Resilience of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) to salinity: implications for food security in low-lying regions.

Rising sea levels are threatening agricultural production in coastal regions due to inundation and contamination of groundwater. The development of more salt-tolerant crops is essential. Cassava is an important staple, particularly among poor subsistence farmers. Its tolerance to drought and elevated temperatures make it highly suitable for meeting global food demands in the face of climate change, but its ability to tolerate salt is unknown. Cassava stores nitrogen in the form of cyanogenic glucosides and can cause cyanide poisoning unless correctly processed. Previous research demonstrated t

Suaeda salsa: stress adaptation, soil restoration, and agronomic potential in salt-affected environments.

Suaeda salsa is a widely distributed annual euhalophyte that thrives under both saline and saline-alkaline conditions, making it a valuable model for understanding plant salt-tolerance mechanisms and a promising resource for saline agriculture. However, the integrated understanding of how its physiological, biochemical, molecular, and microbial responses collectively support salt tolerance remains fragmented. Moreover, how these traits contribute to soil restoration and agricultural use remains insufficiently understood. S. salsa achieves optimal growth at 200 mM NaCl and tolerates salinity up

The transcription factor LbYABBY1 of Limonium bicolor raises salt sensitivity by repressing the LbSAD2 pathway.

The recretohalophyte Limonium bicolor produces salt glands on its leaf surface and can thrive in saline soils. YABBY (YAB) family transcription factors participate in plant development and stress responses; our previous single-cell transcriptome data revealed high expression of LbYAB1 (Lb2G09016) in salt gland subclusters. Here, we confirmed the LbYAB1 expression in salt glands and leaf primordia using RNA in situ hybridization and promoter-driven GUS histological staining; moreover, LbYAB1 expression was induced under 6-benzylaminopurine treatment. We explored LbYAB1 function by generating ov

Auxin is involved in NtIAA17-mediated regulation of root development under salt stress in tobacco.

NtIAA17 acts as a positive regulator of salt tolerance in tobacco, which alleviates salt-repressed root growth by sustaining auxin homeostasis and antioxidant capacity. Across the globe, soil salinization severely restricts plant growth and crop yield, posing a serious threat to agricultural sustainability. While auxin is indispensable for the control of root development and abiotic stress adaptation, the precise mechanism through which this hormone modulates salt tolerance in tobacco remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that salt stress markedly inhibits root growth in tobacco, whi

DNA methylation variations induced by salt and alkali stresses and their differential responses in Tamarix chinensis L.

Soil salinization is a critical environmental challenge threatening plant survival. To adapt, certain plants have evolved tolerance to highly saline-alkali environments through long-term natural selection. Tamarix chinensis L., a typical halophyte with strong adaptability to salt and alkali stresses, serves as an essential germplasm resource and pioneer species for ecological conservation and remediation. However, the epigenetic mechanisms underlying its stress tolerance remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically characterized the tolerance and genome-wide DNA methylation varia

The SlbHLH92 transcription factor enhances salt stress resilience by fine-tuning hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis in tomato.

Ongoing soil salinization severely hampers plant growth and the sustainability of global crops production. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), acting as a critical gaseous signaling molecule, plays a vital role in plant response to various environmental cues such as salt stress. Nonetheless, it is not well understood how the transcriptional network regulates H2S production in response to salt stress in tomato. Herein, we determine that the bHLH transcription factor SlbHLH92 functions as a transcriptional activator in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), upregulating the expression of the L-CYSTEINE DESULFHYD

Hydrogen sulfide alleviates salinity stress in Cyclocarya paliurus by maintaining chlorophyll fluorescence and regulating nitric oxide level and antioxidant capacity.

Cyclocarya paliurus is commonly used to treat diabetes in China. However, the natural habitats of C. paliurus are typically affected by salt stress. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a growth regulator that is widely used to enhance plant stress tolerance, but the possible mechanism underlying H2S-alleviated salt stress in C. paliurus remains unclear. C. paliurus seedlings pretreated with NaHS (an H2S donor) were exposed to salt stress, and then, the leaf and total biomass, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, nitric oxide (NO) content, oxidative damage, and proline and phenolic content were investiga

PtoNF-YC9-SRMT-PtoRD26 module regulates the high saline tolerance of a triploid poplar.

BACKGROUND: Sensing and responding to stresses determine the tolerance of plants to adverse environments. The triploid Chinese white poplar is widely cultivated in North China because of its adaptation to a wide range of habitats including highly saline ones. However, its triploid genome complicates any detailed investigation of the molecular mechanisms underlying its adaptations. RESULTS: We report a haplotype-resolved genome of this triploid poplar and characterize, using reverse genetics and biochemical approaches, a MYB gene, SALT RESPONSIVE MYB TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR (SRMT), which combines

SERK3A and SERK3B could be S-nitrosylated and enhance the salt resistance in tomato seedlings.

Salinity hinders plant growth and development, resulting in reduced crop yields and diminished crop quality. Nitric oxide (NO) and brassinolides (BR) are plant growth regulators that coordinate a plethora of plant physiological responses. Nonetheless, the way in which these factors interact to affect salt tolerance is not well understood. BR is perceived by the BR receptor BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE 1 (BRI1) and its co-receptor BRI1-associated kinase 1 (BAK1) to form the receptor complex, eventually inducing BR-regulated responses. To response stress, a wide range of NO-mediated protein modif

[Analysis of effects of salt stress on absorption and accumulation of mineral elements in Elymus spp. using atomic absorption spectrophotometer].

