Conflict and conflict resolution: parent and young teen perceptions.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this preliminary study was to describe a novel approach to examine the thinking of parents and young teens about conflict and conflict resolution in their relationship. The novel approach was that teens and parents were asked to solve, in focus groups, a hypothetical conflict situation without, and then with, a structured conflict resolution guide. METHODS: Two focus groups were conducted. The resulting data were analyzed with use of content analysis from a sample of 8 parent-young teen dyads. The young teens and their parents participated separately from one anot

The Impact of Job Characteristics on Burnout Among Chinese Correctional Workers.

Job burnout has long been recognized as a common occupational hazard among correctional workers. Although past studies have investigated the effects of job-related characteristics on correctional staff burnout in Western societies, this line of research has largely been absent from the literature on community corrections in China. Using data collected from 225 community correction workers in a Chinese province, this study assessed the effects of positive and negative job characteristics on occupational burnout. Positive job characteristics included job autonomy, procedural justice, and role cl

Assessing acrimony and coparenting in dissolved relationships: validation of the BACS-8 and the MCS-DR in a Spanish sample.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to validate two instruments, the Brief Acrimony Scale-8 (BACS-8) and the Multidimensional Co-Parenting Scale for Dissolved Relationships (MCS-DR), in a Spanish sample of divorced parents. These instruments were designed to assess acrimony and coparenting dynamics, including overt and covert conflict, in postdivorce relationships. METHODS: The sample consisted of 237 divorced parents (142 women, 95 men; mean age 49.1) who were legally separated/divorced, had dependent children, and resided in Spain. The participants completed the BACS-8, th

Fueling the turf battle. Institute of Medicine report pushes expanded scope for nurses; docs say study draws illogical conclusions.

The Institute of Medicine's recommendation to give advanced practice nurses more leadership roles in primary care is stirring up plenty of controversy. "The idea that physician oversight of healthcare will be compromised plays into the worst of the public's fears about healthcare reform," said Alexander Hannenberg, left, of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

The Role of Role Strain and Physician Authority in the Relationship Between Collaboration Orientation and Nurses' Job Satisfaction.

AIM: This study examined the psychological mechanism and structural boundary conditions linking nurses' collaboration orientation with job satisfaction. BACKGROUND: Nurses may value collaboration even when clinical structures limit how those values are enacted. Yet, existing research has largely focused on observable nurse-physician collaboration rather than the role-related process through which collaborative values translate into job satisfaction. The job demands-resources model offers a useful lens, as nurses' work attitudes are shaped by the interplay among personal resources, role-relate

Fatherhood among healthcare workers: perceived work-family conflict and its influential factors during the COVID-19 pandemic: cross-sectional and exploratory longitudinal findings from the VOICE study.

BACKGROUND: The increased mental distress among healthcare workers (HCW) during the COVID-19 pandemic has been well documented. Frontline research has rarely focused on fathers among HCW. This web-based multi-center study aimed to evaluate work-family conflict (WFC) among HCW fathers during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Work-family conflict was assessed in cross-sectional, partly overlapping subsamples of 2,844 fathers across four time points (T1: n = 1,155; T2: n = 930; T3: n = 343; T4: n = 416) from April 2020 to May 2022, and compared to 6,981 age-matched mothers and 1,194 male colleague

[Significance of emotion-focused concepts to cognitive-behavioral therapy].

Emotions are the central process of motivation and play a key role in adaptive behavior in humans. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy stresses the importance of changing both cognition and behavior, there is growing emphasis on direct therapeutic work on emotions and emotional processing, as problematic emotional processes are at the core of nearly all psychic disorders. This type of work is the goal of emotion-focused psychotherapy, which centers on direct change of problematic emotions, especially those which are usually suppressed resp. overregulated by the patient. This paper examines t

Rebel responses to disasters in conflict zones: a case study of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar.

Populations in conflict-affected contexts face overlapping drivers of disaster risk. This article explores the intersection of disasters and armed conflict through an analysis of the role of non-state armed groups, focusing on the Arakan Army (AA)'s response to Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar's Rakhine State in 2023. Using the process tracing method and drawing on interviews and secondary sources, the study finds that the AA's fragmented territorial control and parallel governance structures nonetheless enabled extensive humanitarian operations through collaboration with civil society and volunteer n

The body remembers: Adolescent conflict struggles predict adult interleukin-6 levels.

