Differentiating symptoms of social anxiety and depression in adults with social anxiety disorder.

Although studies have suggested a strong overlap between social anxiety disorder and depression, this is the first study to examine the ability of commonly used measures to differentiate symptoms of these disorders in a sample of clients with social anxiety disorder. Structural equation modeling revealed that commonly used measures of social anxiety and depression can differentiate the two constructs, rather than simply reflecting a single construct of overall distress. Logistic regression analyses indicated that scores on depressive symptom measures could predict which socially anxious client

Social interpretation bias and generalized social phobia: the influence of developmental experiences.

Patients with generalized social phobia (N = 42) and non-phobic community controls (N = 42) engaged in a social interaction with an experimental assistant whose behavior was used to create either a positive or an ambiguous social environment. Participants then rated their own performance and their partner's behavior. As a group, social phobic patients displayed negatively biased self-judgments, but failed to display biased social interpretations. Among the social phobia group, a social developmental history marked by parental hostility was associated with negative interpretations of partner be

Social support and social strain among husbands and wives: a multilevel analysis.

In response to recent calls in the literature for within-person examinations of social support processes over time, this study explores the relationships of spousal support, spousal strain, and well-being among husbands and wives, both within the same day and across days. Eighty-three couples were interviewed and completed a structured diary twice daily for 1 week. The results of multilevel hierarchical modeling suggest that both spousal support and spousal strain made significant, independent contributions to concurrent negative affect, although only spousal support was a significant predicto

Social anxiety in childhood: the relationship with self and observer rated social skills.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety of childhood is a common and pervasive problem. Traditional approaches to treating these difficulties have focused on providing afflicted children with social skills training. This approach has met with some, but not complete success. Recent reconceptualisations of social anxiety in the adult literature have emphasised the role of negative cognition regarding one's own social skills. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that a misperception of social skills, rather than a skills deficit per se, may be most pertinent to the understanding of social anxiety. This stud

The primate amygdala and the neurobiology of social behavior: implications for understanding social anxiety.

The amygdala has long been implicated in the mediation of emotional and social behaviors. Because there are very few human subjects with selective bilateral damage of the amygdala, much of the evidence for these functional associations has come from studies employing animal subjects. Macaque monkeys live in complex, highly organized social groups that are characterized by stable and hierarchical relationships among individuals who engage in complex forms of social communication, such as facial expressions. Understanding the role of the amygdala in animals that display a level of social sophist

[Nongovernmental organizations and AIDS, social intervention, and new ties in social solidarity].

Starting with a brief contextual analysis of the social scenario in which the AIDS epidemic is occurring in Brazil, the article focuses on the formation of the country's first nongovernmental organizations in the struggle against AIDS. There are peculiarities to AIDS NGOs to the extent that they display an ambivalence between the characteristics of a professional institution and a lobbying group, apart from the fact that dealing with sexuality and death breaks down the line between the public and the private spheres. The case in point is the Grupo Pela Vidda (For Life Group) in Rio de Janeiro,

Social support, social dysfunction and stressful life events in neurotic patients.

The relationship between social support, stressful life events and psychosocial dysfunction was studied in 197 neurotic patients comprising 65 patients of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, 81 of Dysthymia and 51 of Dissoiative (conversion) Disorders. It was seen that Dysthymics perceived themselves to have significantly less social support in comparison to Generalized Anxiety or Dissociative Disorders patients. Significant correlations between social support and life events and social support and dysfunction were also obtained and it was observed that lack of social support is negatively correlate

Social support and social action organizing in a "grey ghetto": the tenderloin experience.

The Tenderloin Senior Outreach Project (TSOP) is presented as a case study of effective community-based organizing among the isolated elderly in one of America's large "grey ghettos." Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social support theory and Freire's "education for critical consciousness," the Project has attempted to address the interrelated problems of poor health, social isolation and powerlessness endemic among the elderly in Single Room Occupancy hotels. The Project's metamorphosis is traced from a university-sponsored community development effort to a community-controlled organi

Social capital in health research ‒ Conceptual model of disease-specific social capital based on disease-specific social networks.

OBJECTIVES: Social capital is a resource derived from human social structure comprising social networks and their cognitive contents, such as values and norms, e.g., trust. These are old psychological concepts, but psychological theories and conceptualization are often ignored in studying social capital in public health research. STUDY DESIGN: A narrative review-based analysis of the components of social capital from a psychological perspective. METHODS: We examine the health-enhancing components of individual-level social capital by incorporating corresponding psychological concepts. We pro

Social support, social constraint, and psychological adjustment in patients with colorectal cancer.

