[Snoring and excessive daytime somnolence and risk of cardiovascular diseases].

Snoring and excessive daytime somnolence (EDS) are very common in middle-age adults. The goal of the investigation was to assess links between those symptoms and risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The population studied included 1186 inhabitants of Warsaw (mean age 52 years), participants of the international multicentre study of cardiovascular disease MONICA II, who completed the sleep disordered breathing (SDB) questionnaire. Snoring was reported by 78% of males (48% habitual and 30% occasional) and 59% of females (27% habitual and 32% occasional). Every fourth (26.8%) subject declared

[Effectiveness of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in snoring disorders and obstructive sleep apnea].

We studied the effectiveness of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty under general anesthesia and classical surgery in 26 patients treated surgically for chronic snoring (CS) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Our technique is a variation of the Fujita and Quesada technique that involves partial resection of the palate and uvula with endonasal microsurgery. The criteria for inclusion were age 35 to 47 years and desire to do without C-PAP or Bi-PAP. This device, although effective, produced poor physical and psychological tolerance. After a postoperative follow-up of 3 years, good results were f

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty versus laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in the treatment of snoring.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to compare the efficacy, pain, and complication rates between laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and conventional tonsillectomy and uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. METHOD: Eighty patients who had undergone the laser procedure and 29 the conventional procedure were studied prospectively. Snoring was measured using a new numeric snoring scale. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between groups for final snoring scores, pain, or complication rates. The criteria for selecting uvulopalatopharyngoplasty candidates, which is described, r

Evaluation of an auto-nCPAP device based on snoring detection.

We evaluated an auto-nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) prototype (MC+; SEFAM, Nancy, France) in which apnoea/hypopnoea detection was disabled and nasal mask pressure vibration detection was the only mode of pressure setting. The device was tested in 15 previously untreated obstructive sleep apnoea patients during a night with polysomnography. We observed that a single night of auto-nCPAP improved the apnoea/hypnoea index (AHI) (12 +/- 21 vs 51 +/- 31 disordered breathing events.h-1 of sleep (mean +/- SD)), the awakening-arousal index (13 +/- 20 vs 40 +/- 26 arousals.h-1 of slee

Clinical trial of an oral vestibular shield for the control of snoring.

Stock intra-oral vestibular shields of a heat malleable, semiflexible ethylene vinyl-acetate material were adapted at chairside to the mouths of 77 chronic snorers. The effectiveness of the shield in controlling snoring was assessed eight to ten weeks after fitting. 77.9 per cent of subjects benefitted from wearing the device. Of the subjects who failed to benefit nine (11.7 per cent) appeared to have nasal or naso-pharyngeal obstruction. A further five (6.5 per cent) abandoned the clinical trial due to poor self-motivation while two subjects (2.6 per cent) were unable to tolerate the shield i

Intrapalatine resection (IPR) in the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring.

A conservative surgical technique is proposed as an alternative to the classical uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. The resection is strictly intrapalatine, and careful suturing in three planes seems to lead to complete disappearance of the often unbearable postoperative pain. The soft palate is shortened but nonetheless still resembles a normal soft palate. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) was described by Ikematsu in 1952. This method has taken on a new lease of life in recent years. Its efficacy is generally accepted, and its use, espe

Pattern of simulated snoring is different through mouth and nose.

Cineradiography of the pharynx during simulated snoring was done in 6 healthy volunteers, and supraglottic pressure and flow rate were recorded in 12 others. We observed, immediately before snoring, a decrease in the sagittal diameter of the oropharynx followed, during snoring, by high-frequency oscillations of soft palate and pharyngeal walls. The pattern of soft palate oscillations was different while snoring through the nose or mouth. During inspiratory snoring through the nose, the soft palate remained in close contact with the back of the tongue and only the uvula presented high-frequency

Electrocardiographic signs of pulmonary hypertension in children who snore.

Two children presented with sleep disturbances due to enlarged tonsils and adenoids. One child died during induction of anaesthesia, and postmortem examination showed hypertrophy of the right ventricle and atrium. As a result a prospective survey was carried out of children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy, or both. During a nine-month period an electrocardiogram was taken in 92 children. Three electrocardiograms (3.3%) showed evidence of right heart strain. The children with abnormal electrocardiograms had symptoms of sleep disturbance with apnoea, snoring, and daytime somnolence. Associations between snoring and dental sleep conditions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It is important for dentists to know if the presence of snoring is associated with the presence of other dental sleep conditions (e.g. obstructive sleep apnea [OSA], sleep bruxism [SB], gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD], xerostomia and oro-facial pain). If so, dentists could play a significant role in the early recognition and management of these conditions. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aimed to: (i) investigate the associations between the presence of snoring and the presence of other dental sleep conditions; and (ii) determine if it is clinically relevant that dentist

Laryngopharyngeal reflux and primary snoring: a pilot case-control study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Laryngopharyngeal reflux has been implicated as a causative factor in the aetiology of sleep related breathing disorders. However there are no reports on the association of this disorder and primary snoring in the absence of obstructive sleep apnoea. This study was undertaken to investigate any link between primary snoring and the presence of laryngopharyngeal reflux. METHODS: A matched case-control study was performed in a district general Ear Nose Throat outpatient population in the United Kingdom. Twenty six patients referred for snoring without sleep apnoea (cases) were

Parent versus teacher report of daytime behavior in snoring children.

PURPOSE: Problematic behavior is widely reported in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Daytime behavior is an important component in the evaluation of clinical history in SDB; however, there is a reliance on parental report alone, and it is unclear whether reports by teachers will aid diagnosis. METHODS: We assessed sleep and behavior reported by both parents and teachers in 19 children with SDB and 27 non-snoring controls. All children were screened for prior diagnoses of other medical and/or behavior and learning disorders and underwent polysomnography and both parental and tea

Acoustic changes in voice after surgery for snoring: preliminary results.

All surgical procedures for treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea modify the anatomical structure of the upper airways and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract; this can lead to a modification in voice quality. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible modifications of the fundamental frequency (F0) and of the frequency and amplitude of the first (F1) and second (F2) formants of the 5 Italian vowels after different surgical procedures for snoring, to verify if and how these operations can influence voice quality. A total of 40 snoring or obstructive sleep apnoe

Snoring and excessive daytime somnolence among Polish middle-aged adults.

There is considerable interest in the association of snoring and health consequences that have been linked to more severe sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. The goal of this investigation was to assess the independent association of heavy, habitual snoring and daytime sleepiness. For this, a cross-sectional, population based study of snoring, sleepiness and other factors was conducted using the Warsaw sample of the Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants of Cardiovascular Diseases (MONICA) study, a population-based multicentre study of cardiova
