Technology transfer of brain-computer interfaces as assistive technology: barriers and opportunities.

This paper provides an analysis of perspectives from different stakeholders on the state-of-the-art of BCI. Three barriers for technology transfer of BCIs as access technologies are identified. First, BCIs are developed with a narrow focus on creating a reliable technology, while a broader focus on creating a usable technology is needed. Second, the potential target group, which could benefit from BCIs as access technologies is expected to be very small. Development costs are therefore high, while reimbursements are expected to be low, which challenges the commercial viability. Third, potentia

Assistive technology and learning disabilities: today's realities and tomorrow's promises.

Many forms of technology, both "high" and "low," can help individuals with learning disabilities capitalize on their strengths and bypass, or compensate for, their disabilities. This article surveys the current status of assistive technology for this population and reflects on future promises and potential problems. In addition, a model is presented for conceptualizing assistive technology in terms of the types of barriers it helps persons with disabilities to surmount. Several current technologies are described and the research supporting their effectiveness reviewed: word processing, compute

The Importance of Technical Devices in the Self-care of Upper Limbs Amputees.

The National Institute of Medical Rehabilitation (NIMR) is engaged in the rehabilitation of posttraumatic patients, including also attending traumatic cases with amputated upper limbs. The lack of upper limbs is a great obstacle in essential functioning for the injured, and that is why we give high priority to planning, constructing and individually adopting appliances for aiding everyday life. Special literature gives distinguished attention to operative techniques and the possibilities of prosthetic devices, but no professional articles present any special devices needed for discharging ever

Financing assistive technology-Policy options on the path towards universal health coverage.

Supporting functional ability in everyday life is essential for advancing toward universal health coverage (UHC). However, of the estimated 2.5 billion people in need of assistive technology (AT) globally, the vast majority do not have access. The main reason for this is financial barriers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to identify financing policy options for increasing access to affordable AT. The UHC concept, more specifically the three coverage dimensions-population, interventions (products and services), and costs, is used to descriptively analyze gaps

Hands-free control of an assistive robotic arm for high-level paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in assistive robotic arms have enabled many people with tetraplegia to perform activities of daily living more independently. Because these systems typically require hand use, they are not a ready option for many individuals with high-level (C4 and above) tetraplegia. Such individuals, however, might be able to use signals that arise from the head and neck to control assistive devices. Therefore, the goal of the study was to evaluate the utility of several signals arising from the head and neck to control a robotic arm during 3D center-out reaching to multiple t

Research and Implementation of Travel Aids for Blind and Visually Impaired People.

Blind and visually impaired (BVI) people face significant challenges in perception, navigation, and safety during travel. Existing infrastructure (e.g., blind lanes) and traditional aids (e.g., walking sticks, basic audio feedback) provide limited flexibility and interactivity for complex environments. To solve this problem, we propose a real-time travel assistance system based on deep learning. The hardware comprises an NVIDIA Jetson Nano controller, an Intel D435i depth camera for environmental sensing, and SG90 servo motors for feedback. To address embedded device computational constraints,

Deaf-led alarm design: technology and disability in home, work and parenthood.

Domestic alarms are highly personal technological appendages that help us achieve an individual sense of safety and familial well-being-like baby monitors that help us care for children and alarm clocks that ensure a daily routine and help us get to work on time. Alarms can be understood as technologies that extend our eyes, ears, and memory to monitor our homes and ourselves in various ways beyond typical human capacity. The designs of domestic alarms tend to favour audible forms of alerting, and disabled users and inventors have hacked and redesigned alarms to fit their own families' needs.

Comparison of three tracking methods to assess usage of two pediatric powered mobility devices for young children with cerebral palsy.

Powered mobility devices are underutilized for promoting self-initiated mobility in young children with cerebral palsy due to prioritization of walking, caregiver effort, device characteristics, and environmental factors. Understanding device usage patterns is important to assess the impact of powered mobility interventions on child outcomes. As part of clinical trial (NCT04684576), three objective tracking methods including integrated loggers, Global Positioning System trackers (GPST), and caregiver reported activity logs (CRAL) were compared to provide insights into device usage patterns. A smart assistive system for visually challenged people through efficient object detection using deep learning with tunicate swarm algorithm.

Visual impairment is an inability to see something to a level that the eye is unable to see, even with usual means, such as glasses or lenses. Therefore, satisfying the everyday tasks of life becomes very hard for them. To help them, having more accurate and comprehensive object detection becomes essential. In this regard, one cares not only about categorizing images but also about accurately assessing the position and class of objects within the images, which is recognized as object detection. Robust object detection enables reliable DL-based recognition of specific objects in indoor and outd

Empowering Accessibility: Human-Centered Approach to a BCI Home Control for Impaired People.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have shown significant potential for individuals with motor impairments, either by improving physiotherapy treatments or by enabling to perform simple tasks, autonomously. However, much of this progress remains confined to controlled laboratory environments. This study aims to develop a BCI-controlled interface, for real-life scenario, tailored to allow individuals with Locked-In Syndrome (LIS) to interact with their home environment. To ensure system usability, a Human-Centered Design (HCD) approach was adopted prioritizing end-user needs. The interface contro
