A 4-year-old captive ringed seal (Pusa hispida) was treated with subcutaneous antibacterial injections for pus exuding wounds in the skin and associated blubber following a bite attack. Three months after the incident, the animal presented nystagmus and died the following day. At necropsy, there was a 25 × 18 × 25 mm well-delineated, opaque nodular mass in the lung, besides the skin ulcers and localized areas of discoloration in the blubber correlating with the bite wound and injection sites. Histopathology of the pulmonary mass demonstrated severe eosinophilic inflammatory infiltration among

Despite being obligate air breathers, many species of marine mammal are capable of spending most of their lives submerged in water. How they do this has been a subject of intense interest to physiologists for over a century, yet we still do not have a detailed understanding of the physiological mechanisms underlying this behaviour. What are the proximate mechanisms that trigger the 'decisions' to submerge and return to the surface? The present study proposes a model intended to address this question, based on fundamental concepts of cardiorespiratory control. Two basic hypotheses are examined

Organochlorine and mercury (Hg) pollution has been one possible reason for a decline in the size of the population of the Saimaa ringed seal (Phoca hispida saimensis) in Lake Haukivesi, Finland. In this study, we analyzed changes in the concentrations of organochlorine compounds (OCls) and extractable organic halogen (EOX) in the blubber of Saimaa ringed seals that died from 1981 to 2000. In addition, the present concentrations and biomagnification factors of OCls and Hg from the main prey fish of ringed seal and pike (Esox lucius) were determined. Concentrations of pollutants in bream (Abrami

In 1988 and 1989 tissue samples were obtained from the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) population found in the Dee estuary in the north west of England and from harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) from the populations in the Wash and north east Scotland and analysed for mercury and organochlorine compounds. Adult seals from the Dee estuary were highly contaminated with mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and one animal from the Dee contained traces of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), suggesting the recent use of this banned pesticide. The levels of hexachlorobenzene in the livers of

We compared the degree of orientation (anisotropy) of capillaries in skeletal muscles of animals with large differences in oxygen needs and/or tolerance to hypoxia (mammals of different size; reptiles; birds; mammals native to high altitude; diving mammals). In terrestrial mammals, we found a substantial increase in capillary tortuosity with fiber shortening, in muscles with large differences in capillary density (capillary counts/fiber mm2 in transverse sections ranging 450-4350). There was no systematic difference in muscle capillary tortuosity with body size (mouse to pony), or with adaptat

Of 29 neonatal harbor seals that had been abandoned, separated from their mothers, or stranded in the wild, 22 succumbed during hospitalization at the California Marine Mammal Center in the spring of 1982. Compared with standard reported harbor seal pup measurements, 8 of the nonsurviving pups were premature (ie, creamy-white lanugo coat, early pupping season birthdate, and decreased body size [6 to 10 cm shorter and 2.3 to 4.5 kg less than normal]). The premature pups and the young pups (less than or equal to 10 days old) had at least two of the following findings: jaundice, emaciation, labor

Phocine herpesvirus-1 (PhHV-1) has been associated with morbidity and high mortality in neonatal harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) along the Pacific coast of California (USA) and in northern Europe. Seals dying with PhHV-1 associated disease in California primarily have histopathologic evidence of adrenal necrosis or adrenalitis with herpesviral inclusion bodies. Little is known about prevalence of exposure to PhHV-1, modes of disease transmission, and viral pathogenesis in free-ranging harbor seal populations. To evaluate the prevalence in North America, 866 serum samples collected between 1994 a

Papillomaviridae is a diverse family of circular, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) viruses that infect a broad range of mammalian, avian and fish hosts. While papillomaviruses have been characterized most extensively in humans, the study of non-human papillomaviruses has contributed greatly to our understanding of their pathogenicity and evolution. Using high-throughput sequencing approaches, we identified 7 novel papillomaviruses from vaginal swabs collected from 81 adult female Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) in the Ross Sea of Antarctica between 2014-2017. These seven papillomavirus geno

Environmental pollution often accompanies the expansion and urbanization of human populations where sewage and wastewaters commonly have an impact on the marine environments. Here, we explored the potential for faecal bacterial pathogens, of anthropic origin, to spread to marine wildlife in coastal areas. The common zoonotic bacterium Campylobacter was isolated from grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), an important sentinel species for environmental pollution, and compared to isolates from wild birds, agricultural sources and clinical samples to characterize possible transmission routes. Campyloba

This study analyzes morphometrically 17 skulls of the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus housed in different Italian Museums and collections. We considered several morphometric variables (31 linear, 1 volumetric and 1 surface area measurements). In addition, we identified, measured and compared two nonmorphometric variables, namely, the bone densities of selected areas obtained using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) device. The high correlation coefficient of all variables indicated continuous growth with the onset of age. The ranking of the hierarchical cluster analysis identif

