Identifying early-life, environmental, and social stressors as key predictors of U.S. respiratory failure mortality: a machine learning study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional risk factors like smoking and air pollution remain insufficient to explain the persistent geographical variation in respiratory failure mortality across the United States, with significantly higher mortality observed in specific regions such as the Mississippi River Basin. METHODS: We conducted a state-level ecological study using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) mortality data and 68 socio-environmental risk factors from Global Burden of Disease (GBD). Predictive modeling leveraged 12 machine l

Using explainable machine learning to elucidate social and neurobehavioral risk factors linked to nonmedicinal opioid use in young adults.

Nonmedicinal opioid use (here defined as > 5 lifetime uses of illicit opioids or nonmedical use of prescription opioids) can be a precursor to Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). The risk factors underlying opioid misuse are likely complex and have not been well-described empirically. Here, we generated an exploratory, highly dimensional model of risk factors for nonmedicinal opioid use. We hypothesized that factors from the triadic model of addiction, which links alterations in reward processing, cognitive function, and negative emotionality to high levels of substance use, will also be important in c

Digital technologies-enhanced older adults health management: developing a five-dimensional extension of social learning theory for community settings.

BACKGROUND: Against intensifying global aging, digital technologies are pivotal in supporting older adults' health management. However, older adults often encounter significant barriers within social learning environments. Bandura's Social Learning Theory (SLT) offers a valuable framework for enhancing older adults' capacity to utilize digital technologies in health management within social settings. This study extends SLT by developing a novel community-based perspective, aligning it more closely with the social learning needs of older adults in digital health management. This study also resp

Reducing the social inequity of neighborhood visual environment in Los Angeles through computer vision and multi-model machine learning.

Aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, the focus on creating safe, sustainable cities and enhancing the wellbeing of individuals across all age groups has become a central aspect of urban planning and environmental management. The environments we live in significantly influence our thoughts, emotions, and interactions with the world around us. Our study aims to unveil the social inequity of citizens' wellbeing, reflected by their perception on neighborhood environment (e.g., feeling of depression), across different social/vulnerable groups (i.e., White, Black, Asian,

The Effect of Valproic Acid Administration on Learning, Social Interaction, and Depression Induced by Withdrawal Syndrome in Morphine-dependent Mice.

BACKGROUND: Opioids can lead to mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and cognitive impairment. Valproic acid (VPA) has neuroprotective effects that can prevent neural degeneration. This study aims to examine the impact of VPA on learning, social interaction, and depression in mice dependent on morphine. METHODS: Subjects were divided into four groups and received injections of saline, VPA, morphine, or a combination of VPA and morphine for eight days. Behavioral tests were conducted on day 8, and then administration of VPA and morphine was stopped, leading to spontaneous withdrawal syndrome.

Social-Emotional Profile of Children with and without Learning Disabilities: The Relationships with Perceived Loneliness, Self-Efficacy and Well-Being.

The current study examined whether perceived social support mediated the effects of loneliness and self-efficacy on well-being among students with or without a learning disability (LD). Participants included 834 elementary, middle, and high school students from Israel (29.6% students with LDs) who completed self-report questionnaires. The results of structural equation modeling indicate that social support mediates the indirect effects of age, gender, loneliness and self-efficacy on well-being. In addition, the results show differences between groups, as non-LD girls noted a higher self-effica

Examination of the safety of pediatric vaccine schedules in a non-human primate model: assessments of neurodevelopment, learning, and social behavior.

BACKGROUND: In the 1990s, the mercury-based preservative thimerosal was used in most pediatric vaccines. Although there are currently only two thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCVs) recommended for pediatric use, parental perceptions that vaccines pose safety concerns are affecting vaccination rates, particularly in light of the much expanded and more complex schedule in place today. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the safety of pediatric vaccine schedules in a non-human primate model. METHODS: We administered vaccines to six groups of infant male rhesus macaques (n = 1

Taking social relationships seriously: lessons learned from the informed consent practices of a vaccine trial on the Kenyan Coast.

Individual informed consent is a key ethical obligation for clinical studies, but empirical studies show that key requirements are often not met. Common recommendations to strengthen consent in low income settings include seeking permission from community members through existing structures before approaching individuals, considering informed consent as a process rather than a single event, and assessing participant understanding using questionnaires. In this paper, we report on a qualitative study exploring community understanding and perceptions of a malaria vaccine trial (MVT) conducted in

How teacher support, peer connection, and embodied meaning-making interact in drama-based social-emotional learning in higher education.

