Effectiveness of micronized nasal irrigations with hyaluronic acid/isotonic saline solution in non-polipoid chronic rhinosinusitis: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Sodium hyaluronate has been proposed as a treatment for improving the symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis. The present study evaluated the effect of the intranasal administration of hyaluronic acid in a group of patients affected by chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty subjects aged 18-65 years affected by CRSsNP were enrolled. The subjects were randomly administered hyaluronic acid or isotonic saline solution by nasal nebulizer twice per day for 30 days. They were evaluated before (T0) and after the treatment (T1) with Sino-Nasal Outc

Endoscopic submucosal resection of gastric subepithelial lesions smaller than 20 mm: a comparison of saline solution-assisted snare and cap band mucosectomy techniques.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Application of endoscopic submucosal resection (ESMR) in the management of gastric subepithelial lesions (GSLs) less than 20 mm is gradually increasing because it allows diagnosis and treatment at the same operative session. In this study, we compare and evaluate the benefits of ESMR with an endoscopic cap band mucosectomy technique or saline solution-assisted snare technique in GSLs smaller than 20 mm. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database used at 2 academic tertiary care centers. A total of 63 patients (34 females, mean age 52

Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid is not superior to saline solution injection for ankle arthritis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid are potentially useful to treat ankle osteoarthritis, yet their effectiveness has not been proven. Both single and multiple-dose treatments for ankle arthritis with use of various hyaluronic acid products have been recommended, but few high-quality studies have been published. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a single intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid with a single intra-articular injection of normal saline solution (placebo) for osteoarthritis of the ankle. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with ankle os

Fluid therapy in acute pancreatitis comparing balanced solutions and normal saline: A systematic review, meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

BACKGROUND: Isotonic crystalloids are recommended as the first choice for fluid therapy in acute pancreatitis (AP), with normal saline (NS) and lactate Ringer's (LR) used most often. Evidence based recommendations on the type of fluid are conflicting and generally come from small single-center randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the effect of balanced solutions (BS) versus NS on patient-centered clinical outcomes in AP. METHODS: From four databases searched up to October 2024, we included only RCTs of adult patients with

Comparing the clinical effects of balanced electrolyte solutions versus normal saline in managing diabetic ketoacidosis: A systematic review and meta-analyses.

The first-line treatment of diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA) involves fluid resuscitation with normal saline infusion to correct hypovolemia. Hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis from aggressive normal saline administration was associated with worse clinical outcomes in managing DKA. Other choices for normal saline include balanced electrolyte solutions (BESs). This study aimed to compare the clinical effects between BESs and normal saline in managing DKA. This study was a systematic review of probing articles published from inception to October 2021 in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,

Efficacy and safety of hypertonic saline solutions fluid resuscitation on hypovolemic shock: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Fluid resuscitation is a fundamental intervention in patients with hypovolemic shock resulting from trauma. Appropriate fluid resuscitation in trauma patients could reduce organ failure, until blood components are available, and hemorrhage is controlled. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing the effect of hypertonic saline/dextran or hypertonic saline for fluid resuscitation on patient outcomes restricted to adults with hypovolemic shock. METHODS: We conducted a search of electronic information sources, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane libr

Effect of synovial fluid, phosphate-buffered saline solution, and water on the dissolution and corrosion properties of CoCrMo alloys as used in orthopedic implants.

The corrosion and dissolution of high- and low-carbon CoCrMo alloys, as used in orthopedic joint replacements, were studied by immersing samples in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), water, and synovial fluid at 37 degrees C for up to 35 days. Bulk properties were analyzed with a fine ion beam microscope. Surface analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy showed surprisingly that synovial fluid produced a thin oxide/hydroxide layer. Release of ions into solution from the alloy also followed an unexpected pattern where synovial fluid, of all the samples, had the

An in vitro study comparing the effects of Hextend, Hespan, normal saline, and lactated ringer's solution on thrombelastography and the activated partial thromboplastin time.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if 6% HES 450/0.7 (hydroxyethyl starch 450/0.7) in normal saline (Hespan) and 6% HES 450/0.7 in lactated Ringer's solution (Hextend) have the same inhibition of the intrinsic coagulation pathway and platelet function. Multiple studies have suggested that 6% Hespan inhibits coagulation and increases chest tube drainage and transfusion requirements in cardiac surgical patients. There have been few studies of the effects of 6% Hextend, a relatively new plasma volume expander, on coagulation and the results thus far have been mixed. DESIGN: A

The Efficacy of Normal Saline (N/S 0.9%) Versus Heparin Solution in Maintaining Patency of Peripheral Venous Catheter and Avoiding Complications: a Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Heparin is a sulfated polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan family with strong anticoagulant activity. It has been widely used to maintain intravascular catheters in patients requiring intravenous medication. It is believed that heparin prevents thrombus formation in the intravascular catheter, but since the 1980s, the necessity of the heparin solution for peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) flushing has been questioned in several clinical trials. According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), there are four special categories of High Alert Medica

The added value of hypertonic saline solution to furosemide monotherapy in patients with acute decompensated heart failure: A meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

We assessed the effects of hypertonic saline solution (HSS) plus furosemide versus furosemide alone in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). We searched four electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) until June 30, 2022. The quality of evidence (QoE) was assessed using the GRADE approach. All meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model. A trial sequential analysis (TSA) was also conducted for intermediate and biomarker outcomes. Ten RCTs involving 3013 patients were included. HSS plus furosemide significantly reduced the length of hospital sta

[Renoprotective effect of small volumes of hypertonic saline solution in chronic heart failure patients with marked fluid retention: results of a case-control study].

During intensive therapy of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients with marked fluid retention using high doses of i.v. furosemide the additional effect of agents which might exert osmotic attraction of interstitial fluids has been proposed. They are thought to impede the impairment of renal blood supply and glomerular filtration rate, which may be caused by a combined action of cardiac preload acute reduction, hypotension and neurohormonal activation. We therefore assessed in CHF patients with NYHA class III and BNP values from 900 to 1500 pg/ml, who were treated with i.v. furosemide, the predic
