The Correlation of Smartphone Screen Time With Resting Respiratory Rate, Head-Neck Alignment, and Chest Expansion Among University Students.

Background and objective Smartphone usage has increased considerably among young adults and is often associated with prolonged neck flexion and forward head posture. Excessive screen time may lead to alterations in head-neck alignment, musculoskeletal adaptations, and changes in respiratory mechanics. Previous studies have suggested that poor posture can influence breathing patterns and respiratory function; however, evidence regarding the relationship between smartphone screen time, head-neck alignment, and resting respiratory rate remains limited. This study aimed to assess the correlation b

Post-concussion screen time duration and type and its association with symptom resolution in youth aged 11-17 years.

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations in youth between objectively measured screen time (duration and type) during the first week post concussion and time to symptom resolution. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively analysed a school-going cohort aged 11-17 enrolled within 72 hours of sustaining a concussion. Participants wore a Narrative Clip (mini-camera) for 7 days to objectively capture out-of-school screen time, measured in minutes per standardised 960-minute day. Screen time use was classified as smartphone, television (TV), computer/tablet or gaming. The outcome was days to symptom resolution.

Exploring the link between screen time and severity of early childhood caries in primary molars: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a significant yet often overlooked paediatric health concern, particularly in India. Previous studies have linked excessive screen exposure, known as Problematic Screen Exposure (PSE), with caries in children. However, the association between PSE and the severity of ECC in terms of cavitated and non-cavitated lesions remains unexplored. This study investigates the prevalence of PSE among ECC-affected preschool children and examines its correlation with ECC severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 100 children aged

Cross-sectional and prospective associations of screen media use with non-sedentary time and body positions in young children.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity in preschoolers is essential for their development, but screen media use could displace free active play. Due to the sporadic nature of young children's movements advancements in classifying sedentary and non-sedentary behavior are crucial for understanding the potential impact of screen media use on their development. OBJECTIVES: To investigate cross-sectional and 18-month prospective associations between leisure screen media use and leisure accelerometry-based non-sedentary time, body positions and physical activity types in preschoolers. METHODS AND SETTING:

Screen time, sleep, brain structural neurobiology, and sequential associations with child and adolescent psychopathology: Insights from the ABCD study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The precise roles of screen media activity (SMA) and sleep problems in relation to child/adolescent psychopathology remain ambiguous. We investigated temporal relationships among sleep problems, SMA, and psychopathology and potential involvement of thalamus-prefrontal-cortex (PFC)-brainstem structural covariation. METHODS: This study utilized data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (n = 4,641 ages 9-12) at baseline, Year1, and Year2 follow-up. Cross-Lagged Panel Models (CLPMs) investigated reciprocal predictive relationships between sleep duration/probl

Risk Assessment of Maladaptive Behaviors in Adolescents: Nutrition, Screen Time, Prenatal Exposure, Childhood Adversities - Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify significant contributing factors to the risk of maladaptive behaviors, such as alcohol use disorder or obesity, in children. To achieve this, we utilized the extensive adolescent brain cognitive development data set, which encompasses a wide range of environmental, social, and nutritional factors. METHODS: We divided our sample into equal sets (test, validation; n = 3,415 each). On exploratory factor analysis, six factor domains were identified as most significant (fat/sugar intake, screen time, and prenatal alcohol exposure, parental aggressiveness, hyperactivit

Association between screen time and cumulating school, behavior, and mental health difficulties in early adolescents: A population-based study.

Early adolescents may daily spend excessive screen-time (with television viewing, computer/console gaming, discussion forums/chatting online, internet surfing, doing homework, and electronic mails) while its association with cumulating several school-behavior-mental-health difficulties (SBMDs) (poor-academic-performance, being obese, alcohol/tobacco/cannabis/other-illicit-drugs use, suffered violence, sexual abuse, perpetrated violence, poor social support, depressive symptoms, and suicide attempt) is poorly addressed. We investigated this association among 1559 middle-school adolescents from

Diabetes and pre-diabetes among household contacts of tuberculosis patients in India: is it time to screen them all?

SETTING: Pre-diabetes mellitus (pre-DM) and DM increase the risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). Screening contacts of TB patients for pre-DM/DM and linking them to care may mitigate the risk of developing TB and improve DM management. OBJECTIVE: To measure the prevalence of pre-DM/DM and associated factors among the adult household contacts (HHCs) of pulmonary TB patients. METHODS: Between August 2014 and May 2017, adult HHCs of newly diagnosed adult PTB patients in Pune and Chennai, India, had single blood samples tested for glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) at enrolment. DM was defined as

Prostate cancer screening: Is it time for a new approach? A review article.

Prostate cancer screening has presented a challenge to clinicians. Although the implementation of screening tests such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and digital rectal exam (DRE) has had a significant impact on prostate-cancer-specific mortality, these traditional screening tests have a relatively poor positive predictive value of clinically significant prostate cancer (CSPC), leading to unnecessary biopsies and treatment with a host of potential complications. Fortunately, much research has been done to optimize prostate cancer screening. This includes the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and

Family screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Is it time to change practice guidelines?

AIMS: Current guidelines recommend initiating family screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) after age 10 or 12 years unless early screening criteria are met. The aim was to evaluate if current screening guidelines miss early onset disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Children who underwent family screening for HCM before age 18 years were analysed. Major cardiac events (MaCEs) were defined as death, sudden cardiac death (SCD), or need for major cardiac interventions (myectomy, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator insertion, transplantation). Of 524 children screened, 331 were under 10 yea

Optimizing the Time for Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip Screening: Earlier or Later?

INTRODUCTION: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is still a common and important disorder of childhood, with a prevalence of 0.1 to 2/1000 children. Using ultrasonography (US) in screening of DDH reduces the rates of open reductions and complications. In the current study, we aim to detect the optimal time for US examination for detecting DDH to prevent unnecessary repeating US examinations and treatments. METHODS: Children referred to US examination for a healthy child screening program, according to the health policy of our country, are included in the current prospective study. Both
