The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex promotes self-control by inhibiting the egocentric perspective.

The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) plays a crucial role in social cognitive functions, including perspective-taking. Although perspective-taking has been linked to self-control, the mechanism by which the dmPFC might facilitate self-control remains unclear. Using the multimodal neuroimaging dataset from the Human Connectome Project (Study 1, N =978 adults), we established a reliable association between the dmPFC and self-control, as measured by discounting rate-the tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, delayed ones. Experiments (Study 2, N = 36 adults) involving hig

Characterization of the immune response in subjects with self-healing cutaneous leishmaniasis.

In patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis in areas of Leishmania braziliensis transmission, ulcers may heal without therapy. In the present study, we evaluated the T cell responses of 10 subjects who two years earlier had a rapidly (less than three months) self-healing cutaneous disease. The immunologic responses of these cases were determined by intradermal skin test, measurements of antibodies, lymphocyte proliferative responses, and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production in cultures stimulated with Leishmania antigens. These data were compared with those observed in 10 other patients with a

Targeted neuromodulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex alleviates altered affective response evaluation in lonely individuals.

Loneliness has been suggested to be linked to increased bottom-up appraisal processes of social threat coupled with top-down emotion regulation mechanisms. We have recently found a partial confirmation for such mechanisms in our large scale study (Mąka et al., in press), thus, in this preregistered double-blind study, we tested the effects of noninvasive brain stimulation over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) on emotional response and regulation in lonely individuals. 120 individuals received active (2 mA) or sham transcranial direct current stimulation over the left or right dlPFC i

Neural overlap between resting state and self-relevant activity in human subcallosal cingulate cortex--single unit recording in an intracranial study.

High activity of the default mode network (DMN) has been proposed to be central in processing self-relevant events. Thus far, this hypothesis of DMN function has not been tested directly using neurophysiological techniques. To test for the link between frontal midline DMN activity and self-relevant processing we measured neuronal activity (single-neurons' firing rates) in human subcallosal cingulate cortex (SCC) in the course of Deep Brain Stimulation surgery. We find that firing rates in SCC did not change during the presentation of specifically self-relevant stimuli when compared to the prec

Mechanical acupuncture at HT7 attenuates alcohol self-administration in rats by modulating neuroinflammation and altering mPFC-habenula-VTA circuit activity.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder is a chronic disorder with significant limitations in pharmacological treatments, necessitating the exploration of non-pharmacological interventions. METHODS: We used a model of alcohol self-administration (10% v/v) to analyze behavioral, neurochemical, and signaling mechanisms. RESULTS: Our findings demonstrate that stimulation of the HT7 acupuncture point significantly decreased the frequency of active lever presses in rats self-administering alcohol (p < 0.05). Alcohol self-administration increased microglial activity and sigma 1 receptor expression in t

(±)VK4-40, a novel dopamine D3 receptor partial agonist, attenuates cocaine reward and relapse in rodents.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite widespread abuse of cocaine, there are no approved treatments for cocaine use disorder. Chronic cocaine use is associated with up-regulated dopamine D3 receptor expression in the brain. Therefore, most D3 -based medication development has focused on D3 antagonists. However, D3 antagonists do not attenuate cocaine intake under "easy" self-administration conditions, when response requirements are low. We evaluated a novel, highly selective and metabolically stable D3 partial agonist, (±)VK4-40, for its efficacy in reducing cocaine intake and relapse to drug seekin

That's not quite me: limb ownership encoding in the brain.

With congruent stimulation of one's limb together with a fake counterpart, an illusory self-attribution of the fake limb can be induced. Such illusions have brought profound insights into the cognitive and neuronal mechanisms underlying temporary changes in body representation, but to put them in perspective, they need to be compared with ownership as experienced for one's real body. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare the neuronal correlates of touch under different degrees of body ownership. Participants' left and right arms were stimulated either alone or togethe

Optokinetic motion sickness: continuous head movements attenuate the visual induction of apparent self-rotation and symptoms of motion sickness.

Symptoms of motion sickness are sometimes experienced during exposure to optokinetic stimulation. Two experimetns were performed to compare the symptoms of motion sickness elicited when subjects were exposed to incremental changes in optokinetic stimulation while sitting passively and while continuously executing shoulder-to-shoulder head movements. In the first experiment, a fixed head-movement frequency (20 cpm) was used, wheras in the second the subjects varied the frequency of their head movements in order to maintain suppression of illusory self-rotation. In both experiments, subjects in

Episodic Memory Precision and Reality Monitoring Following Stimulation of Angular Gyrus.

The qualities of remembered experiences are often used to inform "reality monitoring" judgments, our ability to distinguish real and imagined events. Previous experiments have tended to investigate only whether reality monitoring decisions are accurate or not, providing little insight into the extent to which reality monitoring may be affected by qualities of the underlying mnemonic representations. We used a continuous-response memory precision task to measure the quality of remembered experiences that underlie two different types of reality monitoring decisions: self/experimenter decisions t

Experimental evidence that mutated-self peptides derived from mitochondrial DNA somatic mutations have the potential to trigger autoimmunity.