Salinization contributes significantly to soil degradation and the growth and survival of plants. A high level of salts imposes both ionic and osmotic stresses on plants, resulting in an excessive accumulation of sodium (Na) in plant tissues. Na toxicity disrupts the uptake of soil nutrients. Plant uptake and absorption of macro-elements under salt stress have been studied in plants, but there is little literature addressing the effect of salt stress on plant accumulation and absorption of micro-elements. Species in Elymus genus are among the most important forage plants on high-salinity soils

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of a novel apple MdCIPK6L gene reveals its involvement in multiple abiotic stress tolerance in transgenic plants.

CBL-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) are involved in many aspects of plant responses to abiotic stresses. However, their functions are poorly understood in fruit trees. In this study, a salt-induced MdCIPK6L gene was isolated from apple. Its expression was positively induced by abiotic stresses, stress-related hormones and exogenous Ca(2+). MdCIPK6L was not homologous to AtSOS2, however, its ectopic expression functionally complemented Arabidopsis sos2 mutant. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid assay showed that MdCIPK6L protein interacted with AtSOS3, indicating that it functions in salt tolera

Role of nitrate reductase, nitric oxide, and S-nitrosylation in salinity stress in plants: A review.

Salt stress is a critical environmental factor that restricts plant growth and agricultural production. Nitrate Reductase (NR) is a core enzyme in plant nitrogen metabolism. Interestingly, studies have shown that the expression and activity of NR are tissue-specific, which may provide new targets for improving the salt tolerance of crops through genetic engineering. It influences plant salt tolerance through the regulation of nitrogen metabolism, osmotic regulation, and antioxidant defense. This review synthesizes emerging insights into how NR orchestrates plant salt tolerance through three in

Chromosome-scale genomes and population resequencing resolve subgenome diversity and halophyte adaptation in Salicornia.

Amid escalating water scarcity and groundwater depletion, halophytes such as Salicornia (Amaranthaceae) represent valuable models for extreme salt tolerance and hold promise for saltwater-based agriculture. Here, we show chromosome-scale genome assemblies for six Salicornia species, revealing four distinct subgenomes, reconciling our assemblies with two existing reference genomes (S. ramosissima UK and S. europaea China), correcting chromosome numbering and orientation. Comparative analyses across ploidy levels demonstrate genome expansion in North American lineages driven by Gypsy retrotransp

Exogenous hydrogen sulfide regulates plant salt stress response through the Arabidopsis splicing factor AtU2AF65a.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) functions as a signaling molecule that modulates plant development and stress adaptation. Alternative splicing (AS) is a crucial co-transcriptional regulatory mechanism by which plants adapt to environmental stresses. Splicing factors regulate changes in the splicing patterns of target genes and play important roles in plant responses to abiotic stresses. Previous investigations had revealed that the splicing protein U2AF65a and H2S both contributed to plant adaptation under abiotic stresses. In the current study, we found that atu2af65a-4 mutant plants exhibited increas

Integrated Multi-Omics Analysis Reveals the Involvement of Alanine, Aspartate and Glutamate Metabolism in Wheat Responses to Salt Stress.

Salt stress is frequently encountered by plants and is a major constraint on crop production. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a staple cereal crop that is important for human health and food security. However, the response mechanisms of roots from different wheat varieties to salt stress remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the complex response mechanisms of the salt-tolerant variety Longjian 114 (LJ114) and the salt-sensitive variety Chinese Spring (CS) to salt stress using integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. The results showed that LJ114 maintained better growth and exh

Differential ROS Accumulation, Antioxidant Defense, and Physiological Adaptation in Two Rosa rugosa Cultivars Under Sustained Salt Stress.

Salt stress is a major abiotic constraint that limits plant growth by inducing oxidative stress, disrupting photosynthetic processes, and damaging cellular membranes. Although Rosa rugosa is considered relatively tolerant to adverse environments, differences in antioxidant defense and physiological responses among its cultivars under sustained salt stress remain insufficiently understood. Comparative evaluation of these responses is important for identifying salt-tolerant germplasm and understanding stress-adaptation mechanisms. In this study, two R. rugosa cultivars, Siji and Fenghua, were su

Integrative Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses of Oat (Avena sativa L.) Seedlings Under Severe Salt Stress.

Crop productivity around the world is largely constrained by salt-induced stress, a key abiotic factor. Although oat (Avena sativa L.) can withstand challenging environmental conditions, the physiological and molecular responses underlying salt tolerance during germination and early seedling development remain insufficiently understood. To investigate these responses, 28 oat varieties were evaluated at the germination stage, and two contrasting varieties, the salt-tolerant Mengshi No. 1 (MS) and salt-sensitive Morgan (MG), were selected for detailed analysis under a severe NaCl treatment (300

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Ginkgo biloba to salt stress and exogenous melatonin.

INTRODUCTION: Soil salinization constrains plant growth, and enhancing salt tolerance is of great significance. METHODS: Here, Ginkgo biloba seedlings were treated with control (CK), salt stress (S), or salt stress + melatonin (S+M). Integrating physiology, transcriptomics, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we explored how melatonin enhances salt tolerance. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Salt stress reduced chlorophyll content, suggesting potential impairment of photosynthetic capacity, appeared to increase membrane lipid peroxidation, and led to substantial proline accumula

Proteomic analysis reveals the protective role of exogenous hydrogen sulfide against salt stress in rice seedlings.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important gaseous signal molecule which participates in various abiotic stress responses. However, the underlying mechanism of H2S associated salt tolerance remains elusive. In this study, sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, donor of H2S) was used to investigate the protective role of H2S against salt stress at the biochemical and proteomic levels. Antioxidant activity and differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) of rice seedlings treated by NaCl or/and exogenous H2S were investigated by the methods of biochemical approaches and comparative proteomic analysis. The protein-p
