Role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of abdominal hydatid disease.

Experience with the use of ultrasound for investigating hydatid disease of the abdomen is reported. The presence of daughter cysts within the parent cyst gives a pathognomonic sonographic picture, whether the cyst is single or multiple. The presence of single cysts without daughter cysts is still a diagnostic problem, unless calcification is seen. Associated secondary infection changes the picture to one of a nonspecific abscess, and only the presence of additional cysts can give a clue about the etiology.

Agreement between parent and child report of quality of life in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is little information in the research literature of agreement between parent and child in reports of child quality of life (QOL) for a sample of children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of our study was to determine whether parent and child concordance is greater for physical domains of QOL than for psychosocial domains; whether parents rate their child's QOL better or poorer than their child's ratings; and whether concordance is related to demographic, socioeconomic or clinical factors. METHODS: The study was a questionnaire survey of

[The Relationship between Social and Family Structures and Behavioral Problems in Preschool Children].

BACKGROUND: Behavioral problems in children are indicators of compromised mental health. Their development is influenced by family and social factors, with limited understanding of interactions among family structure, educational status, migration background, and parental employment concerning behavioral problems. These associations were investigated in children between 5-6 years of age. METHODS: Data (n=15,271) were collected between 09/2018 and 08/2019 in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein as part of school entry examinations. Children's behavioral problems were assessed using the Stre

[Exploring the association between SPRY gene family and non-syndromic oral clefts among Chinese populations using data of a next-generation sequencing study].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between SPRY gene family and the risk of non-syndromic oral clefts among Chinese populations, in respect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) association and parent-of-origin effects. METHODS: Based on case-parent design, this study used the data of SPRY gene family in a next generation sequencing study of 183 non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) case-parent trios (549 participants) recruited from 2016 to 2018, to analyze the effects of SNP association and parent-of-origin. The sequencing study adopted a two-stage design. In

Socioeconomical Factors Associated With Pediculosis (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae) in Athens, Greece.

Pediculosis in humans and especially in children is a very common dermatological disorder caused by the ectoparasite Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer. We investigated the socioeconomic factors affecting the prevalence of pediculosis in the Greek urban area of Athens during 2004-2006. The target population consisted of children from kindergartens. In total, 434 children from single- or two-parent families were investigated with respect to socioeconomic factors such as education, income and family composition, and the prevalence of pediculosis. The overall pediculosis rate was 5.30%. Head louse

Social skills and problem behaviours in school aged children with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Disorder.

The social skills and problem behaviours of children with high-functioning autism and Asperger's Disorder were compared using parent and teacher reports on the Social Skills Rating System. The participants were 20 children with high-functioning autism, 19 children with Asperger's Disorder, and 17 typically developing children, matched on chronological and overall mental age. The children with autism and Asperger's Disorder were not differentiated on any social skill or problem behaviour based either on teacher or parent report. However, both clinical groups demonstrated significant social skil

To evaluate the EASE intervention for reducing anxiety and depression among adolescents in Pakistan: a protocol for a mixed methods study, including a cluster-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The rising prevalence of adolescent anxiety and depression in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) highlights the urgency for effective interventions. Challenges with standard treatments necessitate exploring accessible strategies. In addition, adapting interventions from high-income countries to LMICs raises concerns about efficiency. The LMIC-tailored Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) intervention, integrating cognitive-behavioural principles, group sessions, non-specialist delivery and parental involvement, provides a promising solution. This protocol aims to eva

Joint physical custody, turning to parents for emotional support, and subjective health: A study of adolescents in Stockholm, Sweden.

AIMS: Among children with separated parents, the arrangement of joint physical custody, i.e. children living equally much in both parents' homes, has increased substantially during the last decades in Sweden. To date, empirical research on the living conditions of this group is limited. This study analyses family type differences in turning to parents for emotional support and in subjective health among adolescents. The focus of the study is adolescents in joint physical custody, who are compared with those living with two original parents in the same household; those living (only) in a single

DNA fingerprinting of single colonies of Helicobacter pylori from gastric cancer patients suggests infection with a single predominant strain.

In each of six gastric cancer patients, repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR DNA fingerprints of 18 single colonies of Helicobacter pylori from the gastric antrum, corpus, and cardia were identical and matched that of the parental isolate. In three additional gastric cancer patients, 17 of 18 single-colony DNA fingerprints were identical to each other and to the DNA fingerprint of the corresponding parental isolate.

Employment change and the role of the medical home for married and single-mother families with children with special health care needs.

One in five U.S. households with children has at least one child with a special health care need (USDHHS, 2004). Like most parents, those with children with special health care needs struggle to balance child-rearing responsibilities with employment demands. This research examines factors affecting married parents' and single-mother's employment change decisions focusing specifically on whether having a medical home influences these decisions. This study includes 38,569 children with special health care needs from birth through age 17 surveyed in the 2005-2006 National Survey of Children with

Helping financially under-resourced unmarried mothers move forward and flourish: Feasibility findings from an innovative coaching-centered place-based initiative.

Longer-duration, holistic, cohort-based, coach-led interventions may be particularly effective in promoting both economic health and emotional well-being among unmarried mothers living in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Aligning with the 1999 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) framework for program evaluation, this study presents a non-random pragmatic feasibility trial of Moms Moving Forward (MMF), a 12-month, community-centered, place-based initiative. MMF aims to improve financial stability and maternal mental health by building life skills and strengthening participants' sense of

Better together? A randomized controlled microtrial comparing different levels of therapist and parental involvement in exposure-based treatment of childhood specific phobia.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure is often limited to homework assignments in routine clinical care. The current study compares minimally-guided (MGE) and parent-guided (PGE) out-session homework formats to the 'golden standard' of therapist-guided in-session exposure with minimally-guided exposure at home (TGE). METHODS: Children with specific phobia (N = 55, age 8-12, 56% girls) participated in a single-blind, randomized controlled microtrial with a four-week baseline-treatment period design. Clinical interviews, behavioral avoidance tests, and self-report measures were assessed at pre-treatment, post
