Mus musculus Barrier-To-Autointegration Factor 2 (Banf2) is Not Essential for Spermatogenesis or Fertility.

The barrier-to-autointegration factor (BAF) is widely expressed in most human tissues and plays a critical role in chromatin organization, nuclear envelope assembly, gonadal development, and embryonic stem cell self-renewal. Complete loss of BAF has been shown to lead to embryonic lethality and gonadal defects. The BAF paralog, namely, barrier-to-autointegration factor 2 (BANF2), exhibits a testis-predominant expression pattern in both humans and mice. Unlike BAF, it may cause isolated male infertility. Therefore, we used the CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate Banf2-knockout mice to further study

Evidence of hermaphroditism and sex ratio distortion in the fungal feeding nematode Bursaphelenchus okinawaensis.

Nematodes have many different reproductive strategies along with their divergent life histories; the ability of hermaphrodite to self- and cross-fertilize is useful for genetic manipulation. Here, we demonstrate the hermaphroditism of the fungal feeding nematode Bursaphelenchus okinawaensis, which was formerly described as a parthenogenetic nematode, and we show its other unique sexual characteristics. To determine that it is hermaphroditic, we performed the following experiments: observation of the pronuclear and chromosome behavior during oogenesis and early embryogenesis; observation of spe

Self-reported diagnoses of dietary allergens and fecundability in a North American cohort.

STUDY QUESTION: To what extent are self-reported diagnoses of food allergies associated with fecundability, the per-cycle probability of conception? SUMMARY ANSWER: Fecundability was not appreciably associated with self-reported food allergy diagnoses, number of food allergies, age at first diagnosis, or time since last allergic reaction. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Food allergies are atopic diseases that are characterized by an inappropriate immune response to a normally harmless dietary substance. While some studies have observed associations between atopic disorders and infertility, no study h

The inheritance of albinism in a freshwater snail, Physa heterostropha.

Complementation tests revealed that albinism in four laboratory strains of Physa (Physella) heterostropha pomilia resulted from two recessive, nonallelic genes. F2 dihybrid progeny displayed the 9:7 ratio classically associated with reciprocal recessive epistasis between unlinked loci. This offers a contrast to the situation in the better known planorbid snails and provides a valuable tool for the study of reproductive biology in these facultatively self-fertilizing hermaphrodites.

Subjective biology: how perceived fecundity influences relationship satisfaction and stability.

In high-income countries, fertility is increasingly postponed into ages when fecundity declines, elevating the risk of unmet reproductive goals. In this context, how individuals perceive their own and their partner's reproductive potential may carry important implications for well-being and relationship stability, long before clinical infertility is diagnosed. Drawing on 13 waves of longitudinal data from the German Family Panel (pairfam), this study uses individual fixed-effects models to examine how within-person changes in perceived fecundity - both one's own and one's partner's - are relat

Exploring the experience of IUD self-removal in the United States through posts on internet forums.

OBJECTIVE: Some intrauterine devices (IUD) users self-remove their IUDs, and these experiences are not well understood. This study examines what IUD users post in internet forums about their experience, as well as advice and questions shared among IUD users about self-removal. STUDY DESIGN: This study uses qualitative analysis of internet health and parenting forum postings about IUD self-removal identified from an internet search engine. We analyzed the data using inductive and deductive content analyses. RESULTS: Twenty-eight sites, containing 1742 posts by 1197 unique users, satisfied our

A CUG-initiated CATSPERθ functions in the CatSper channel assembly and serves as a checkpoint for flagellar trafficking.

Calcium signaling is critical for successful fertilization. In spermatozoa, calcium influx into the sperm flagella mediated by the sperm specific CatSper calcium channel is necessary for hyperactivated motility and male fertility. CatSper is a macromolecular complex and is repeatedly arranged in zigzag rows within four linear nanodomains along the sperm flagella. Here, we report that the Tmem249 -encoded transmembrane domain containing protein, CATSPERθ, is essential for the CatSper channel assembly during sperm tail formation. CATSPERθ facilitates the channel assembly by serving as a scaffold

Special collection on immune regulation and inflammatory mechanisms in reproductive health and disease.

ABSTRACT: Understanding how the immune system intersects with reproductive physiology is central to elucidating fertility mechanisms and the pathophysiology of reproductive disorders. Distinct immunological environments in both male and female reproductive organs are essential to maintain tissue integrity and function, support gametogenesis, enable fertilization, and sustain pregnancy while ensuring effective defence against pathogens. Disruptions in these complex regulatory networks may lead to chronic inflammation, infertility, and poor pregnancy outcomes. Recent breakthroughs have improved

Fertility treatments and the risk of preterm birth among women with subfertility: a linked-data retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In vitro fertilization (IVF) births contribute to a considerable proportion of preterm birth (PTB) each year. However, there is no formal surveillance of adverse perinatal outcomes for less invasive fertility treatments. The study objective was to describe associations between fertility treatment (in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, usually with ovulation drugs (IUI), or ovulation drugs alone) and preterm birth, compared to no treatment in subfertile women. METHODS: The Fertility Experiences Study (FES) is a retrospective cohort study conducted at the University of

Sedentary behavior, physical inactivity and body composition in relation to idiopathic infertility among men and women.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior have inconsistent effects on fertility. High body mass index is associated with infertility but to our knowledge, very few studies have explored body composition in association to fertility. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, body composition and idiopathic infertility in French men and women. DESIGN: We conducted a case-control multicentric observational study. 159 infertile (79 men and 80 women) and 143 fertile (72 men and 71 women) were recorded in four fertility centers. MAIN OUT

Pregnancy complications following fertility treatment-disentangling the role of multiple gestation.

BACKGROUND: To assess the extent to which multiple gestations mediate risk of pregnancy complications from fertility treatment and to address possible confounding by the underlying infertility. METHODS: From the nearly 1.8 million pregnancies recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Register between 1996 and 2013, we selected the 9.9% (N = 174 067) that occurred to couples with known trouble conceiving (clinical infertility). Fertility treatment was identified from self-reports, medical records and procedural information from fertility clinics. We used logistic regression to estimate odds ratios

Women with endometriosis have decreased health-related quality of life until late fertile age: a population-based cohort analysis at ages 31 and 46 years.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at fertile and late fertile age in women with history of endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER: Women with endometriosis have lower HRQoL until late fertile age and depression, infertility, pain, and poor general health seem to contribute to this impairment, whereas BMI, education, smoking, parity, current use of contraceptives, and contact to tertiary care have positive association with HRQoL in this population. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Women with endometriosis are known to have decreased HRQoL at fertile age, however, studies concern

The impact of lifestyle risk factors on female infertility.

BACKGROUND: Over 2 million couples in the United States are infertile. The literature reflects a number of potential lifestyle risks that have been associated with the development of this condition; however, few studies have investigated these risks concurrently. With knowledge of the importance of behavioral threats to fertility, women's health care providers will be in a better position to screen and assist women to modify their fertility risks. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were (1) to identify lifestyle factors associated with infertility in women by comparing a sample of infer
