From novice to professional: comparing professional identity formation in undergraduate medical students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Professional identity formation (PIF) is central to medical education, shaping students into competent and ethical practitioners. Despite its recognized importance, data on PIF's cross-sectional variation across year groups in Pakistani undergraduate medical education remain limited. This study assessed PIF across all five MBBS years and examined associations with academic year group and gender. METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted (November 2021-April 2022) at Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry, Karachi. All 450 MBBS students (years one to five) were

Examining social identity transition from a relational perspective: a qualitative study across treatment and non-treatment pathways.

BACKGROUND: Relational rather than individualistic understandings of recovery in the context of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems have gained recognition. Social identity models, such as the Social Identity Model of Recovery (SIMOR) highlight recovery as a process of social identity transformation. However, these developments are primarily grounded in treatment and peer support settings, potentially underemphasizing the complex dynamics of social identity processes across alternative recovery pathways. Informed by critical drug studies and a relational recovery perspective, the current stu

Searching for Autonomy before the Transition to Higher Education: How do Identity and Self-Determined Academic Motivation Co-Evolve?

Identity and academic motivation are particularly at stake before the major transition to higher education. However, few studies have explored their changes and their longitudinal bidirectional links. To fill this gap, a three-wave study from the end of the 11th grade to the end of the 12th grade was conducted to explore changes in identity processes and academic motivation and to investigate how they might be interconnected over time. 599 adolescents (mean age 17.4; 59% girls) completed questionnaires containing measures about identity processes and three types of academic motivation: autonom

Becoming more egalitarian: A longitudinal examination of Mexican-origin adolescents' gender role attitudes.

The current study examined the trajectory of gender role attitudes of 471 Mexican-origin adolescents (236 girls, 235 boys) from 5th grade (Mage = 10.86 years) to 11th grade (Mage = 16.75 years), investigating how situating identities (i.e., gender, nativity, SES), ethnic identity (i.e., ethnic pride), and familial context (i.e., parents' attitudes) contributed to adolescents' gender role attitudes across time. Participant interviews were conducted every other year, resulting in 4 waves of data. Most parents (96%) were Mexico natives, with an average immigration age of 18.16 years for fathers a

"A feeling of connectedness": perspectives on a gentle yoga intervention for women with major depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common and debilitating health conditions in women in the United States and worldwide. Many women with MDD seek out complementary therapies for their depressive symptoms, either as an adjunct or alternative to the usual care. The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences of women who participated in a yoga intervention for their depression. The findings from this interpretive phenomenological study are derived from interviews with and daily logs by 12 women with MDD who took part in an 8-week gentle yoga intervention as part of a

'DSM-V is taking away our identity': the reaction of the online community to the proposed changes in the diagnosis of Asperger's disorder.

This article considers the fate of Asperger's disorder in the light of proposals for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) to collapse Asperger's disorder along with other pervasive developmental disorders into a general spectrum of autism. It is argued that a powerful lay and scientific culture has evolved around the concept of Asperger's disorder, which has found a particularly compelling voice over the last decade in the online Asperger community, with websites such as Wrong Planet recruiting tens of thousands of members. In order to assess the impact of these

Automatic activation of adolescents' peer-relational schemas: evidence from priming with facial identity.

This study provides experimental evidence for automatic, relationship-specific social information processing in 13-year-old adolescents. Photographs of participants' liked, disliked, and unknown peers were used as primes in an affective priming task with happy and angry facial expression probes and in a hypothetical vignette task. For the affective priming, reaction times were faster for congruent than for incongruent prime-probe pairs when the prime visibility was high and the prime-probe stimulus onset asynchrony was long. In the vignette task, participants attributed more hostility toward t

Fragmented identities, frustrated politics: transsexuals, lesbians and 'queer'.

This paper seeks to explore the complex position transsexualism has in relation to a range of personal identities and identity politics. In recent years there has been considerable debate over 'borderline identities' particularly between lesbians, transgenderists, and FTM and MTF transsexuals who transgress the identity category 'lesbian.'2 Stronger political affiliations between transsexuals, lesbians and feminists are argued for, and a greater recognition of the futility in attempting to demarcate the infinitely blurred ontological boundaries between 'sex,' gender and sexuality. Rather, we s

Anti-black prejudice as a function of exposure to the negative behavior of a single black person.

The authors examined whether the negative behavior of 1 Black male would influence White participants' perceptions of Black Americans and behavior toward another Black person. In Study 1, it was found that participants in the Black-negative condition tended to stereotype Blacks more than participants in the Black-control condition did. It was also found that participants who had observed a negative behavior, whether it was performed by a Black or a White confederate, avoided a subsequently encountered Black person more often than did participants in either the positive condition or the control

The roles of racial identity exploration and critical reflection in white young adults' commitment to social justice and racial justice.

