Validation of the Leuven Postprandial Distress Scale According to the Rome IV Criteria for Functional Dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: : The Leuven Postprandial Distress Scale (LPDS) is a validated patient reported outcome (PRO) measure for functional dyspepsia (FD)/postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) patients according to Rome III criteria. However, meal-related nausea or epigastric pain, part of PDS in Rome IV, were not addressed in this construct. Also, focus groups identified fatigue as a frequently reported complaint for which the European Medicines Agency requested further analysis. Our aim is to validate the LPDS in FD/PDS as defined by Rome IV criteria and to optimize the model by assessing the value

Analyzing the accessibility of Rome's healthcare services via public transportation: a complex network approach.

Access to healthcare services is vital for urban public health, significantly influencing life expectancy, equity, and economic development. This study investigates the spatial accessibility of healthcare services in Rome through public transportation, emphasizing system resilience during disruptions. We explore transport poverty, emphasizing that individuals without cars often rely solely on public transit for medical access. Our methodology integrates network analysis with spatial accessibility assessments. We constructed a graph model of Rome's transit system, where nodes represent stops an

Clinical Management and Therapy of Precocious Puberty in the Sapienza University Pediatrics Hospital of Rome, Italy.

Puberty identifies the transition from childhood to adulthood. Precocious puberty is the onset of signs of pubertal development before age eight in girls and before age nine in boys, it has an incidence of 1/5000-1/10,000 with an F:M ratio ranging from 3:1 to 20:1. Precocious puberty can be divided into central, also known as gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty or true precocious puberty, and peripheral, also recognized as gonadotropin-independent precocious puberty or precocious pseudopuberty. Thus, the main aim of this narrative report is to describe the standard clinical management an

The prevalence and burden of Rome IV faecal incontinence in ulcerative colitis: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in ulcerative colitis (UC) therapies, a relatively undefined proportion of patients experience faecal incontinence (FI) in the absence of active inflammation. For this group, there remains a significant unmet need with a limited evidence base. AIMS: We aimed to estimate the prevalence and impact of FI in UC. METHODS: In a prospective cross-sectional study, patients with UC completed a series of validated questionnaires, including Rome IV FI criteria, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-specific FI questionnaire (ICIQ-IBD), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale an

Constipation Symptoms in Multiple System Atrophy Using Rome Criteria and Their Impact on Personalized Medicine.

Constipation is one of the most common non-motor symptoms in multiple system atrophy (MSA); however, it has not been evaluated according to the standard diagnostic criteria for constipation in patients with MSA. We evaluated the characteristics of constipation in patients with MSA by using Rome criteria (Rome III), which has been validated and the widely used for gastrointestinal disorders. Fifty-one patients with MSA (29 female) were enrolled in the study. Based on the Rome III criteria, constipation was diagnosed in 29 patients (56.9%); irritable bowel syndrome was not detected. Thirty-seven

Characterization of spotted fever group Rickettsiae in ticks from a city park of Rome, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are vectors and important reservoirs for microbial agents that cause disease in humans and animals. Among these pathogens, the members of Rickettsia species play an important role in public health. AIM AND METHODS: One hundred twenty-nine ticks belonging to four tick species (Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus turanicus, Dermacentor marginatus, and Haemaphysalis punctata) were collected at different sites of the Insugherata Natural Reserve, localized in the urban area of Rome, Italy. Questing ticks were tested by PCR for Rickettsia spp., amplifying partial gene of ompA. RESULTS:

The Rome III criteria for the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia in secondary care are not superior to previous definitions.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although the Rome III criteria for functional dyspepsia were defined 7 years ago, they have yet to be validated in a rigorous study. We addressed this issue in a secondary-care population. METHODS: We analyzed complete symptom, upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, and histology data from 1452 consecutive adult patients with GI symptoms at 2 hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Assessors were blinded to symptom status. Individuals with normal upper GI endoscopy and histopathology findings from analyses of biopsy specimens were classified as having no organic GI disease.

A Rome III survey of functional dyspepsia among the ethnic Malays in a primary care setting.

BACKGROUNDS: The study aimed to survey for FD in a primary care setting in a population known to have an extremely low prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, with the hypothesis that in such a population, dyspepsia should have been relatively less common. METHODS: The Rome III FD Diagnostic Questionnaire was translated into the Malay language and later tested for reliability. A prospective cross-sectional survey was then performed involving 160 Malay patients attending primary care clinic after informed consent. Patients positive for symptoms of FD were subjected to upper en

Brain imaging approaches to the study of functional GI disorders: a Rome working team report.

Progresses in the understanding of human brain-gut interactions in health and disease have been limited by the lack of non-invasive techniques to study brain activity. The advent of neuroimaging techniques has made it possible not only to study the structure and function of the brain, but also to characterize signaling system underlying brain function. This article gives a brief overview of relevant functional neuroanatomy, and of the most commonly used brain imaging techniques. It summarizes published functional brain imaging studies using acute visceral stimulation of the oesophagus, stomach

Epidemiological study of an "hand-foot-and-mouth disease" outbreak observed in Rome in the fall of 1973.

An outbreak of "hand-foot-and-mouth disease" (HFMD) occurred in Nov. 1973 in a nursery school. Sixty-seven children were studied, 15 of whom presented clinical signs of the disease. Sixty-two percent of the HFMD cases and 18% of asymptomatics were proved to be infected with Coxsackie virus A 16. The ratio of clinical to asymptomatic infection of nursery-school children with confirmed Coxsackie A 16 infection was 58%. The accidental diffusion of the infection led to the occurrence of secondary cases. This allowed to establish the incubation period of the illness at 8 to 12 days, for 3 individua
