Functional MRI (fMRI) studies of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) have begun to reveal abnormalities in large-scale memory and cognitive brain networks. Since the medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory system is a site of very early pathology in AD, a number of studies have focused on this region of the brain. Yet it is clear that other regions of the large-scale episodic memory network are affected early in the disease as well, and fMRI has begun to illuminate functional abnormalities in frontal, temporal, and parietal cortices as well in MCI and AD. Besides predictable

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (US) can be used to detect emboli in the cerebral circulation. We have implemented and evaluated the first online wavelet-based automatic embolic signal-detection system, based on a fast discrete wavelet transform algorithm using the Daubechies 8th order wavelet. It was evaluated using a group of middle cerebral artery recordings from 10 carotid stenosis patients, and a 1-h compilation tape from patients with particularly small embolic signals, and compared with the most sensitive commercially available software package (FS-1), which is based on a frequency-filt

The purpose of this study was to explore progress, in the adaptation to community screening for blinding eye disease, of digital imaging devices and technology for storage and transmission. Available imaging systems were compared to gold standard clinical photography in terms of sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of common blinding eye conditions. Since the use of expensive non-portable imaging devices is likely to be limited for widespread community screening purposes, a portable fundus camera (Nidek, Chiyoda-ku, Japan) and a prototype monocular digital indirect ophthalmoscope construc

A framework for inpainting missing parts of a video sequence recorded with a moving or stationary camera is presented in this work. The region to be inpainted is general: it may be still or moving, in the background or in the foreground, it may occlude one object and be occluded by some other object. The algorithm consists of a simple preprocessing stage and two steps of video inpainting. In the preprocessing stage, we roughly segment each frame into foreground and background. We use this segmentation to build three image mosaics that help to produce time consistent results and also improve th

PURPOSE: To demonstrate that contrast-enhanced MRI (ceMRI) with the aid of Gd(ABE-DTTA) is able to detect ischemic events in the heart in a canine ischemia/reperfusion (30/40 minutes) model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: ECG-gated, T1-weighted MR image sets (four to five slices each) with three-minute time resolution were collected in transiently LAD-occluded dogs. Following the acquisition of control image sets, ischemia was started by occluding the LAD. Either Gd(ABE-DTTA) (N = 6) or Gd(DTPA) (N = 6) was injected, and imaging was continued for 30 minutes of ischemia and 40 minutes of reperfusion.

Objective. This study developed a multitask learning (MTL)-based denoising model to reconstruct phonocardiogram (PCG) signals while preserving heart murmur characteristics under both synthetic and diverse real-world clinical noise.Approach.The model was trained to jointly denoise PCG data and classify valvular heart disease (VHD). The original PCG dataset comprised recordings lasting up to 3 s, including normal heart sounds and four VHD classes, with 200 samples per class. To construct inputs, we synthesized contaminated PCGs by mixing synthetic and real-world clinical noise sources and convert

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) often present reduced vocal loudness, which may impact the intelligibility of their speech especially in noisy environments. To address this issue, we developed an assistive speech-to-noise ratio feedback (SNF) system that estimates the user's speech signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in real-time and activates an audible alarm if the SNR falls below a predefined threshold. The proposed SNF system is comprised of a pair of over-the-ear binaural microphones for audio data acquisition, and a mobile application (app) that implements the key algorithms for coherence-b

OBJECTIVE: Most algorithms for automated analysis of phonocardiograms (PCG) require segmentation of the signal into the characteristic heart sounds. The aim was to assess the feasibility for accurate classification of heart sounds on short, unsegmented recordings.
APPROACH: PCG segments of 5 s duration from the PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge database were analysed. Initially the 5 s segment at the start of each recording (seg 1) was analysed. Segments were zero-mean but otherwise had no pre-processing or segmentation. Normalised spectral amplitude was determined by fast Fourier t

Auscultation of the heart is accompanied by both electrical activity and sound. Heart auscultation provides clues to diagnose many cardiac abnormalities. Unfortunately, detection of relevant symptoms and diagnosis based on heart sound through a stethoscope is difficult. The reason GPs find this difficult is that the heart sounds are of short duration and separated from one another by less than 30 ms. In addition, the cost of false positives constitutes wasted time and emotional anxiety for both patient and GP. Many heart diseases cause changes in heart sound, waveform, and additional murmurs b