Long-chain n-3 PUFA in fish oil have modulating effects on inflammatory responses. The aim of this open pilot study was to investigate whether duodenal seal oil administration would benefit patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Seal oil (10 mL) was administered three times a day directly into the distal part of the duodenum via a nasoduodenal feeding tube for 10 d in 10 patients, 5 of whom had Crohn's disease and 5 ulcerative colitis. Nine of the 10 patients suffered from IBD-associated joint pain. Various parameters of disease activity and FA incorporation in tissues were analyzed b

Sixteen beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) and fifteen ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from the western arctic region of Canada were examined for giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Intestinal contents from the rectum and colon were collected from animals slaughtered by Inuit hunters. A fluorescent monoclonal antibody identified Giardia sp. cysts in three of 15 (20%) seals. Thus, ringed seals are implicated as a potential reservoir for this zoonosis in the arctic.

Global changes in the marine Arctic ecosystem affecting the demography of fish and seal populations may also alter their anisakid parasite populations size, potentially leading to genetic erosion in gene pools. Contracaecum osculatum sp. B, an Arctic member of the C. osculatum (s.l.) species complex, parasitizes Arctic and sub-Arctic seals and fish. This study aimed to compare parasite genetic diversity across the Nordic Seas over time, using historical specimens (1985-1986) and contemporary ones (2021-2022) obtained from seals and fish of the same regions. Parasites were first identified by s

BACKGROUND: Elephant seals exhibit extreme hypoxemic tolerance derived from repetitive hypoxia/reoxygenation episodes they experience during diving bouts. Real-time assessment of the molecular changes underlying protection against hypoxic injury in seals remains restricted by their at-sea inaccessibility. Hence, we developed a proliferative arterial endothelial cell culture model from elephant seals and used RNA-seq, functional assays, and confocal microscopy to assess the molecular response to prolonged hypoxia.
RESULTS: Seal and human endothelial cells exposed to 1% O2 for up to 6 h respond

A survey for Brucella spp. antibodies was undertaken on 164 serum samples from 144 Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) from the northwestern Hawaiian Islands collected between 1995 and 2002. The buffered antigen plate agglutination test (BPAT), the indirect enzyme immunoassay (I-ELISA), the competitive enzyme immunoassay (C-ELISA), and the fluorescence polarization assay (FPA) were compared with regard to their ability in detecting antibodies to Brucella spp. in the serum samples. Overall, antibodies were detected in 28 (17.1%) animals, using the BPAT test, 25 (15.2%) by the C-ELISA,

In pregnant seals the dive-associated constriction of the uterine artery is inhibited for unknown reasons. The seal fetus has an extremely large and active pineal gland, not found in any other mammals. We have investigated if the pineal hormone melatonin affects fetal blood supply during diving. Using isolated ring segments of the uterine artery from pregnant hooded seals (Cystophora cristata), we measured the change in isometric tension caused by noradrenaline (NA) with and without physiological concentrations of melatonin. Melatonin alone had no effects while NA increased the tension in a do

A comparison of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates from seals (pinnipeds) in Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Great Britain and New Zealand was undertaken to determine their relationships to each other and their taxonomic position within the complex. Isolates from 30 cases of tuberculosis in six species of pinniped and seven related isolates were compared to representative and standard strains of the M. tuberculosis complex. The seal isolates could be distinguished from other members of the M. tuberculosis complex, including the recently defined 'Mycobacterium canettii' and 'Mycobacteri

Three strains of a previously undescribed Actinomyces-like bacterium were isolated from samples taken from two dead seals and a porpoise. Biochemical testing and PAGE analysis of whole-cell proteins indicated the strains were phenotypically similar to each other but different from previously described Actinomyces and Arcanobacterium species. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies showed the organisms from marine animals were genetically closely related and represent a hitherto unknown subline within the genus Actinomyces (sequence divergence values > 6% with recognized species). The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), and mercury (Hg) were determined in blubber and liver tissues of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) collected along the northeast coast of the U.S. Average PCB concentrations in seal blubber (sum of congeners) were 12.0 micrograms/g (wet weight) with a range of 7.30 to 24.3 micrograms/g in 1980 and 6.66 micrograms/g (wet weight) with a range of 2.61 to 11.3 micrograms/g in 1990-1992. Marine mammals, particularly seals, are susceptible to both avian and human influenza A viruses (IAVs), making them potential intermediates for zoonotic virus emergence. In recent decades, repeated transmissions of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) from wild aquatic birds, their natural reservoir, have caused significant mortality in seals. Defining the molecular determinants of viral adaptation in marine mammals, and their implications for replication in human cells, is therefore essential. The non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of AIV, a key antagonist of the interferon (IFN) response, plays a cent
