Ostertagia ostertagi in neonatal calves: establishment of infection in ruminating and non-ruminating calves.

An experiment was carried out to study the role of the ruminal function in the establishment of Ostertagia ostertagi in neonatal calves. Three groups of calves were fed either milk only (groups A and C), or hay and concentrate in addition to milk (group B) from birth. At the time of infection, ruminal function was negligible in groups A and C, whereas it was well developed in group B. Calves of groups A and B were each given 25,000 normal ensheathed infective larvae of O ostertagi and those of group C were given 25,000 infective larvae exsheathed in vitro. Daily faecal egg output and post mort

The effects of diet on some hepatic enzyme activities in the pre-ruminant and ruminating calf.

Three mild-replacer diets containing different amounts of lipid with differing fatty acid compositions were fed to pre-ruminant calves. These diets did not affect the specific activities of the hepatic enzymes, involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, which were studied. With the onset of rumination there was a general decrease in the activities of the glycolytic enzymes and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.43) and an increase in the activity of acetyl CoA synthetase (EC 6.2.1.1). In the ruminating calf the specific activities of some of the enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism

Evaluation of post-vaccination flock immunity against Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in small ruminants across selected districts of Borana zone, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious transboundary viral disease affecting small ruminants, with significant socio-economic consequences in areas such as Borana Zone, Southern Ethiopia. This sero-monitoring study was conducted in Yabello, Taltale, and Elwaya districts of Borana zone to evaluate the Post-vaccination immunity status of local sheep and goats against PPR. METHODS: Three stage sampling methods were used to select peasant associations (PA), villages and individual animals. A total of 901 sera samples were collected from 578 to 323 vaccinated goats and

Mechanisms of rumination change in adolescent depression (RuMeChange): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial of rumination-focused cognitive behavioural therapy to reduce ruminative habit and risk of depressive relapse in high-ruminating adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent-onset depression often results in a chronic and recurrent course, and is associated with worse outcomes relative to adult-onset depression. Targeting habitual depressive rumination, a specific known risk factor for relapse, may improve clinical outcomes for adolescents who have experienced a depressive episode. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) thus far have demonstrated that rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (RFCBT) reduces depressive symptoms and relapse rates in patients with residual depression and adolescents and young adults with elevated rumination

Rumination, co-rumination and latent trait cortisol (LTC): the moderating role of depression history.

Although research has linked rumination to various hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis indicators, few studies have examined whether rumination - and its interpersonal counterpart, co-rumination - is uniquely associated with trait-like individual differences in HPA axis activity. The present study tested whether rumination and co-rumination were related to latent trait cortisol (LTC), a trait-like marker of individual differences in HPA axis activity, and whether these associations were moderated by current and lifetime histories of depressive symptoms. Undergraduates (N = 85; M age = 19

Trait rumination and social anxiety separately influence stress-induced rumination and hemodynamic responses.

We aimed to investigate stress-reactive rumination in response to social stress and its association with social anxiety and trait rumination. From previous investigations we know that people with a certain vulnerability to rumination show increased stress-reactive rumination. However, up to date the possible influence of social anxiety on this relationship is still unclear. Therefore, we reanalyzed the data of two of our previous studies assessing healthy low and high trait ruminators and depressed patients performing the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). We measured cortical oxygenation using

Development and Initial Validation of a Scale Assessing Suicide-Specific Rumination: The Suicide Rumination Scale.

Suicide-specific rumination, a repetitive mental fixation on one's suicidal thoughts and intentions, may influence the transition from suicidal thoughts to behaviors. Research on suicide-specific rumination has been hindered by the lack of an independent measurement tool. This article presents the development and validation of a self-report measure of suicide-specific rumination across several samples with lifetime suicidal ideation (Sample 1: N = 494 students; Sample 2: N = 219 community members; Sample 3: N = 128 adults at high risk for suicide). The Suicide Rumination Scale (SRS) item pool

Transcriptional Reprogramming in Rumen Epithelium during the Developmental Transition of Pre-Ruminant to the Ruminant in Cattle.

We present an analysis of transcriptomic dynamics in rumen epithelium of 18 Holstein calves during the transition from pre-rumination to rumination in cattle-fed hay or concentrated diets at weaning. Three calves each were euthanized at 14 and 42 d of age to exemplify preweaning, and six calves each were provided diets of either milk replacer and grass hay or calf starter to introduce weaning. The two distinct phases of rumen development and function in cattle are tightly regulated by a series of signaling events and clusters of effectors on critical pathways. The dietary shift from liquid to

Relationships between milk fat and rumination time recorded by commercial rumination sensing systems.

Low rumination in the dairy cow is often assumed to result in reduction of saliva flow, rumen buffering, and milk fat, which is a major contributor to milk value in many pricing systems. Rumination time (RT) of individual cows can be measured with commercial rumination sensing systems, but our understanding of how daily RT (minutes per day) is related to milk fat production is limited. Our hypothesis was that between cows within a herd, greater RT would be associated with lower milk fat concentration. Data from 1,823 cows on 2 commercial dairy farms in Pennsylvania over 8 DHIA tests were analy

Susceptibility of ruminal bacteria isolated from large and small ruminant to multiple conventional antibiotics.

