Blow-out fractures usually involve the orbit in the floor or in the medial wall. Anyway, if the roof of the orbit is thin and direct compressive or buckling forces impact the orbit the fracture can involve the upper roof. We describe the case of a blow-out fracture of the orbital roof with enophtalmus and cerebrospinal fluid leak from lacero-contusive subciliar wound

The following case describes a head injury in an older male patient in which a large wooden foreign body, forming a subcutaneous tract in the scalp, was mistaken for a depressed skull fracture on initial clinical assessment. This foreign body was not visualised on CT brain imaging until specialised views were used retrospectively, after surgical exploration of the scalp laceration. Appropriate radiological techniques for the detection of radiolucent foreign bodies are discussed.

BACKGROUND: An uncommon complication of fractures of the skull is a growing skull fracture (GSF), which is usually seen in children less than 3 years of age. A posttraumatic GSF presenting in adolescents and adults is uncommon and may cause significant management problems.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old male presented with a progressively increasing scalp swelling following trauma in infancy. The diagnosis and treatment was delayed until the swelling had enlarged to enormous size with ventriculomegaly and development of seizures. The patient was managed with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

BACKGROUND: We present a rare case of recurrent bacterial meningitis caused by an occult basilar skull fracture.
METHODS: A 9-year-old boy presented with acute headache, fever and vomiting. He had recurrent meningitis episode one month earlier and a head trauma 6 months ago. Laboratory findings and lumbar puncture suggested an intracranial bacterial infection. Computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and nasal endoscopy failed to find the presence of rhinorrhea. Spiral computed tomography was performed and a three-dimensional reconstruction of the bony cranium was done.
RESULTS: A

This report describes a pediatric case of delayed glossopharyngeal nerve, vagus nerve, and facial nerve palsies after a head injury. Computed tomography scan of the skull base revealed the fracture of the petrous part of the temporal bone, and the fracture involved the tip of petrous pyramid, in front of the jugular foramen. The anatomical features, mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Growing Skull Fractures (GSF) are rare complications of head trauma, primarily reported in infancy and early childhood. GSF are commonly located on calvaria, and rarely in other locations, including the skull base.
METHOD: In this study, we report two cases of GSF occurring in unusual locations. The first, a 8-month old girl, with a GSF of the suboccipital posterior fossa region, and the second, a 4-year old boy with a GSF of the right orbital roof. Both cases underwent operative treatment of the GSF, with microsurgical dissection and excision of the protruding gliotic brain tissu

An adolescent presented with an intradiploic meningocoele 11 years after an occipital skull fracture. Surgical treatment consisted initially of cranioplasty, but the lesion then progressed to involve much of the skull base, requiring cystoperitoneal shunt insertion. The pathogenesis and treatment of post-traumatic intradiploic meningocoele is discussed.

Growing skull fractures are reported in three infants undergoing cranial vault surgery for craniosynostosis. Although primary dural injury was overt in only one patient, an extensive dural defect with spatially coincident bony absence was identified in all patients at late exploration. The coincidence of dural injury, deficient overlying bone, and a pulsatile growing brain are necessary conditions for the development of growing skull fractures. With the advent of increasingly radical cranial vault procedures during infancy, the potential for this complication to arise may increase. Definitive

This study aims to evaluate an AI model designed to automatically classify skull fractures and visualize segmentation on emergent CT scans. The model's goal is to boost diagnostic accuracy, alleviate radiologists' workload, and hasten diagnosis, thereby enhancing patient outcomes. Unique to this research, both pediatric and post-operative patients were not excluded, and diagnostic durations were analyzed. Our testing dataset for the observer studies involved 671 patients, with a mean age of 58.88 years and fairly balanced gender representation. Model 1 of our AI algorithm, trained with 1499 fr

Objective The clinical signs of base of skull fracture (BSF) are often ambiguous and difficult to identify, but are often used to make decisions on early medical interventions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of the clinical signs of BSF, their dependency to diagnose this injury and to assess the correlation between the presence of these clinical signs and the severity of head injury and patient outcome. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in South India over a period of 3 years (2020-2023). Patients older than 18 years, with radi

Elevation of depressed skull fractures in pediatric patients is indicated when the depression extends below the level of the inner table. Although open surgical reduction is an option for treatment, closed vacuum-assisted elevation has been found to have a high success rate and low complication rates when employed in children less than 6 months of age without disruption of the cortex. In this article, we describe two recent cases from our institution and summarize the reported cases in the literature including information about fracture specifics, device used, technical approach, and success r

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Growing skull fracture is one the rarest complication of skull fracture. They are identified mostly in infancy and children's, secondary to head trauma but there exist possibility of missed diagnosis in childhood and patient presenting in adulthood with delayed complications. Hence timely diagnosis and prompt management is mandatory.
CASE SUMMARY: A 26 years old female presented two decades later with bony scalp swelling associated with neurological complaints and cosmetic deformity. In depth history and workup diagnosed it a growing skull fracture. Patient underw

Depressed skull fracture commonly results from trauma and usually occurs following high-speed impact with a small object. The outer and inner tables of the skull typically break concurrently. We present a case of depressed skull fracture involving only the inner table. The case resulted in a good outcome with only conservative treatment, although the mechanism remained unclear. Fracture models of cadavers have been the main tool for biomechanical investigation, but this classical method cannot accurately measure mechanical factors. We utilized a computer simulation model to assess the human he

The severity of seizures presenting to the emergency department ranges from benign to life threatening. There are also a wide number of possible etiologies. Computed tomography (CT) emergency imaging may be required at presentation to elucidate a possible cause and assess signs of intracranial trauma. This case describes a serious seizure episode in a young man while on holiday. A CT brain showed a skull fracture as a consequence of seizure-related head trauma but unexpectedly there were image findings consistent with encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis. The important radiological features of

Intracranial tuberculous subdural empyema (ITSE) is extremely rare. To our knowledge, only four cases of microbiologically confirmed ITSE have been reported in the English literature to date. Most cases have arisen in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis regardless of trauma. A 46-year-old man presented to the emergency department after a fall. On arrival, he complained of pain in his head, face, chest and left arm. He was alert and oriented. An initial neurological examination was normal. Radiologic evaluation revealed multiple fractures of his skull, ribs, left scapula and radius. Though he
