The neurocognitive impact of loneliness and social networks on social adaptation.

Social adaptation arises from the interaction between the individual and the social environment. However, little empirical evidence exists regarding the relationship between social contact and social adaptation. We propose that loneliness and social networks are key factors explaining social adaptation. Sixty-four healthy subjects with no history of psychiatric conditions participated in this study. All participants completed self-report questionnaires about loneliness, social network, and social adaptation. On a separate day, subjects underwent a resting state fMRI recording session. A hierar

Social influences normalize gambling-related harm among higher risk gamblers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social influences are key drivers of gambling, and can begin in youth through parental modeling and facilitation. Over time, social influence from friends and colleagues also becomes important. Social network analysis provides a method to measure the combined nature of these social influences. This study aimed to compare social influences across gambling risk groups, by examining key characteristics of the social networks, among Australian adults. METHODS: A total of 784 respondents (egos) reported their demographics, gambling behavior and gambling risk, as well as those

Social network and social support influence mortality in elderly men. The prospective population study of "Men born in 1914," Malmö, Sweden.

The objective of this study was to determine whether there is an association of all-cause mortality with different aspects of social network, social support, and social influence. The study sample (n = 621) was a random half of all male residents of Malmö, Sweden, born in 1914, of whom 500 (80.5%) were interviewed and examined in 1982-1983. On the basis of a model with carefully defined and well-differentiated concepts integrated in a theoretic framework of social resources, an instrument was developed to measure different aspects of social network, social support, and social influence. Using Social Networks and Model Simulations of Social Disruption to Identify Alternative Translocation Strategies for the Endangered Cooperative-Breeding Floreana Mockingbird.

(1) The importance of social structure and dominance hierarchies in cooperative-breeding species is well-documented, yet the inclusion of these processes in conservation translocation planning remains limited. Here, we empirically measured the social networks of three populations of the endangered Floreana Mockingbird, then used model simulations of different translocation scenarios to test the effects of social disruption on the social networks. (2) We used social network analysis and Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs) to characterise dominance hierarchies, group structure, and the conse

Power of Inter-Chapter Distance: Shaping Social Movement Networks in Extinction Rebellion Australia.

This paper examines how distance impacts the network of connections across social movement organisations. Much of the social movements research on scale and spatiality has focused on micro (the immediate vicinity in protest events) and macro levels (local-global connections), with limited attention paid to the role played by distance in shaping networks across a single country context. To examine this phenomenon, we analyse Extinction Rebellion Australia: an environmental social movement organisation that diffused from the densely populated and spatially compact UK to Australia, with its geogr

From mate to hate? Prejudice socialization in friendship networks.

Through socialization in friendship networks, individuals' levels of prejudice become more similar to their friends' levels of prejudice over time. However, the potential consequences of socialization for prejudice in a social environment remain unknown, as research has yet to explore the size of the socialization effect. Using longitudinal social network analysis and empirically informed network simulations, the present research investigated the extent to which socialization among low-, medium-, and high-prejudice individuals relates to changes in attitudes toward ethnic and religious outgrou

Community social networks, individual social participation and dietary behavior among older Japanese adults: Examining mediation using nonlinear structural equation models for three-wave longitudinal data.

Community social networks positively affect older adults' dietary behavior, but the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. This study investigated if the relationship between community social networks and dietary behavior is mediated by social participation, and whether the influence of community social networks differs across sociodemographic groups. We conducted a cross-lagged panel mediation analysis employing nonlinear structural equation modeling using panel data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), a longitudinal study of Japanese older adults in 2010, 2013, and 2016,

Error Estimation of Signed Networks Based on Expectation-Maximization Algorithm.

Data obtained from experiments and surveys in human social systems are inevitably influenced by systematic measurement errors, and network data are no exception. Despite the prevalence of error in social network data, current research often lacks rigorous estimation of its expected precision, which may lead to biased conclusions. Signed networks, which encode both positive and negative relationships, constitute an important component of network science, and conducting measurement error analysis on them can substantially enhance the accuracy of social network analysis. This paper proposes a set

A comparison of spatial and social clustering of cholera in Matlab, Bangladesh.

Infectious diseases often cluster spatially, but can also cluster socially because they are transmitted within social networks. This study compares spatial and social clustering of cholera in rural Bangladesh. Data include a spatially referenced longitudinal demographic database, which consists of approximately 200,000 people and laboratory-confirmed cholera cases from 1983 to 2003. Matrices are created of kinship ties between households using a complete network design and distance matrices are also created to model spatial relationships. Moran's I statistics are calculated to measure clusteri

Social networks of older adults living with HIV in Finland.

The aim of this study was to explore the social networks of older adults living with HIV. Interviews were conducted with nine individuals aged 50 or older living with HIV in Helsinki, Finland. Analysis of transcripts was analysed by inductive qualitative content analysis. Results indicated that these participants' networks tended to be large, including those both aware and unaware of the participants' health status. Analysis identified three main themes: large multifaceted social networks, importance of a support group, and downsizing of social networks. Support received appeared to be of grea