The pivotal aim of the present context was to isolate diversified group of bacteria from the ruminants and to evaluate their antibiogram pattern against 22 antibiotics of 14 different classes. The bacterial isolates from small and large ruminant (sheep, cattle and calves) were isolated from the rumen based on various colonies morphology, and subjected for preliminary antibiotics susceptibility assay using disc diffusion method. The most sensitive isolates (based on zone of inhibition) were selected for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of each antibiotic ranging from 1 to

Talking Together, Thinking Alone: Relations among Co-Rumination, Peer Relationships, and Rumination.

Girls are more likely to engage in rumination, associated with the development of mental health problems, as well as report higher levels of friendship quality, hypothesized to protect against these disorders. The current study examined whether co-rumination may drive simultaneous increases in rumination and changes in friendship quality among adolescents. The project included 360 participants (43% boys), ages 9.8 to 15.8 years, and analyses revealed that co-rumination mediated the link between female sex and both rumination and negative friendship quality. There was also a bidirectional relat

The internalizing pathway to adolescent substance use disorders: mediation by ruminative reflection and ruminative brooding.

Two subtypes of rumination were examined in relationship to substance use and substance use disorders in adolescents. In the 8th and 9th grade, 521 adolescents completed measures assessing depressive symptoms, conduct problems, and reflective and brooding subtypes of rumination. In 12th grade, adolescents reported substance use and were administered the substance use disorders modules from the DISC. Path analyses conducted with data from 428 participants indicated that neither depression nor rumination variables significantly affected the presence of substance use. However, indirect effects of

Brief report: adolescents' co-rumination with mothers, co-rumination with friends, and internalizing symptoms.

The current research examined co-rumination (extensively discussing, rehashing, and speculating about problems) with mothers and friends. Of interest was exploring whether adolescents who co-ruminate with mothers were especially likely to co-ruminate with friends as well as the interplay among co-rumination with mothers, co-rumination with friends, and anxious/depressed symptoms. Early- to mid-adolescents (N = 393) reported on co-rumination and normative self-disclosure with mothers and friends and on their internalizing symptoms in this cross-sectional study. Co-rumination with mothers (but n

Assessing rumination in response to illness: the development and validation of the Multidimensional Rumination in Illness Scale (MRIS).

The cognitive style of rumination extends existing cognitive models of emotional response to illness. In the absence of a specific measure, we developed the Multidimensional Rumination in Illness Scale (MRIS). In Study 1, an initial 60-item pool was tested, followed by confirmation of the factor structure in Study 2. In Study 1 participants (n = 185) completed the pilot version of the MRIS, then in Study 2 (n = 163) a reduced 41-item model was tested. Study 1: Exploratory factor analysis of a reduced 32-item scale indicated an initial four-factor solution for the MRIS (Intrusion, Brooding, Ins

Mindfulness and rumination: does mindfulness training lead to reductions in the ruminative thinking associated with depression?

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR; Kabat-Zinn, 1982, 1990) training on a self-selected adult community sample in the areas of mindfulness, rumination, depressive symptomatology and overall well-being. Targeting rumination was considered particularly important because a tendency toward rumination in nondepressed populations has been found to be predictive of subsequent onset of depression. As hypothesized, completers of the MBSR class showed increases in mindfulness and overall wellbeing, and decreases in rumination and symptoms

Epidemiology and Cost of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Eradication in Small Ruminants in the United Arab Emirates-Disease Spread and Control Strategies Simulations.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an important infectious viral disease of domestic small ruminants that threatens the food security and sustainable livelihood of farmers across Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The objective of this research is to analyze the disease's spread and its impacts on direct government costs through conducting three simulations of different control strategies to reduce and quickly eradicate PPR from the United Arab Emirates in the near future. A Modified Animal Disease Spread Model was developed in this study to suit the conditions of the United Arab Emirates. The in

Anti-lipopolysaccharide antibody administration mitigates ruminal lipopolysaccharide release and depression of ruminal pH during subacute ruminal acidosis challenge in Holstein bull cattle.

The effects of anti-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antibody on rumen fermentation and LPS activity were investigated during subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) challenge. Eleven Holstein cattle (164 ± 14 kg) were used in a 3 × 3 Latin square design. Cattle were fed a roughage diet on days -11 to -1 (pre-challenge) and day 2 (post-challenge), and a high-grain diet on days 0 and 1 (SARA challenge). For 14 days, 0-, 2-, or 4-g of anti-LPS antibody was administered once daily through a rumen fistula. Ruminal pH was measured continuously, and rumen fluid and blood samples were collected on days -1, 0, 1, an

Sexed semen: current state-of-the-art in small ruminants.

The rising global demand for animal products, driven by population growth and limited agricultural land, necessitates more sustainable and efficient livestock production systems. Flow cytometric sperm sex-sorting remains the only reliable technology available to control offspring sex ratios, thereby enhancing productivity in food-producing mammals. While the technology was originally developed and widely adopted in cattle, its application in small ruminants, particularly sheep and goats, remains comparatively limited and is largely confined to research and early-stage commercial use. This revi

Peste des Petits Ruminants Vaccine: Criteria for Assessing Its Thermotolerance.

The Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) live attenuated vaccines, the PPR virus (PPRV) Nigeria 75/1 strain (lineage II) and PPRV India Sungry 96 strain (lineage IV), currently used for control and eradication programme are very efficient vaccines as they provide the host, sheep and goats, a lifelong immunity after a single minimum recommended dose of 102.5 TCID50/mL. Unfortunately, both live attenuated vaccines are thermolabile and their use requires maintaining the cold chain from the manufactory premises to the field as most PPR-infected regions are facing of hot climate, with poor infrastructu
