Surfactant displacement by meconium free fatty acids: an alternative explanation for atelectasis in meconium aspiration syndrome.

Meconium, an ether extract of meconium, and the major free fatty acids of meconium (palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids) were all found to increase the surface tension minimum of dog lung extract in a Wilhelmy balance. Each of these fractions was instilled into the lungs of dogs (15 experimental, eight saline solution controls), and cardiac output, venous and arterial blood gases, pulmonary, atrial, and systemic pressures, airway pressure, and static lung compliance were serially monitored for 2 hours. Mean airway pressure increased and static lung compliance decreased significantly in all of t

Case report on complex jewelry foreign body ingestion in pediatric population: When watchful waiting prevails over intervention.

Foreign body ingestion (FBI) is a frequent pediatric emergency that often requires immediate, invasive endoscopic or surgical extraction when the object is large, multi-linked, or has sharp components. This case report highlights the safety and efficacy of an evidence-based watchful waiting protocol for a complex jewelry ingestion in an asymptomatic older child. An asymptomatic 8-year-old male presented to the emergency department 2 hours after accidentally swallowing a multi-linked metallic bracelet. Initial abdominal radiography 2 hours post-ingestion localized the radiopaque object to the p

Validation of a novel automated system, Fluispotter®, for serial sampling of dried blood spots.

Repeated blood sampling is required in certain clinical and research settings, which is currently performed by drawing blood from venous catheters requiring manual handling of each sample at the time of collection. A novel body-worn device for repeated serial samples, Fluispotter®, with automated extraction, collection, and storage of up to 20 venous dried blood spot samples over the course of 20 h may overcome problems with current methods for serial sampling. The purpose of this study was to assess the performance and safety of Fluispotter for the first time in healthy subjects. Fluispotter

Determination of 7 alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one level in plasma using isotope-dilution mass spectrometry and monitoring its circadian rhythm in human as an index of bile acid biosynthesis.

A highly sensitive and specific method has been developed for determination of the level of 7 alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one in plasma. This method is based on a stable isotope-dilution technique by gas chromatography-selected-ion monitoring mass spectrometry. 7 alpha-Hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one was extracted from plasma by saltingout extraction, and then purified by serial solid-phase extractions. The extract was treated with O-methylhydroxyl-amine hydrochloride and then dimethylethylsilylated. The resulting methyloxime-dimethylethylsilyl ether derivative was quantified by gas chromatography-s

Effects of retraction of anterior teeth and initial soft tissue variables on lip changes in Japanese adults.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of retraction of anterior teeth and the initial soft tissue profile variables on upper and lower lip changes in Japanese adults. Pre- and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs of 33 Japanese female adults (aged 23.0±5.0 years), with a Class II division 1 malocclusion, who had two or four first premolars extracted, were evaluated. Lateral cephalograms taken with the lips in a voluntary relaxed position were traced and compared. Nine linear and eight angular measurements were constructed for the hard tissue measurements and 16 linear and 2 angu

Skeletal Class lll severe openbite treatment using implant anchorage.

A female patient with a skeletal Class III severe anterior openbite was treated using miniplates as the anchorage. The patient was 15 years and 10 months of age when she reported to our university hospital with a chief complaint of anterior openbite and reversed occlusion. The patient had an anterior openbite with an overjet of -3.0 mm and overbite of -5.0 mm and a Class III molar relationship. The cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class III relationship (ANB 0 degrees ). After the extraction of the bilateral mandibular third molars, miniplates were placed in the mandibular external obl

Mini-implant anchorage for a skeletal class II malocclusion with missing mandibular incisors: a case report.

This case report describes the treatment of an adult female with a severe Class II malocclusion and congenitally missing mandibular incisors. It was decided to extract the maxillary first premolars and use mini-implants for en masse retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth. More than 13 mm of maxillary incisor retraction was obtained, with little change in the mandibular incisor inclination. The patient's facial esthetics showed dramatic improvement. The upper and lower lips were retracted by 6 mm and 7 mm, respectively. This helped reduce the mentalis strain and improve chin projection. In

Forestadent Young Specialist Prize (1999).

This paper describes the clinical orthodontic treatment of the three cases that were awarded the 1999 Forestadent Young Specialist Prize. There are two Class II division 1 cases treated by different treatment modalities and a Class II division 2 case complicated by a palatally ectopic maxillary canine. These case reports demonstrate the three main treatment modalities available to the orthodontist for treating skeletally-based malocclusions, i.e. growth modification, orthodontic camouflage, and a combined surgical-orthodontic approach.

Application of Smart Watch-Based Functional Evaluation for Upper Extremity Impairment: A Preliminary Study on Older Emirati Stroke Population.

Smartwatch-based functional assessments for upper extremity movement are a promising tool for a detailed and serial assessment during stroke rehabilitation, but their clinical application remains challenging. In this study, nine patients with hemiparesis due to a stroke participated in occupational therapy sessions using virtual reality-based rehabilitation devices. An Action Research Arm Test (ARAT) was performed at baseline and after intervention, with wrist smartwatch sensors recording motion data. We extracted acceleration and gyro sensor data from smartwatches and calculated the average m

Challenging TaqMan probe-based real-time PCR and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP): the two sensitive molecular techniques for the detection of toxoplasmosis, a potentially dangerous opportunistic infection in immunocompromised patients.

Due to defects and drawbacks of most conventional diagnostic methods including serology for the diagnosis of toxoplasmosis as a dangerous opportunistic infection in immunocompromised individuals, the accurate, rapid, and sensitive detection of infection in such patients is essential. In this study, the TaqMan probe-based real-time PCR and, a relatively new nucleic acid amplification method, the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique was compared based on the repetitive elements (RE) sequence to detect Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) DNA in blood samples of immunocompromised indi

Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Bacterial, and Anti-Fungal Activity of Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins and Extracts Obtained from Lignocellulosic Agricultural Waste.

It has now been proven that many pathogens that cause infections and inflammation gradually mutate and become resistant to antibiotics. Chemically synthesized drugs treating inflammation most often only affect symptoms, but side effects could lead to the failure of human organs' functionality. On the other hand, plant-derived natural compounds have a long-term healing effect. It was shown that sea buckthorn (SBT) twigs are a rich source of biologically active compounds, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (PACs). This study aimed to assess the anti-pathogenic and anti-inflammatory activity

Third molar angulation during and after treatment of adolescent orthodontic patients.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of premolar extraction therapy on third molar angulation during active treatment, and to test the significance of such changes on subsequent impaction of the third molars. Lateral cephalograms made before (T1) and after (T2) treatment and at long-term follow-up (T3) of 157 patients treated non-extraction (non-ex) or with extraction of four premolars (ex), all accurately diagnosed for impaction versus eruption of at least one third molar at T3, were evaluated. Linear regression models demonstrated that the maxillary third molars uprighted more

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis after topical application of herbal medicine.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis represents an aggressive form of deep neck space infection with a high mortality rate. The origin is generally odontogenic, in most cases, resulting from a dental abscess. A series of three cases developed after local application of herbal medicine in patients with no co-morbidities and with a history of a toothache in the lower quadrants for >2 weeks is presented. All patients were managed with antibiotics, extraction of offending tooth and serial wound debridement. Two patients recovered with a resultant skin defect on the neck and one died due to multiple orga