White young adults in the United States often face challenges in developing anti-racist values and commitments, given that their distal and proximal contexts of development are fundamentally shaped by racist ideologies, such as white normativity and supremacy. Yet little is known about how some white young adults, despite these challenges, form life goals centered on social justice and racial justice-defined here as critical purpose. Drawing on frameworks of ethnic-racial identity, white racial identity development, and critical consciousness, this study investigated how white racial identity

From silenced to connected: measuring language-based identity expansion through digital media.

BACKGROUND: Social media have become a central arena for identity construction, particularly for minority communities whose languages and cultures have been historically marginalized. Drawing on self-expansion theory, this study examines how social media facilitate language-based identity expansion within the Kurdish community in Türkiye. Despite long-standing suppression of the Kurdish language and culture, digital platforms provide new spaces for linguistic reconnection, cultural expression, and the reinforcement of collective identity. While self-expansion theory has traditionally focused o

Social capital and the social formation of health-related preferences and behaviours.

Social capital appears to be an important determinant of health production and health utilization and demand. However, there is limited evidence on the mechanisms underlying this relationship. In this article we draw on the evidence and insights reported in this special issue along with findings from the economic and other social science literature to develop a discussion on the explanations of the likely (behavioural) mechanisms that underpin the connection between social capital and health. An important and under-explored influence mediating the relationship between social capital and health

Myopic social prediction and the solo comparison effect.

Four experiments explored the psychological processes by which people make comparative social judgments. Each participant chose how much money to wager on beating an opponent on either a difficult or a simple trivia quiz. Quiz difficulty did not influence the average person's probability of winning, yet participants bet more on a simple quiz than on a difficult quiz in the first 3 experiments. The results suggest that this effect results from a tendency to attend more closely to a focal actor than to others. Experiment 4 directly manipulated focusing; when participants were led to focus on the

A multilevel analysis of the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious people.

We investigate the interpersonal behavior of socially anxious (SA) and non-socially anxious (NSA) individuals at three different levels of analysis, focusing on the dimensions of warmth and dominance. Study 1 examines self-reported general interaction styles, Study 2 explores behavior occurring within the context of a single interaction, and in Study 3 we focus on the performance of a single conversational act (a disagreement). Studies 1 and 2 adopt the framework of Interpersonal Circumplex Theory (IPC; Kiesler, 1983), which is well suited for studying trait-level and interaction-level social

The effect of major identity on depression among Chinese university students: A moderated mediation model.

The mechanisms and boundary conditions through which major identity affects university students' depression remain unclear. To fill this gap, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between major identity and university students' depression, revealing the mediating role of self-esteem in this relationship and the moderating role of perceived social support. A total of 436 Chinese university students participated in this study. The results showed that major identity was significantly and negatively related to depression and significantly and positively related to self-esteem. Self-e

Intergroup Context Moderates the Impact of White Americans' Identification on Racial Categorization of Ambiguous Faces.

We examined how the number of groups in a categorization task influences how White Americans categorize ambiguous faces. We investigated the strength of identity-driven ingroup overexclusion-wherein highly identified perceivers overexclude ambiguous members from the ingroup-proposing that, compared with dichotomous tasks (with only the ingroup and one outgroup), tasks with more outgroups attenuate identity-driven ingroup overexclusion (a dilution effect). Fourteen studies (n = 4,001) measured White Americans' racial identification and their categorizations of ambiguous faces and manipulated th

The four I's of adolescent transition in type 1 diabetes care: A qualitative study.

AIMS: To explore adolescent perspectives on programme design in the transition to adult care. METHODS: We conducted five focus groups on adolescents with type 1 diabetes nearing the age of transition to adult care. Study participants also completed an embedded survey where they rated a wide range of potential transition interventions. Focus group transcripts were analysed with three iterations of line-by-line coding to triangulate themes and subthemes. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: Individualization-how to personalize the transition experience (having choices in the transition experi

Ethnic identity and substance use in multiracial youth: the moderating role of support networks.

Background: Substance use in multiracial adolescents exceeds rates identified in the general population. Despite this fact, there is limited research examining risk and protective factors for multiracial substance use. Objectives: The current study examined the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between ethnic identity and substance use in a sample of multiracial adolescent youth. Methods: Multiracial youth (N = 523) completed a survey that asked questions related to their ethnic identity, perceived social support, and substance use. A series of path analyses were conducte

The effect of social dominance orientation on perceptions of corporal punishment.

Previous research has suggested the use of corporal punishment is widely endorsed in our society (Straus, 2000; Straus & Stewart, 1999). Furthermore, perceptions of what constitutes corporal punishment vary. The present study examined social dominance orientation (SDO) and age of child as potential factors that may influence perceptions of what is viewed as corporal punishment versus physical abuse. The sample consisted of 206 undergraduate students enrolled at a Rocky Mountain University. A series of regressions were used to examine the relationships between SDO and six forms of punishment. F
