Computational physiological modeling for lung-specific ventilation and perfusion management in ex vivo lung perfusion.

INTRODUCTION: Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) relies on standardized ventilation and perfusion protocols to evaluate and preserve donor lungs before transplantation. Yet, these protocols overlook graft-specific physiology, leading to variable dead-space ventilation, intrapulmonary shunting, and increased lung injury. METHODS: We developed and validated a computational physiological model (CPM) of lungs on EVLP. The CPM integrates established principles of lung mechanics, gas exchange, and perfusion with clinical input data. It provides mechanistic insight into ex vivo lung physiology and quanti

A Novel Joint Motion Compensation Algorithm for ISAR Imaging Based on Entropy Minimization.

Space targets move in orbit at a very high speed, so in order to obtain high-quality imaging, high-speed motion compensation (HSMC) and translational motion compensation (TMC) are required. HSMC and TMC are usually adjacent, and the residual error of HSMC will reduce the accuracy of TMC. At the same time, under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the accuracy of HSMC and TMC will also decrease, which brings challenges to high-quality ISAR imaging. Therefore, this paper proposes a joint ISAR motion compensation algorithm based on entropy minimization under low-SNR conditions. Firs

Establishment and validation of a FLUKA radiation model for a medical electron linear accelerator room based on a virtual source.

PURPOSE: In Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of medical electron linear accelerator (linac) rooms using FLUKA, time-consuming modeling and simulation of the accelerator head are typically required, and FLUKA cannot directly read the phase space files (PSF) for accelerator heads provided by the IAEA. To address this, this study aimed to establish and validate the accuracy of a radiation model for an accelerator room within FLUKA using a virtual source, thereby enhancing the applicability of FLUKA for the design and evaluation of rooms housing different medical electron linacs. METHODS: The 6 MV ph

Single-Particle Photothermal Microscopy Using On-Chip Silicon Nitride Microring Resonators.

Optical microresonators confine light in time and space, enabling high sensitivity for the detection of small thermal perturbations. We utilized these properties and investigated on-chip integrated silicon nitride microring resonators (MRRs) for single-particle photothermal microscopy. We calibrate the technique using individual nonphotoluminescent carbon nanotubes and determine values for absorption cross-section per atom that agree with literature values. Finite-element simulations are performed to track all relevant thermal gradients. The combination of experiment and simulation allows for

[Genesis of vestibulo-autonomic disorders in space flight].

Some considerations on the mechanisms of vestibulo-vegetative disturbance in space flight are given on the basis of clinical observations, experience of otoneurological clinic, simulation experiments and examinations of cosmonauts. The starting point in these disturbances was a significant fact of blood redistribution in weightlessness and subsequent changes in hemodynamics, metabolism, etc. The body reactions to weightlessness seem to prepare pronounced vestibulo-vegetative reflexes to threshold and subthreshold vestibular stimuli induced by head and body movements in flight. Some aspects of

Ultra-high, Omnidirectional, and Space Service Capability Light-Absorption Surface for Space Optical Systems.

There is a growing demand for ultra-black surfaces for stray light suppression in space optical systems due to their extremely high absorptance. However, developing omnidirectional, high-absorption ultra-black surfaces that meet the harsh requirements of the space service environment remains challenging. This work proposes a design strategy combining light-trapping microstructures with carbon nanotube (CNT) films, in which the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of the films is treated as the surface scattering property of the microstructures, enabling microstructure unit fe

Numerical simulation of the transient transport of inert gases in lung tissue.

A numerical simulation of the transport of xenon gas into healthy and oedematous lung tissue is described. The lung is modelled as four parallel tissue layers; alveolar membrane, interstitial fluid, capillary membrane, and blood, surrounded by a uniform air space. Using a finite difference representation of the governing diffusion equations, the concentration distribution of Xe gas in each of the layers of tissue is obtained for a step change in the Xe concentration in the air space. The effect of a thickening of the interstitial fluid layer, found in pulmonary oedema, on the kinetics of Xe tr

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder show larger preferred social distance in live dyadic interactions.

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We

Infection of disk space secondary to fistula from pelvic abscess.

