Microindentation reveals softening of the equatorial and anterior sclera during early myopia development in tree shrew eyes.

Myopia has reached epidemic levels worldwide and significantly increases the risk for blinding diseases such as glaucoma, making it a pressing global health concern. Myopia is commonly associated with biomechanical weakening and remodeling of the sclera, resulting in an excessively elongated eye relative to its optical system. The exact regions of scleral remodeling and tissue softening remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to establish a microindentation testing approach for spatial mapping of scleral stiffness and localization of softened regions. Microindentation tests were performe

"TAM"ing of the shrew-challenges in the diagnosis of Neonatal leukemia with Down's syndrome -A case report with literature review.

The latest WHO (2017) classification describes the hematological abnormalities of Down's syndrome as a separate entity under 'Myeloid proliferations associated with Down's syndrome'. It includes Transient Abnormal Myelopoiesis and Myeloid leukemia of Down's syndrome. Here we report a case of a 3 days old neonate with Down's syndrome, presenting with a leukemic blood picture. The baby had icterus, fever and hepatosplenomagaly. Peripheral blood showed megakaryoblasts and giant platelets. A diagnosis of transient abnormal myelopoiesis was made by confirming with karyotyping and immunophenotyping.

Transcriptome Analysis of Choroid and Retina From Tree Shrew With Choroidal Neovascularization Reveals Key Signaling Moieties.

Pathological neovascularization in choroid, a leading cause of blindness, is a characteristic of many fundus diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. The present study aimed to elucidate the key signaling pathways in choroidal neovascularization (CNV) by analyzing the mRNA profiles of choroid and retina in tree shrews with CNV. We induced choroidal angiogenesis by laser photocoagulation in 15 tree shrews and obtained mRNA profiles of their choroids and retinas by high-throughput transcriptome sequencing. Hierarchical cluster analysis, weighted gene co-expres

Signal transduction pathways involved in dopamine D2 receptor-evoked emesis in the least shrew (Cryptotis parva).

With its five receptor subtypes (D1-5), dopamine is implicated in a myriad of neurological illnesses. Dopamine D2 receptor-based agonist therapy evokes nausea and vomiting. The signaling mechanisms by which dopamine D2 receptors evoke vomiting remains unknown. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinases (PI3K)- and protein kinase C (PKC)-related signaling cascades stimulate vomiting post-injection of various emetogens in emetically competent animals. This study investigated potential mechanisms involved in dopamine D2 receptor-mediated vomiting using least shrews. We found that vomiting evoked by the selec

Avian H5N1 influenza virus infection causes severe pneumonia in the Northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

Avian-origin influenza viruses like H5N1 and H7N9 often cause severe symptoms with high mortality in humans. Animal models are useful for clarification of the mechanisms of pathogenicity of these infections. In this study, to expand the potential utility of the Northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) for influenza virus infection, we assessed the pathogenicity of H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza viruses in tupaia. Infectious virus was detected continuously from nasal, oral, tracheal, and conjunctival swab samples in the animals infected with these viruses. H5N1 influenza virus infection of tupaia

Mathevolepis alpina sp. n. (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) from an alpine shrew: the first record of the genus in Europe.

Mathevolepis alpina sp. n. is described from an alpine shrew, Sorex alpinus, from the Carpathian Region of the Slovak Republic. The new species differs from other species of the genus by the morphology of the male copulatory apparatus, especially the cirrus, which is characterised by asymmetrical parabasal swelling. The new species represents the first record of cestodes of the genus Mathevolepis Spassky, 1948 in Europe, i.e. the western part of the Palaearctic Region. The geographical distribution of species of Mathevolepis is reviewed.

Identification of ghrelin in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus): cDNA cloning, peptide purification and tissue distribution.

Ghrelin is the endogenous ligand for the growth hormone (GH) secretagogue receptor, and the sequence of ghrelin has been determined in many species from fish to mammals. In the present study, to reveal the production of ghrelin in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus, order: Insectivora, suncus is used as a laboratory name), we determined the cDNA sequence and structure of suncus ghrelin and also demonstrated the ghrelin-producing cells in the gastrointestinal tract. Results of cDNA cloning and mass spectrometry analysis revealed that suncus ghrelin is composed of 18 or 26 amino acid residues

A re-evaluation of the neurotransmitter basis of chemotherapy-induced immediate and delayed vomiting: evidence from the least shrew.

Although the neurotransmitter basis of chemotherapy-induced vomiting (CIV) is thought to be multifactorial, it is generally accepted that acute (immediate) CIV is mainly due to the release of serotonin (5-HT) within the gastrointestinal tract, while the delayed phase occurs following substance P (SP) release in the brainstem. The aim of the current study was to test this dogma in the least shrew model of vomiting. Thus, we initially investigated the temporal development of cisplatin's immediate and delayed emetic effects in the least shrew and subsequently determined the concomitant changes in

Numerical variation of teeth in the wild house musk shrew Suncus murinus captured from Nagasaki, Japan.

