Annales de la Societe belge de medecine tropicale1990fre
In view of the risks of onchocerciasis facing Chadian refugees who have settled in a camp in a savanna hyperendemic area of northern Cameroon, the authors concluded that a vector control directed against the black fly larvae located on small seasonal tributaries of the main water course of this area should be carried out during the four to five months of the rainy season, i.e., during the whole period of transmission of this disease. The operations were undertaken during two consecutive rainy seasons. The first year consisted in developing ground-based control techniques and evaluating the lar

The Beffa form of Simulium soubrense Vajime & Dunbar, a member of the S. sanctipauli sub-complex of the S. damnosum complex, was found breeding throughout rivers in the Togo-Benin Gap, as far north as 9 degrees 30'N. Its distribution changed with the season. In southern Togo there were seasonal fluctuations in the relative abundancies of the Beffa form and of S. damnosum/S.sirbanum. There was considerable temporal and regional variation in the frequencies of different colour morphs of adult flies. The flies in Benin tended to be darker. Infections with Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) appeared t

The transmission of bovine Onchocerca spp. in Britain was investigated by studying the Ceratopogonidae and Simuliidae which attacked bait cattle between April and October at two sites in North Wales, where either Onchocerca lienalis and O. gutturosa (Cynwyd), or O. lienalis alone (Pentrefoelas) occurred. Based on the relative abundance of each species, their seasonal variation in abundance and preferential feeding sites on cattle, the presence of Onchocerca sp. infective larvae and the development of patent infections in bait cattle, vectors were identified as Simulium ornatum s.1. at Pentrefo

Sexual differences in pathogen prevalence in wildlife often arise from varying susceptibility influenced by factors such as sex hormones and exposure to pathogens. In the case of vector-borne pathogens, host selection by insect vectors determines the exposure of hosts to infections, largely affecting the transmission of these infectious diseases. We identify the blood-feeding patterns of insect vectors in Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) nestlings in a 3-year study. Blood from both nestlings and insect vectors (Culicoides spp. and Simuliidae) captured inside nest-boxes were used to molecularly d

Onchocerciasis is a parasitic infection caused by the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus and is transmitted through the bites of blackflies of the genus Simulium that breed in rivers and streams. The current WHO definition of transmission zones is limited, leaving country programmes to address challenges such as delineating transmission zones correctly, addressing blackfly migration, managing parasite and host movement and handling cross-border transmission issues. A more data-driven approach to the practical definition of transmission zones in African countries would be advantageous. A rev

This study aim was to investigate the influence of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) on pathogenic bacteria (PB) survival in the chicken manure (CM), pig manure (PM), cow manure (COM) and sewage sludge (SS) compost. Three kinds of manure [chicken (T2), pig (T4) and cow (T6)] and SS (T8) were inoculated with BSFL (1.2:7 ratio on fresh weight basis) and without BSFL (T1, T3, T5 and T7) was used as control and experiment lasted for 9 days. The results indicated that BSFL amendment 90-93% of PB abundances (RAs) was significantly mitigate in CM and COM (T

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis is caused by a nematode worm Onchocerca volvulus, which is transmitted in Sudan by black fly vectors of the Simulium damnosum sensu lato species complex. In Sudan, the disease is found in four foci where fast flowing rivers provide suitable breeding sites for the Simulium vector flies. The construction of dams and irrigation schemes for agricultural purposes has affected black fly breeding and distribution, such as in Merowe Dam in Abu-Hamed focus, where the perennially flowing water downstream of the Dam created new vector breeding sites, thereby, changing the patte

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Onchocerciasis is endemic in some parts of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This study describes the entomological parameters of transmission in three rural communities of Akwa Ibom State, prior to ivermectin intervention in 2004.
METHODS: Blackflies were caught using human bait and 90% of the flies were dissected for parity. All parous flies were further dissected for the presence of filaria larvae. Monthly and annual biting rate, and transmission potential were calculated using standard methods.
RESULTS: A total of 4296 adult Simulium damnosum were caught on human bait, 4