Disk space sepsis is a recognized complication of spinal surgery, but infection by a penetrating fistula from a retroperitoneal or pelvic abscess is rare. The lack of localizing symptoms, the insidious disease process, and the clinical and myelographic findings simulating a herniated disk syndrome obscure the true diagnosis and make identification of the primary infection difficult. A good result was obtained in this case by laminectomy and drainage of the lumbosacral disk space, followed by a diagnostic fistulogram and evacuation of a large pelvic abscess.

Maintenance of normothermia in the out-of-hospital setting: A pilot comparative crossover study of a foil blanket versus self-warming blanket.

INTRODUCTION: Hypothermia can increase mortality in certain patients. Paramedics apply cotton and foil "space" blankets for warming, yet their effectiveness remains uncertain. This pilot study aimed to evaluate combining cotton blankets with a self-warming blanket versus a combination of cotton blankets and a foil blanket in an out-of-hospital simulation. METHODS: Eight participants were allocated to warming with either two cotton blankets and one foil blanket, or two cotton blankets and one self-warming blanket, with the alternate method applied in a subsequent session. Participants were coo

Simulation-Based Training Models for Cleft Palate Repair: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Simulation-based training is a relatively new inclusion to surgical training curricula, with promises of achieving increased competency while maximizing patient safety. Cleft palate, which contributes significantly to the global burden of surgically treatable diseases, is a challenging repair to learn due to the high level of skill and dexterity required, delicate oral tissues, and limited space of an infant oral cavity. Simulation training can allow cleft palate education to move from an observational to a competency-based learning. Hence, this systematic review presents the models

A Large-Scale Synthetic Benchmark Dataset for Non-Cooperative Space Target Perception.

The automatic, accurate perception of targets in space is a crucial prerequisite for many on-orbit aerospace missions. Therefore, research on perception technologies within spaceborne images is meaningful. The development of deep learning has revealed its potential for application to space target perception. However, implementing deep learning models requires large-scale labelled datasets. Therefore, we build a multitask synthetic benchmark space target dataset, NCSTP, to address the limitations of current datasets. First, we collect and modify various space target models for satellites, space

Use of a prospective space-time scan statistic to prioritize shigellosis case investigations in an urban jurisdiction.

OBJECTIVE: A prospective space-time scan statistic was applied to Chicago's 2002 shigellosis surveillance data to evaluate its utility in objectively describing clusters and assisting in the prioritization of investigations. METHODS: The prospective space-time module of SaTScan, a free software available online, was used to identify "live" clusters of disease, meaning cases that were current as of the date of the analysis and strongly associated in place and time. Fifty-two separate space-time analyses were run; one simulation for each week of 2002. Identified clusters were described in terms

Coil-helix transition in macromolecules. I. Minimal model.

This work presents a minimal coarse-grained molecular dynamics model for the coil-helix transition in polymers. We demonstrate that the addition of a Morse potential to a freely jointed chain with volume and bond potentials is sufficient to reproduce the essential thermodynamic features of the transition. From the simulations performed, the Zimm-Bragg propagation parameter s and nucleation parameter σ are extracted, providing quantitative measures of helical propensity and cooperativity, respectively. To illustrate the versatility of the model, this study systematically varies the spacing betw

The effects of combined environmental factors on the intestinal flora of mice based on ground simulation experiments.

The composition and function of intestinal microbial communities are important for human health. However, these intestinal floras are sensitive to changes in the environment. Adverse changes to intestinal flora can affect the health of astronauts, resulting in difficulties in implementing space missions. We randomly divided mice into three groups and placed each group in either a normal environment, simulated microgravity environment or a combined effects environment, which included simulated microgravity, low pressure and noise. Fecal samples of the mice were collected for follow-up analysis

Embodied simulation, body language, and symbolization: understanding somatic symptoms in psychoanalysis.

Classical psychoanalysis has traditionally focused on uncovering unconscious conflicts through language-the so-called `talking cure`. However, contemporary research underscores the importance of embodied simulation, body language, and their symbolic representation in understanding and addressing patient's somatic symptoms. This occurs particularly when individuals seeking psychological help are unable to use spoken words to express their feelings, which is why communication between patient and therapist takes place at a pre-verbal level, within the space of "intercorporeality." In this paper w
