Prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in women and its association with level of independent physical activity combined with sedentary behavior.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and its association with the level of physical activity, alone and combined with sedentary behavior. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed. The sample was composed of 317 women aged between 24 and 59 years. Sarcopenic obesity was determined by the coexistence of sarcopenia (reduced muscle mass and strength) and obesity (% fat). Dual-energy x-ray absorption was used to evaluate muscle mass and % fat, with cutoff points of <15 kg and <31.71%, respectively. Strength was assessed by the handgrip test, with a cu

Effects of Sedentary Behavior Reduction on Blood Pressure in Desk Workers: Results From the RESET-BP Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) is observationally associated with cardiovascular disease risk. However, randomized clinical trials testing causation are limited. We hypothesized that reducing SB would decrease blood pressure (BP) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) in sedentary adults. METHODS: This parallel-arm, 3-month randomized clinical trial recruited desk workers, age 18 to 65 years, with systolic BP 120 to 159 or diastolic BP (DBP) 80 to 99 mm Hg, off antihypertensive medications, and reporting <150 min/wk of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Participants were randomized

Identifying the causal relationship between sedentary behavior and heart failure: Insights from a Mendelian randomization study and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have revealed that a lack of physical exercise may be linked to a higher risk of heart failure (HF). Here, the causal relationship between sedentary behavior (SB) and HF was investigated using Mendelian randomization (MR). HYPOTHESIS: SB was considered as an important risk factor of HF. METHODS: Single nucleotide polymorphisms with a genome-wide statistical significance threshold of <5 × 10-8 among the SB-proxied phenotypes (TV screen time, computer use, and driving) from genome-wide association study (GWAS) datasets were identified as instrumental variables

Sedentary Behavior and Pain after Physical Activity in Women with Fibromyalgia-The Influence of Pain-Avoidance Goals and Catastrophizing.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic pain and fatigue that triggers a functional disability caused by the lack of activity. Pain catastrophizing may contribute to avoiding activity with the intention of managing pain levels. Based on the sedentary behavior with fibromyalgia, the present study assessed the preference of pain-avoidance goals and pain catastrophizing as mediator and moderator variables, respectively, that influence pain perception after a 6-min-walking test. METHODS: The sample was composed of 76 women with fibromyalgia (mean age = 55.05, SD = 7.70). Previous sed

Impact of Sedentary Behaviors on Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Disease: An Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are among the leading causes of mortality in the western world, and high blood pressure is among the greatest risk factors for CVD. Given that most of a person's waking hours are spent in sedentary behaviors, understanding the cardiovascular impact of a sedentary lifestyle is imperative. Although limiting sedentary time is encouraged in public health messaging, individual reviews analyzing its impact on clinically relevant cardiovascular outcomes such as blood pressure and CVD exhibit conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: We conducted an umbrella review of

The potential association between sedentary behaviors and risk of temporomandibular disorders: evidence from Mendelian randomization analysis.

The role of sedentary behaviors in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to investigate the potential association between sedentary behaviors and TMD using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. The MR method was employed to assess the causal association between sedentary behaviors and the risk of TMD. Genetic variants associated with sedentary behaviors, such as watching TV (Television), using computers and driving, were used as instrumental variables (IVs). MR analysis was performed using inverse variance-weighted (IVW) and weighted median me

Associations of nonoccupational sedentary behaviors with cardiometabolic outcomes: coronary artery risk development in young adults (CARDIA).

BACKGROUND: The association between sedentary behavior (SB) and cardiometabolic risk may differ by SB domain and context. Nonoccupational SB is particularly important because it is discretionary and more amenable to change. This study estimated associations of nonoccupational SB contexts with hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: A total of 3370 middle-aged adults (50.1 ± 3.6 years; 56% F) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study were included. Associations of Sleep Duration, Quality, and Timing With Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors Among High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient physical activity (PA) is associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mortality, yet only 26.1% of US high school students report meeting the 60-minute daily PA guideline. Adolescents' sleep may contribute to their activity patterns. However, findings in this area have been inconsistent, and few studies have used both objectively measured sleep and PA. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty ninth-grade students (mean age = 14.7, SD = 0.5) in Minnesota wore wrist actigraphs for 7 days to assess weekday and weekend sleep duration, midpoint, efficiency, latency, moderat

Accelerometer-measured physical activity patterns in daily life and their association with factors of sedentary behavior in people with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: Being physically active is important, but people with epilepsy (PWE) tend to have a sedentary lifestyle. There is limited evidence about physical activity patterns in PWE using objective measures. The aims of this study were: (1) to examine the physical activity patterns of PWE, (2) compare activity patterns between PWE in terms of drug-resistant epilepsy and medically controlled epilepsy with age- and sex-matched healthy controls; and (3) explore the association between physical activity patterns and body function and structure, activity and participation, and quality of life of P

Extending Our Understanding of the Social Determinants of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors in Families: A Systems Mapping Approach.

BACKGROUND: The social environment is important to consider for effective promotion of movement behaviors like increased physical activity (PA) and reduced sedentary behavior (SB); yet, it is less often considered than individual and built environments. One way to advance social environment research is to develop system maps, an innovative, participatory, action-oriented research process that actively engages stakeholders to visualize system structures and explore how systems "work." The purpose of this research was to develop PA and SB system maps of the social environment embedded within the
