A smartphone-controlled amperometric immunosensor for the detection of Pacific ciguatoxins in fish.

Ciguatoxins (CTXs) are marine neurotoxins produced by microalgae of the genera Gambierdiscus and Fukuyoa. CTXs may reach humans through food webs and cause ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP). An immunosensor for the detection of Pacific CTXs in fish was developed using multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified carbon electrodes and a smartphone-controlled potentiostat. The biosensor attained a limit of detection (LOD) and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 6 and 27 pg/mL of CTX1B, respectively, which were 0.001 and 0.005 μg/kg in fish flesh. In the analysis of fish samples from Japan and Fiji,

Gambling on Smartphones: A Study of a Potentially Addictive Behaviour in a Naturalistic Setting.

Smartphone users engage extensively with their devices, on an intermittent basis for short periods of time. These patterns of behaviour have the potential to make mobile gambling especially perseverative. This paper reports the first empirical study of mobile gambling in which a simulated gambling app was used to measure gambling behaviour in phases of acquisition and extinction. We found that participants showed considerable perseverance in the face of continued losses that were linearly related to their prior engagement with the app. Latencies between gambles were associated with the magnitu

Estimation of Respiratory Rates Using the Built-in Microphone of a Smartphone or Headset.

This paper proposes accurate respiratory rate estimation using nasal breath sound recordings from a smartphone. Specifically, the proposed method detects nasal airflow using a built-in smartphone microphone or a headset microphone placed underneath the nose. In addition, we also examined if tracheal breath sounds recorded by the built-in microphone of a smartphone placed on the paralaryngeal space can also be used to estimate different respiratory rates ranging from as low as 6 breaths/min to as high as 90 breaths/min. The true breathing rates were measured using inductance plethysmography ban

SleepAp: an automated obstructive sleep apnoea screening application for smartphones.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep disorder with long-term consequences. Long-term effects include sleep-related issues and cardiovascular diseases. OSA is often diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram. Monitoring can be costly with long wait times for diagnosis. In this paper, a novel OSA screening framework and prototype phone application are introduced. A database of 856 patients that underwent at-home polygraphy was collected. Features were derived from audio, actigraphy, photoplethysmography (PPG), and demographics, and used as the inputs of a support vector m

Influence of smartphone use styles on typing performance and biomechanical exposure.

Twenty-seven subjects completed 2-min typing tasks using four typing styles: right-hand holding/typing (S-thumb) and two-hand typing at three heights (B-low, B-mid and B-high). The styles had significant effects on typing performance, neck and elbow flexion and muscle activities of the right trapezius and several muscles of the right upper limb (p < 0.0001 by repeated-measure analysis of variance). The subjects typed the fewest words (error-adjusted characters per minute: 78) with the S-thumb style. S-thumb style resulted in similar flexion angles of the neck, elbow and wrist, but significantl

A smartphone-integrated portable fluorescent biosensor for on-site detection of antibiotics.

BACKGROUND: The widespread antibiotic residues pose significant risks for public health, food and environmental safety, necessitating rapid on-site monitoring tools, while conventional methods for antibiotics detection often rely on complex instrumentation, limiting their field applicability. This study presented a versatile portable aptasensor utilizing pseudoisocyanine (PIC) fluorescent dye for different antibiotics detection. The sensing mechanism was based on target-induced displacement of the dye from the aptamer-dye complex, resulting in fluorescence quenching. The interactions among PIC

Smartphone-Based Screening for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia in a U.S. Tertiary Center.

OBJECTIVE: Noninvasive screening for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia typically requires dedicated transcutaneous bilirubin devices, which may not be universally available. Smartphone-based screening tools offer a potential alternative but remain incompletely validated in U.S. clinical settings. We evaluated the accuracy of the Picterus Jaundice Pro smartphone application (app) compared with total serum bilirubin (TSB) in a diverse U.S. newborn population. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, cross-sectional study of 74 newborns (gestational age ≥35 weeks, birth weight ≥1,800 g, age >21 hours to 14 days)

Dystextia due to impairment in spatial operation on a smartphone: A case report.

Smartphone texting has become indispensable in modern life. Although dystextia (texting disability) has been reported, dystextia without aphasia or other cognitive impairment remains rare, and its pathophysiology is not fully understood. In Japanese text entry, the consonant is selected first on the screen, and the vowel is then determined by slide direction. Thus, accurate text input likely requires a sequence of processes, including segmentation of morae into consonants and vowels, followed by the spatial operation corresponding to each. Here, we report a patient with dystextia associated wi