Cancer patients' social networks, particularly their spouses or romantic partners, can promote or undermine their psychological adjustment. This study examined the relative associations of partner social support and social constraint with patients' psychological adjustment and further tested gender's moderating role in these associations. Participants were 124 patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (M age = 56.6 years, 34% female), who completed questionnaires on perceived spousal social support and social constraint, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction. Findings revealed that

Electrophysiological evidence of processing social threat words in social anxiety participants.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with social anxiety (SA) tend to show heightened attentional biases toward socially threatening information. However, it remains unclear at which stages of neural processing these biases emerge. This study aimed to clarify how social anxiety modulates the temporal dynamics of processing social threat words. METHODS: Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals were recorded while participants performed an emotional Stroop task, in which neutral and social threat words were presented in sequential blocks (neutral followed by threat). Participants were divided into high-social-anx

The social-cognitive clinician: On the implications of social cognitive theory for psychotherapy and assessment.

We review Bandura's contributions to cognitive-behavioural theory, research and practice. His basic research on the causal role of cognitive processes in social learning was a major factor in the emergence of cognitive-behavioural therapies in the 1970s. His investigations on observational learning and self-efficacy beliefs led to the development of guided mastery therapy, a specific cognitive-behavioural intervention for anxiety disorders. His research on self-regulatory processes provided an empirical basis for the emergence of numerous therapies targeting self-regulation. We conclude by dis

Problematic Social Media Use or Social Media Addiction in Pediatric Populations.

With the advent of smartphones and the popularization of social media sites at the beginning of the twenty-first century, children and adolescents have been exposed to a world of virtual interactions in social networking sites that are designed to increase engagement of the user for profit. In this article, we review the epidemiology of use of social media, its addictive features, and potential negative consequences of problematic use, and the research on current interventions known to reduce use. We also give recommendations spanning from the policy to the individual level for children to bui

Social ties and social identification: Influences on well-being in young adults.

Research highlights the positive impact of social connectedness on subjective well-being. In this paper, we test a model in which an identity-based mechanism links a structural form of connectedness (significant social ties) with two psychological well-being outcomes, life satisfaction and self-esteem. Using data from the LIVES Longitudinal Lausanne Youth Study (LIVES-LOLYS, N = 422), a longitudinal mediation path model tests direct and indirect effects, via the strength of social identification, of the number of significant social ties in two life domains (friends and family) on life satisfac

Unpacking Indigenous Social Mobility: Entrepreneurs, Social Networks, and Connections to Culture.

In settler societies, upward social mobility by Indigenous people is seen in the growth of successful professional and entrepreneurial classes where both wealth creation and social power are significant resources. Yet, public and academic discourses perpetuate the belief that social mobility impacts negatively on Indigenous people by placing cultural identity in conflict with capitalist business practices. Using data from an international comparison consisting of interviews with 220 Indigenous entrepreneurs in research sites across three countries, this article shows that the belief is unfound

Social anxiety disorder-associated gut microbiota increases social fear.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a crippling psychiatric disorder characterized by intense fear or anxiety in social situations and their avoidance. However, the underlying biology of SAD is unclear and better treatments are needed. Recently, the gut microbiota has emerged as a key regulator of both brain and behaviour, especially those related to social function. Moreover, increasing data supports a role for immune function and oxytocin signalling in social responses. To investigate whether the gut microbiota plays a causal role in modulating behaviours relevant to SAD, we transplanted the mi

Social trauma engages lateral septum circuitry to occlude social reward.

In humans, traumatic social experiences can contribute to psychiatric disorders1. It is suggested that social trauma impairs brain reward function such that social behaviour is no longer rewarding, leading to severe social avoidance2,3. In rodents, the chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) model has been used to understand the neurobiology underlying stress susceptibility versus resilience following social trauma, yet little is known regarding its impact on social reward4,5. Here we show that, following CSDS, a subset of male and female mice, termed susceptible (SUS), avoid social interaction wi

Social Stability Relates Social Conditions to the Syndemic of Sex, Drugs, and Violence.

The distribution of violence, sexually transmitted infections, and substance use disorders is not random, but rather the product of disease, behavior, and social conditions that co-occur in synergistic ways (syndemics). Syndemics often disproportionately affect urban communities. Studies of syndemics, however, rarely apply consistent measures of social conditions. Here, the construct of social stability (SS) (housing, legal, residential, income, employment, and relationship stability) was evaluated as a consistent measure of social conditions related to sex, drug, and violence exposures in a n