Drama-based social-emotional learning has gained increasing attention in higher education, yet participation in embodied activities does not in itself ensure sustained engagement or social-emotional development. Less is known about how teacher support, peer interaction, and embodied participation become interconnected in classroom practice, or about the conditions under which this process may be disrupted. This multisite interpretive qualitative study was conducted across four universities in eastern China. Data were generated through interviews with 24 students and eight teaching staff, suppl

The Cost of Scrutiny: Subclinical Social Anxiety and Performance Context Reshape Frontal-Midline Theta Network Reconfigurations during Probabilistic Learning.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) oscillations have been implicated as a key neural mechanism underlying these learning biases. Here, we combined a dynamic network neuroscience approach with computational modeling to investigate how FM-theta oscillatory activity coordinates large-scale functional network interactions on a trial-to-trial basis during feedback-guided learning. Additionally, we examined how these neural dynamics are associated with social anxiety across different social contexts. A sample of

Teachers' Perspectives on Social Media Networking for Indonesian Language Learning in Inclusive Elementary Schools: A Multi-Method Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Effective learning strategies are essential for inclusive elementary classrooms, particularly in Indonesian language education, where students have diverse learning needs and digital access levels. Although social media has become a common educational tool, its structured use as a pedagogical model for inclusive learning in Indonesian schools is limited. Previous studies have largely focused on general online learning, leaving a gap in understanding how social media can foster inclusion and language skill development. This study addresses that gap by exploring how social media can

Compassionate mind training as school-based social and emotional learning: extension to younger pupils and effects of programme dosage.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from primary/elementary to high-school education is associated with increased mental health difficulties, especially anxiety. Previously, compassionate mind training (CMT) has been demonstrated to stem anxiety increases and improve prosocial behaviours in children aged 11-12. We extended this research by exploring CMT training effects via two further studies: (i) younger children aged 10-11, and (ii) a shortened/compacted delivery length with children aged 11-12. METHOD: We used a mixed methods convergent parallel approach, collecting both quantitative and qualita

Alzheimer's disease risk prediction from clinical and social determinants of health: a machine learning cohort study in UK Biobank.

OBJECTIVES: Social determinants of health (SDOH) may improve Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk prediction by capturing upstream contextual risk beyond routinely measured clinical variables. We aimed to develop and validate an accurate, interpretable machine-learning pipeline for AD risk prediction in UK Biobank using routinely collected data. METHODS: Using data from 13 076 participants in the UK Biobank, we developed an automated machine-learning pipeline for AD risk prediction with feature selection and a C5.0 boosted-tree classifier. Data were split into training, development and test sets (7:

Escalating demand for learning during adolescence impairs social interaction by hyperactivating midbrain dopamine neurons in young adulthood male mice.

Chronic stress during adolescence is a major risk factor for adult psychiatric disorders, yet the long-term impact of learning-related aversive stress remains poorly understood. This study established an mice model of learning demand stress by escalating the fixed ratio (FR) number of escape responses to foot shocks in a negative reinforcement learning paradigm. Remarkably, mice that performed proficiently (high-susceptible, H-Su) during this aversive learning task in adolescent developed late-onset impairments in social interaction and novel object recognition in young adulthood, whereas poor

The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on UK social workers working with people with learning disabilities: A mixed methods study.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health and wellbeing of social workers working with people with learning disabilities has not been fully explored. This paper reports findings from a large United Kingdom study that surveyed health and care workers in six phases of the pandemic and shortly thereafter (2020-23) relating to 310 social workers who worked with people with learning disabilities. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed that these social workers experienced a decline in wellbeing over the pandemic period, but this lessened as time passed. Logistic regression showed that social worker

Prescriptive Predictors of Mindfulness Ecological Momentary Intervention for Social Anxiety Disorder: Machine Learning Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trial Data.

BACKGROUND: Shame and stigma often prevent individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) from seeking and attending costly and time-intensive psychotherapies, highlighting the importance of brief, low-cost, and scalable treatments. Creating prescriptive outcome prediction models is thus crucial for identifying which clients with SAD might gain the most from a unique scalable treatment option. Nevertheless, widely used classical regression methods might not optimally capture complex nonlinear associations and interactions. OBJECTIVE: Precision medicine approaches were thus harnessed to examin
