Identification of a Candidate Starch Utilizing Strain of Prevotella albensis from Bovine Rumen.

The inclusion of starch-rich feedstuffs, a common practice in intensive ruminant livestock production systems, can result in ruminal acidosis, a condition that can severely impact animal performance and health. One of the main causes of acidosis is the rapid accumulation of ruminal short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) resulting from the microbial digestion of starch. A greater understanding of ruminal bacterial amylolytic activities is therefore critical to improving mitigation of acidosis. To this end, our manuscript reports the identification of a candidate starch utilizer (OTU SD_Bt-00010) using

In vitro ruminal fermentation, core nutrient, fatty acids and mineral matter of pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium L.) herbage at different phenological stages.

BACKGROUND: In ruminants, fibrous feedstuffs must be included in the ration to ensure normal rumen physiology and to prevent the occurrence of rumen-related metabolic diseases. In addition to being a source of fibrous feedstuffs, they contain energy depending on the level of digestion and protein, minerals, fatty acids, minerals, and secondary compounds. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the nutrient matter, fatty acid, mineral and in vitro rumen fermentation values of the pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium L.) plant. METHODS: The pennyroyal plant samples were collected at different phenolo

Are there phylogenetic differences in salivary tannin-binding proteins between browsers and grazers, and ruminants and hindgut fermenters?

While feeding, mammalian browsers (primarily eat woody plants) encounter secondary metabolites such as tannins. Browsers may bind these tannins using salivary proteins, whereas mammalian grazers (primarily eat grasses that generally lack tannins) likely would not. Ruminant browsers rechew their food (ruminate) to increase the effectiveness of digestion, which may make them more effective at binding tannins than nonruminants. Few studies have included a sufficient number of species to consider possible scaling with body mass or phylogenetic effects on salivary proteins. Controlling for phylogen

Mammalian stress hormones in saliva and rumen fluid affect rumen microbial fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and gas production in vitro.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the impacts of stress hormones on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and gas production in vitro. For experiment 1, artificial saliva containing 0, 3, 6, or 9 ng cortisol/mL was infused into four continuous culture fermentors in a 4 × 4 Latin square. Each period included 7 d of adaptation, a 3-d cortisol treatment period (CORT period), and 3-d post-treatment (POST period) where no cortisol was supplied. During the CORT period, pH, total volatile fatty acids, and isobutyrate tended to increase quadratically (P ≤ 0.15) as greater concentratio

The price of survival: comparative adaptation to high altitudes between yaks and cattle.

The yak (Bos grunniens) serves as an exceptional model for studying high-altitude adaptation mechanisms due to its evolutionary success in the hypoxic environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Previous research has largely focused on genetic and physiological traits of yaks; however, the interactions between rumen microbiota and host physiology under hypoxic conditions are poorly understood. As the largest digestive organ in ruminants, the rumen and its microbiota play a central role in digestion and host nutrition. In this study, a comparative analysis of digestive metabolism and rumen microb

Dietary inclusion of Pleurotus ostreatus spent mushroom substrate in corn silage-based diets: effects on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and greenhouse gas emissions using a RUSITEC system.

This study evaluated the impact of incorporating Pleurotus ostreatus spent mushroom substrate (SMS) into corn silage-based diets on rumen fermentation, fiber digestibility, and biogas emissions using the Rumen Simulation Technique (RUSITEC). Given the need to reduce feed costs and mitigate environmentally harmful emissions from rumen fermentation, SMS was evaluated as a partial replacement for corn silage at inclusion levels of 10% (T1), 20% (T2), and 40% (T3). These three treatments were compared to a control diet consisting of 100% corn silage, to assess rumen fermentation characteristics, n

Camelina straw as an eco-friendly forage alternative for finishing lambs: impacts on performance, rumen function and behavior.

The increasing frequency of droughts and water scarcity has intensified interest in drought-tolerant plants and their by-products as sustainable feed alternatives for ruminants. This study assessed the partial replacement of alfalfa hay (AH) with camelina straw (CS) at 120 (CS12) and 240 (CS24) g/kg of DM in diets of Grey Shirazi lambs (n = 24, average body weight = 22.7 ± 1.7 kg). No significant differences were observed in dry matter intake (DMI), final body weight (FBW: 40.4, 38.8, 40.0 kg), average daily gain (ADG: 285, 260, 278 g/d), or feed conversion ratio (FCR: 5.2, 5.3, 5.1) across tr

Ingestive behavior and nitrogen balance of confined santa ines lambs fed diets containing soybean hulls.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of substituting corn with soybean hulls on the ingestive behavior and nitrogen balance of Santa Ines lambs. A total of 25 lambs with an initial body weight of 20±2 kg at approximately six months of age, sheltered individually in stalls (1.10 m×1.0 m), considering an entirely casual experimental delineation. Soybean hulls were substituted for corn at 0, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 g/kg of dry matter (DM). The time spent feeding, ruminating, masticating, and resting was not affected by the substitution of corn with soybean hulls. In fact, the fee

Digesta retention patterns of solute and different-sized particles in camelids compared with ruminants and other foregut fermenters.

The mean retention times (MRT) of solute or particles in the gastrointestinal tract and the forestomach (FS) are crucial determinants of digestive physiology in herbivores. Besides ruminants, camelids are the only herbivores that have evolved rumination as an obligatory physiological process consisting of repeated mastication of large food particles, which requires a particle sorting mechanism in the FS. Differences between camelids and ruminants have hardly been investigated so far. In this study we measured MRTs of solute and differently sized particles (2, 10, and 20 mm) and the ratio of la

Chicken or the Egg: The Reciprocal Association Between Feeding Behavior and Animal Welfare and Their Impact on Productivity in Dairy Cows.

Feeding behavior in dairy cattle has a significant impact on feed efficiency, which is important for increasing the profitability of livestock and, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact. Feeding behavior can be measured by feeding time, meal duration, meal frequency, feeding rate, and rumination time. Higher feed intake is related to lower feed efficiency; whereas, an increase in feeding time facilitates chewing, reduces feed particle size and increases its digestibility. More frequent and shorter meals are usually associated with a more efficient use of feed due to improvement o

Effect of dietary inclusion of licuri cake on intake, feeding behavior, and performance of feedlot cull cows.

Licuri cake (LC) is an interesting alternative nutritional component for high-grain diets for ruminants due to its high protein (21.6% CP), fat (12.0% EE), and fiber (62.8% NDF) contents. We investigated the effect of increasing levels of LC inclusion on the intake, digestibility, feeding behavior, performance, and carcass traits of cull cows fed high-grain diets. Forty Zebu cows with an initial weight of 318 ± 38.1 kg, at 105 months of age, were confined in collective stalls and fed (ad libitum) a diet containing 0, 50, 100, or 150 g/kg LC on a diet dry matter (DM) basis. Digestion and energy balance in lactating dairy cows fed varying ratios of alfalfa silage and grain.

Forty-four multiparous and 43 primiparous Holstein cows were used to study the effect of dietary alfalfa silage: grain ratio on digestion, passage of digesta, and energy balance in a complete lactation experiment. Cows were placed on one of five treatments with forage contents from 38.2 to 98.2% (DM basis) during the first 12 wk of lactation. Forage content was increased during wk 13 to 26 of lactation to give diets containing 48.2 to 98.2% forage and again during wk 27 to 44 to give diets containing 68.2 to 98.2% forage. Both DMI and DM digestibilities decreased as proportion of dietary forag