Struggles managing conflict and hostility in adolescent social relationships were examined as long-term predictors of immune-mediated inflammation in adulthood that has been linked to long-term health outcomes. Circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a marker of immune system dysfunction when chronically elevated, were assessed at age 28 in a community sample of 127 individuals followed via multiple methods and reporters from ages 13 to 28. Adult serum IL-6 levels were predicted across periods as long as 15 years by adolescents' inability to defuse peer aggression and poor peer-rated confl

Evaluation of the anti-conflict, reinforcing, and sedative effects of YT-III-31, a ligand functionally selective for α3 subunit-containing GABAA receptors.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, pharmacological strategies have implicated α3 subunit-containing GABAA (α3GABAA) receptor subtypes in the anxiety-reducing effects of benzodiazepines, whereas transgenic mouse approaches have implicated α2 or α5 subunit-containing GABAA receptors. AIMS: We investigated the role of α3GABAA subtypes in benzodiazepine-induced behaviors by evaluating the anti-conflict, reinforcing, and sedative-motor effects of the novel compound YT-III-31, which has functional selectivity for α3GABAA receptors. METHODS: Female and male rhesus monkeys were trained under a conflict pr

Public health intervention amidst conflict: Violence, politics, and knowledge frames in the 2018-20 Ebola epidemic in Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Research, policy, and donor interest in health systems in conflict environments has grown rapidly in recent years. The 2018-20 Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo is a critical case of healthcare militarization. The first-ever such outbreak in an active conflict zone, it grew notorious for violence against response teams, with attacks aggravating the spread of disease. However, while medical responders observed physical attacks, the causes of the violence remained largely unknown. Drawing on interviews and participant observation, we contribute civilian vantages of the way healt

Working from home and mental well-being at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This paper analyses the relationship between working from home (WFH) and mental well-being at different stages during the first two critical years of the COVID-19 pandemic, when governments repeatedly imposed lockdowns and enacted WFH mandates to contain the spread of the virus. Using data from a representative survey conducted at four different time periods in 2020 (first lockdown, subsequent gradual reopening), 2021 (further lockdown) and 2022 (restrictions widely lifted) in the 27 EU member states, it examines the changing role of several mediators over time: work-family conflict, family-wo

Moderated path analysis of the relationships between masculinity and men's attitudes toward seeking psychological help.

This study tested a theoretical model of one mediator and 4 moderators of the relationships between 2 masculinity variables (Traditional Masculinity Ideology and Gender Role Conflict) and Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services (Attitudes). Self-stigma was the hypothesized mediator, and the hypothesized moderators were (a) Depression, (b) General Self-efficacy, (c) Precontemplation, and (d) Barriers to Help-seeking. A sample of 654 men responded to an online survey of 9 questionnaires. After evaluating mediation in the absence of moderation, moderated path analyses were co

Parent-to-child aggression, intimate partner aggression, conflict resolution, and children's social-emotional competence in early childhood.

Early childhood is critical to the development of children's social-emotional competence, which predicts peer relations and school adjustment in later periods of childhood. The effects of experiencing or witnessing aggression on children's social-emotional development are well known, yet the role of conflict resolution within the family has not been sufficiently studied. Social information processing models suggests that children who experience positive forms of conflict resolution within the family are likely to generalize these experiences and related skills outside the family, and thus deve

Relationship between work-family conflict and unhealthy eating: Does eating style matter?

There is increasing evidence to suggest that work-family conflict is implicated in poor eating patterns. Yet, the underlying mechanism remains unexplored. The objectives of the present study were to demonstrate the interplay between work-family conflict, eating style, and unhealthy eating, and to test whether body mass index (BMI) and its interactions further explicate the relationships. In this study, 586 Malaysian adults (normal weight n = 437, overweight n = 149) completed a questionnaire, which included demographic variables, work-family scales, eating style measures, namely, restrained, e