Wild populations of Suncus murinus from Nagasaki were thought to be extinct, although specimens from Nagasaki are kept at the National Science Museum, Tokyo. Variation in the number of teeth, including both congenital and postnatal absence, was observed in 25 of 85 individuals. All 25 abnormal individuals were checked using a micro-CT unit to document the presence or absence of embedded teeth and any traits of postnatal absence. Four of these had congenitally absent teeth, whereas the rest showed signs of postnatal absence. There was no significant difference in the ratio of length of tooth gr

Differential activity of drugs to induce emesis and pica behavior in Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) and rats.

We have previously reported that emetic stimuli induce kaolin ingestion behavior (pica behavior) in rats and mice (i.e., species that do not have the emetic reflex) and that the behavior may be analogous to gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea and emesis. We hypothesized that pica behavior may also occur in species capable of vomiting and that it may serve as an additional index of discomfort relevant to antiemetic drug development. The present experiments were conduced using Suncus murinus and rats and kaolin consumption was measured at 24 h after the administration of nicotine (1.25-5

Unusual ampullary sperm crypts, and behavior and role of the cumulus oophorus, in the oviduct of the least shrew, Cryptotis parva.

The gametes of the least shrew, Cryptotis parva, were studied in regard to their maturation and structure, and with particular emphasis on their behavior in the fallopian tube, from the time of ovulation until the appearance of two-cell embryos beginning some 9 h after ovulation. Cryptotis spermatozoa are organized according to the conventional eutherian mold, with the exception of a barbed perforatorium and an unusual plasma membrane density lent by a bristly coat where it overlies the acrosome rim. In the epididymis they undergo a maturation of the capacity for motility and an -S-S-related s

Magnificent expression of asialo GM1 on thymus cells and spleen T cells of the musk shrew, Suncus murinus.

The expression of asialo GM1 (GA1) was observed on almost all thymocytes from young musk shrew, at the age of 4 weeks by flow cytometric analysis. In adult shrew aged 10 months, the ratio of GA1-negative thymocytes was increased. Among several anti-glycolipid antibodies used, anti-GM1 and anti-Forssman also reacted with the thymocytes. Protein fraction of the thymocytes was analyzed by SDS-PAGE followed by immunoblotting. Anti-GA1 and anti-GM1 showed two bands and one band, respectively, however, their mobilities were different from each other. Anti-Forssman did not stain any protein. The GA1-

Characterization of prostaglandin E2 binding to uterine membranes from baboon, rabbit and tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

Membrane preparations (100,000 g pellet) of rabbit, baboon and tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) uteri were studied for binding of [3H]prostaglandin E2 ([3H]PGE2). Unbound [3H]PGE2 was separated by filtration through Whatman GF/F filters. Non-specific binding was determined by the amount of radioactivity associated with the filters in the presence of a 100-fold excess of radioinert PGE2. PGE2 bound to membranes could be displaced by some other prostaglandin (PG) molecules: PGE1, 16,16-dimethyl-PGE2, PGA1 and PGF2 alpha, but not by 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, PGD2 or arachidonic acid. No PGE2 binding was de

Synergistic disruption of the blood-brain barrier in tree shrews by Methamphetamine and HIV-1 Tat via TRPM2-Mediated astrocyte inflammation.

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse and HIV infection have emerged as two major public health concerns worldwide. Both METH and the HIV-1 Tat protein (Tat) can enter central nervous system through blood-brain barrier (BBB) and exert neurotoxic effects. However, the specific mechanism underlying their synergistic disruption of BBB remains unclear. Herein, co-culture models of endothelial cells and astrocytes and tree shrews were used to explore the role and mechanism of the Transient receptor potential M2 (TRPM2) in mediating the synergistic BBB damage induced by METH and Tat. In the tree shrew experi

Pathological Characteristics of Pregnant Tree Shrews Infected by Zoonotic Hepatitis E Virus Genotype and the Effect of Estrogen on Virus Replication.

Hepatitis E, caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV), is a zoonotic disease that extends beyond hepatocellular necrosis to replicate in multiple organs. While most infections are self-limiting, HEV infection during pregnancy is associated with severe outcomes, including acute liver failure, preterm delivery, and miscarriage, with the mechanisms underlying this high pathogenicity remaining poorly understood. This study established a pregnant tree shrew model with a late-stage HEV infection and a cellular model using zoonotic HEV genotypes GT3 and GT4 to investigate the effects of estrogen on HEV