Smart wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring enables continuous cardiac assessment beyond clinical settings, but ECG signals are often degraded by baseline wander, muscle artifacts, and electrode motion artifacts. At present, pure end-to-end spiking neural networks (SNNs), with the advantage of low computational complexity, have rarely been explored for ECG noise suppression, particularly under dynamic conditions. To address this gap, this study proposes Direct-Coding-Physics-Aware Spiking Neural Network (DCPA-SNN) for wearable ECG denoising. The proposed method integrates a direct-coding

BACKGROUND: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are crucial for brain-computer interface research but are highly susceptible to noise contamination, necessitating effective denoising. While deep learning has been widely applied, its "black-box" nature limits interpretability. In contrast, traditional model-based methods like Low-Rank Recovery (LRR) offer strong interpretability by decomposing signals into low-rank and sparse components.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to develop an interpretable deep-learning model for EEG denoising that combines the performance of deep learning with the interpreta

In recent years, the utilization of motor imagery (MI) signals derived from electroencephalography (EEG) has shown promising applications in controlling various devices such as wheelchairs, assistive technologies, and driverless vehicles. However, decoding EEG signals poses significant challenges due to their complexity, dynamic nature, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Traditional EEG pattern recognition algorithms typically involve two key steps: feature extraction and feature classification, both crucial for accurate operation. In this work, we propose a novel method that addresses these

Aiming at the problem that the weak features of non-stationary vibration signals are difficult to extract under strong background noise, a multi-layer noise reduction method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is proposed. First, the original vibration signal is decomposed by EEMD, and the main intrinsic modal components (IMF) are selected using comprehensive evaluation indicators; the second layer of filtering uses wavelet threshold denoising (WTD) to process the main IMF components. Finally, the virtual noise channel is introduced, and FastICA is used to de-noise and unmix

OBJECTIVE: Gastric slow wave abnormalities have been associated with gastric motility disorders. Invasive studies in humans have described normal and abnormal propagation of the slow wave. This study aims to disambiguate the abnormally functioning wave from one of normalcy using multi-electrode abdominal waveforms of the electrogastrogram (EGG).
METHODS: Human stomach and abdominal models are extracted from computed tomography scans. Normal and abnormal slow waves are simulated along stomach surfaces. Current dipoles at the stomachs surface are propagated to virtual electrodes on the abdomen

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a low-cost, skin-safe strain-sensing patch and real-time-capable algorithm for early detection of intravenous (IV) infiltration during continuous monitoring.
METHODS: A custom strain sensor composed of discrete piezoresistive elements was encased between two transparent medical dressings and mounted adjacent to the IV site. Data were collected during controlled IV infiltrations in juvenile pigs and during inpatient monitoring in pediatric patients without infiltrations. A strictly causal, event-based detection algorithm was implemented using features derived

Emotion recognition from EEG signals has become a central task in affective computing, offering non-invasive insight into human emotional states. Due to the nonlinear and nonstationary nature of EEG, entropy-based features have gained prominence as reliable indicators of brain complexity. However, traditional entropy metrics-such as Shannon entropy (ShanEn) and its variants-often lack sensitivity to transient dynamics and multiscale irregularities in the brain's electrical activity. This study introduces a novel application of Entropy of Entropy (EoE) to EEG phase series (EoE - phase), aiming

Objective.Atrial fibrillation (AF) burden has become an increasingly important endpoint in long-duration rhythm monitoring, but reliable burden estimation requires more than accurate AF detection alone. In particular, when burden is derived by aggregating predicted AF probabilities over time, probability calibration may directly affect burden validity under external dataset shift.Approach.This study developed an interpretable-interval feature model for AF detection and evaluated it using record-wise cross-validation on a development cohort and independent cross-dataset external validation on p

Near-infrared (NIR) video-based remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) enables physiological measurement under low-light conditions using monochrome facial videos. NIR videos lack chrominance-based cues, while weak cardiac variations remain entangled with motion, illumination, and imaging noise. To address these limitations, we propose a wavelet-based spectral feature gating (WSFG) module for NIR-based rPPG estimation. The WSFG module applies a two-level stationary wavelet transform (SWT) to decompose intermediate temporal features without temporal downsampling. Specifically, learnable spectral ga