Autoimmune disease is a critical health concern, whose etiology remains enigmatic. We hypothesized that immune responses to somatically mutated self proteins could have a role in the development of autoimmune disease. IFN-γ secretion by T cells stimulated with mitochondrial peptides encoded by published mitochondrial DNA was monitored to test the hypothesis. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of healthy controls and autoimmune patients were assessed for their responses to the self peptides and mutated-self peptides differing from self by one amino acid. None of the self peptides

Causal evidence for task-specific involvement of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex in human social cognition.

The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) is a key hub of the 'social brain', but little is known about specific processes supported by this region. Using focal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) and a social cognitive battery with differing demands on self-other processing, we demonstrate specific involvement of the dmPFC in tasks placing high demands on self-other processing. Specifically, excitatory (anodal) HD-tDCS enhanced the integration of external information into the self for explicit higher-order socio-cognitive tasks across cognitive domains; i.e. visu

Speech Biomarkers for Quantifying Effects of Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Dysarthria is one of the most common and disabling side effects of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). Stimulation often exacerbates speech dysfunction beyond the effects of PD progression, likely because of current spread to structures surrounding the STN. This study aimed to develop speech biomarkers sensitive to DBS-induced dysarthria by isolating stimulation side effects and mapping their emergence across incrementally increased amplitudes. METHODS: Twenty-four PD patients with bilateral STN-DBS completed a standardized speech asses

Placebo hampers ability to self-regulate brain activity: A double-blind sham-controlled neurofeedback study.

It is still poorly understood how unspecific effects peripheral to the supposed action mechanism of neurofeedback (NF) influence the ability to self-regulate one's own brain signals. Recently, skeptical researchers have even attributed the lion's part of therapeutic outcomes of NF to placebo and other psychosocial factors. Here, we investigated whether and by which mechanisms unspecific factors influence neural self-regulation during NF. To manipulate the impact of unspecific influences on NF performance, we used a sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as active placebo intervent

The effects of surface electrical stimulation plus voice therapy in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effects of surface electrical stimulation plus voice therapy on voice in dysphonic patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. METHOD: Patients were assigned to 3 treatment groups (n = 28 per group) and received daily treatment for 3 weeks on 5 days a week. All three groups received voice therapy (usual care). In addition, two groups received surface electrical stimulation, either motor-level or sensory-level stimulation. A standardised measurement protocol to evaluate therapeutic effects included the Voice Handicap Index and videolaryngostroboscopy

Expanded Spatiotemporal Concept of Cortical Visual-Vestibular Interaction in Humans: A fMRI Study on Visually Induced Motion Perception.

PURPOSE: This high-resolution fast fMRI study explores visual-vestibular network interactions in expanded spatial and temporal detail. Under natural conditions coherent visual motion always occurs during self-motion. Technology applying coherent visual motion on stationary subjects creates visual-vestibular mismatch and allows investigation of system interplay in the MRI. In humans, the process minimizing the intersensory conflict was previously conceptualized as a categorical reciprocal upregulation of one (e.g., visual) and downregulation of the other system (e.g., vestibular), or vice versa

AM6527, a neutral CB1 receptor antagonist, suppresses opioid taking and seeking, as well as cocaine seeking in rodents without aversive effects.

Preclinical research has demonstrated the efficacy of CB1 receptor (CB1R) antagonists in reducing drug-taking behavior. However, clinical trials with rimonabant, a CB1R antagonist with inverse agonist profile, failed due to severe adverse effects, such as depression and suicidality. As a result, efforts have shifted towards developing novel neutral CB1R antagonists without an inverse agonist profile for treating substance use disorders. Here, we assessed AM6527, a CB1R neutral antagonist, in addiction animal models. Our findings revealed that AM6527 did not affect cocaine self-administration u

Sensorimotor Induction of Auditory Misattribution in Early Psychosis.

Dysfunction of sensorimotor predictive processing is thought to underlie abnormalities in self-monitoring producing passivity symptoms in psychosis. Experimentally induced sensorimotor conflict can produce a failure in bodily self-monitoring (presence hallucination [PH]), yet it is unclear how this is related to auditory self-monitoring and psychosis symptoms. Here we show that the induction of sensorimotor conflict in early psychosis patients induces PH and impacts auditory-verbal self-monitoring. Participants manipulated a haptic robotic system inducing a bodily sensorimotor conflict. In exp

TENG-Driven Electrotherapy: A Self-Powered Approach to Inducing Cancer Cell Apoptosis.

Most of the cancer-related deaths are caused by metastasis, which also remains a significant obstacle to successful clinical management. Even though several anti-metastatic treatments have been put forth, systemic toxicity, low cellular responsiveness, and drug resistance typically undermine their therapeutic efficacy. Although triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have become highly effective self-powered electrical therapies for biomedical applications, their potential as an active treatment tool for metastasis suppression has not yet been fully investigated. Here, we present a self-powered T

Transcranial electrical stimulation modulates emotional experience and metabolites in the prefrontal cortex in a donation task.

Understanding the neural, metabolic, and psychological mechanisms underlying human altruism and decision-making is a complex and important topic both for science and society. Here, we investigated whether transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) applied to two prefrontal cortex regions, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC, anode) and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC, cathode) can induce changes in self-reported emotions and to modulate local metabolite concentrations. We employed in vivo quantitative MR Spectroscopy in healthy adult participants and quantified change