Most parasites have complex life cycles; and mathematical models can help in targeting interventions and predicting disease-control efforts. For actual applications, quantification and validation of models is a key issue. We illustrate the process of validation by presenting a (re)analysis of fly-feeding experiments carried out by the Onchocerciasis (river blindness) Control Programme (OCP/WHO) in West Africa, with the objective to validate ONCHOSIM, an onchocerciasis transmission model. In these experiments flies were fed on human patients and dissected to count the number of microfilariae th

Blackflies are reappearing in areas of West Africa where they used to be controlled with insecticides because they were vectors of the parasite Onchocerca volvulus. Even though they no longer transmit onchocerciasis in these areas they can hinder optimal land use through their biting behaviour. The authors discuss the problems associated with resuming the use of insecticides to control the blackfly and recommend that ground treatment be restricted to areas where it is likely to be effective on a continuing basis. In communities lacking technical and financial resources the only alternative con

As part of the return of savanna migrants installed since a long time in forest regions, in the south of Sierra Leone, we carried out an experimental study about a cross-transmission between Simulium sirbanum from Missira (West-Mali) and the forest strain of Onchocerca volvulus in the south-west of Sierra Leone. This study will allow to know if there is a risk of onchocerciasis transmission recrudescence in relation to the reinstallation of these migrants in their native region. Because of the very high limitation to the forest strain of O. volvulus microfilariae output of the peritrophic memb

Potamonautes loveni (Colosi) is the valid name for the species also described as P. granviki, P. harvardi and P. loveni longimerus, and incorrectly identified as P. berardi berardi. Potamonautes jeanelli and P. idjwiensis may be allied to P. loveni, but are geographically separated and show sufficient morphological distinction not to be considered conspecific. Potamonautes loveni occurs in the upper reaches of rivers on the highlands of western Kenya and eastern Uganda. Its replacement by other species, principally P. niloticus, at lower altitudes is probably determined by the temperature rang

This work collates previous and recent cytotaxonomically defined segregates of the Simulium damnosum complex from western and eastern Africa. Standard cytotaxonomic procedures were used on new samples from Nigeria, Cameroon and Malawi. The main onchocerciasis vectors comprising cytotypes, cytoforms and cytospecies are highlighted and indications of host preferences are given. Thyolo form, the vector implicated in the Thyolo Highlands of Malawi, is reported for the first time. Also reported are new foci of two genetically distinct savanna taxa: Volta form and S. damnosum s.s.. The associations

The general characteristics of Onchocerca volvulus infection and its transmission are outlined in this overview of human onchocerciasis. The pathogenic role of the microfilariae, producing lesions of the skin, lymphatic system, eye and deep organs, are described, along with the main clinical manifestations of the disease. The global prevalence and distribution of onchocerciasis are given. Best estimates in 1985 gave 86 million persons at risk, 17.8 million infected, 336,400 blind and a like number suffering from severe visual impairment. The vast majority was in Africa. The impact of onchocerc

The impact of mass treatment with ivermectin on the intensity of Onchocerca volvulus transmission by the black fly (Simulium yahense) was evaluated on the Liberian Agricultural Company rubber plantation in Liberia, West Africa. The adult pre-treatment prevalence of onchocerciasis was greater than 80%, and the average intensity of infection was 5.35 mf/mg of skin. The drug was administered at 2 annual intervals, reaching 58-60% of the approximately 14,000 people living in 73 camps. Landing/biting catches of black flies made in central and peripheral plantation zones indicated similar fly activi

Infective larvae from the savanna strain of Onchocerca volvulus are significantly longer (662.6 +/- 66.8 microns; n = 99) than those from the forest strain (624.2 +/- 62.0 microns; n = 236). The length of the infective larvae is not influenced by the size, species or age post infectionem (pi) of the Simulium damnosum s. l. vectors nor by their localization in the fly's head, thorax or abdomen, the worm load per fly or the thoracic volume per larva. However, the lengths of infective larvae within one individual fly have a conspiciously low variance.

Chadian refugees, most of whom are free from onchocerciasis, settled recently in a camp in a savanna area of the northern Cameroon where the prevalence is about 80% and the blindness rate is 4% of the adult population. In view of the risks of onchocerciasis facing the immigrants, the authors carried out an entomological survey in this region aimed at determining the modes of transmission and assessing the possibilities for the control of this disease. After a three-month survey in the study area, it appears clearly that 1) transmission takes place only during the rainy season, 2) the main vect
