Species distribution and frequency of isolation of yeasts and dermatophytes from toe webs of diabetic patients.

The paper identifies fungal species, looking at the incidence of fungal isolation and risk factors influencing the development of fungal infection and colonization of interdigital spaces of the feet in 509 diabetic outpatients. Using standard mycologic diagnostic methods, fungi were detected in toe webs of 122 (24%) diabetic patients. The finding of fungi was twice as common in interdigital spaces of one (85/16.7% of the patients) than both feet (37/7.3% of the patients). Yeasts were the most common isolates (95/18.7% of the patients), followed by dermatophytic moulds (24/4.7% of the patients)

Study of the micro-organisms associated with the fermented bread (khamir) produced from sorghum in Gizan region, Saudi Arabia.

Traditional bread (khamir) was made from sorghum flour of two local varieties, Bayadh and Hamra. The bread was prepared by mixing the sorghum flour with water and spices (onion, garlic, lemon juice and fenugreek) in a 1:0.8 (w/w) ratio and fermented for 24 h at 30 degrees C. Two other fermentations were carried out using an inoculum from the previous fermentation. The micro-organisms were isolated from different plates and identified using different characterization systems. Both total bacterial populations and lactic acid bacteria increased with fermentation time and reached the highest numbe

Fungal infections in cancer patients: an escalating problem.

Major advances in anticancer treatment have contributed to an increased frequency of severe fungal infections in patients with neoplastic diseases. Neutropenia remains the most important among the predisposing factors related to the malignancy or its treatment. Most fungal infections are caused by the commonly recognized opportunistic fungi Candida spp and Aspergillus spp, and the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidiodes immitis, and less often by Blastomyces dermatidis. However, recently newer pathogens such as Pheohyphomycetes, Hyalohyphomycetes, Zygomyce

Yeast-Derived Esters in Wine: Biosynthesis, Regulation, and Metabolic Engineering.

Esters are among the most significant volatile aroma compounds in wine, contributing predominantly to its fruity and floral notes. Acetate esters and medium-chain fatty acid ethyl esters are particularly important in defining aroma quality. Despite extensive studies, the metabolic regulation and sensory integration of these compounds remain incompletely understood. This review summarizes recent advances in the characterization of representative wine esters, including their aroma attributes, volatility, and concentration-dependent sensory effects. The contributions of several ester-producing no

Gut fungi exacerbates gallstone formation by activating neutrophil extracellular traps in the liver.

The involvement of gut microbiota in metabolic disorders, including gallstones, has been increasingly reported, mainly focusing on the study of gut bacteria. However, as a relatively small proportion of intestinal microorganisms, the homeostasis of fungi still plays an important role in maintaining the health of the body. Our study showed that compared with healthy volunteers, patients with gallstones showed intestinal fungal dysregulation, which was marked by increased fungal biodiversity and changes in composition. At the same time, patients with gallstones also showed changes in fungal-bact

Emerging opportunistic yeast infections.

A growing population of immunosuppressed patients has resulted in increasingly frequent diagnoses of invasive fungal infections, including those caused by unusual yeasts. The incidence of non-albicans species of Candida is increasing compared with that of Candida albicans, and several species, such as Candida glabrata and Candida krusei, may be resistant to azole antifungal therapy. Trichosporon species are the second most common cause of fungaemia in patients with haematological malignant disease and are characterised by resistance to amphotericin and echinocandins and poor prognosis. Effect of mercury and organomercurials on cellular glucose utilization: a study using resting mercury-resistant yeast cells.

AIMS: Mercury compounds are highly toxic to all types of living cells. Isolated yeast strains of Rhodotorula rubra showed high and low resistance pattern towards mercury and organomercurial compounds. To investigate the basis of differential sensitivity of these two types of strains, glucose utilization was measured in the presence of mercury compounds. METHODS AND RESULTS: Glucose utilization process remained unaffected in resting cells of highly Hg(2+)-resistant strain in the presence of HgCl(2) but not in the presence of phenylmercuric acetate and thimerosal. However, HgCl(2) significantly

Flower- and Water-Dwelling Yeasts Influence Nectar-Seeking and Oviposition Behavior in the Asian Tiger Mosquito with Distinct Volatile Organic Compound Profiles.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by flowers and aquatic microorganisms influence mosquito behavior, but the role of water- and nectar-dwelling yeasts remains underexplored. In Aedes albopictus, we characterized yeast communities from visited and non-visited flowers, and from colonized and non-colonized breeding-site waters in urban community gardens. Mint flowers were preferentially visited, and the yeasts Metschnikowia reukaufii and Aureobasidium pullulans, present at higher densities in this plant, strongly attracted adult males and females, respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that

The Skin Mycobiome of Patients With Atopic Dermatitis and Healthy Volunteers: A Case-Control Study.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin disease, for which dysbiosis of the skin mycobiome is considered a triggering factor. The aim of this study was to explore the skin mycobiome of AD patients and healthy volunteers (HV). The study included 50 AD patients and as many HV. Culture-based species identification involved a battery of conventional phenotypic tests and PCR sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 and 2 regions within the rDNA cluster. Culture-independent, metataxonomic sequencing was performed with ITS1 as the target region. The overall culture-positive
