative trauma disorder.

Current findings suggest that cumulative trauma disorders are multifaceted and have less predictable outcomes than trauma cases. The purpose of this study was to attempt to identify emerging patterns and predictive relationships in this diagnostic group that might be worthy of eventual prospective research. The data source was a comprehensive electronic database containing clinical information collected at point of care over a four-year period. A retrospective analysis was performed on 459 workers' compensation cases with upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders and a subset of 312 with car

Return to Work One Year after Moderate to Severe Traumatic Injury in a Working Age Population.

Background/Objectives: Physical trauma may cause long-term disabilities. The importance of place of residence in the return to work after injuries is little researched. The primary aims of this study were to describe return to work or school (RTW) at 6 and 12 months after moderate to severe traumatic injury and to investigate demographic and injury-related predictors for RTW with an initial focus on geographic centrality of residency. The secondary aim was to investigate the association between RTW and functioning. Methods: A prospective cohort study conducted at two Norwegian trauma centres.

Complete response to therapy: why do primary central nervous system lymphoma patients not return to work?

PURPOSE: Although primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) represent extremely aggressive brain tumours, high-dose methotrexate in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents has resulted in long-term disease control in a substantial fraction of patients. Advances in treatment efficacy with longer survival resulted in a focus on additional outcome measures such as quality of life (QoL) and neurocognition. Despite recent evidence of return to work as an important aspect of patients' QoL, little is known about occupational reintegration in PCNSL long-term survivors. This study aimed t

High rates of return to play and work follow knee extensor tendon ruptures but low rate of return to pre-injury level of play.

PURPOSE: Extensor mechanism ruptures (EMR) of the knee are rare but debilitating injuries that always require surgery to restore knee function. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to ascertain the rate of return to play following patellar or quadriceps tendon ruptures. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted based on PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, using the EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Cochrane Library databases. Inclusion criteria consisted of clinical studies reporting on return to play after pa

'South-Working': Return mobilities and remote work during COVID-19.

This article explores the experiences of professionals who, prompted by the pandemic, returned to their hometowns in Italy while continuing to work remotely, a trend known as 'South-Working'. I explore how the pandemic changed these individuals' usual mobility routines and led them to return home and reconsider life priorities, all while leveraging digital remote work and new mobility strategies. I draw upon ethnographic fieldwork, including online video interviews, observation in social media platforms and visits to co-working spaces across the northern part of Sicily. This article contribute

Trends in work-absenteeism and return-to-work among people with spine pain in middle income countries: A need for evidence.

BackgroundSpine pain is a leading cause of functional disability and work absenteeism globally. Multiple prognostic factors influencing return-to-work(RTW) among people with spine pain are reported from high-income-countries. However, findings from high-income-countries with 16 percent world's population, cannot be extrapolated to low-middle-income countries (LMICs) which constitutes 84 percent world's population. Hence, paucity of evidence from LMICs motivated present literature review.ObjectiveTo study work absenteeism and RTW profile of people with spine pain in LMICs, including intrinsic a

Return to work - estimated socioeconomic impact of spontaneous intracranial hypotension and effects of neurosurgical treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) due to a spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a debilitating but curable condition, often affecting individuals of working age, making a considerably socioeconomic impact likely. METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study in Germany analyzed work capacity in patients ≤65 years before and after surgical closure of a spinal CSF leak between April 2018 and September 2024. The economic burden was evaluated via direct hospital costs and indirect costs from productivity losses. RESULTS: Two hundred and ten patients (median age 45.5 ye
