Spatial Attention Weakly Modulates Visual Responses in the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus.

Visual responses in the cortex are strongly influenced by shifts in spatial attention. This modulation of visual processing includes changes in firing rate, decreased response variability, and decreased interneuronal correlations; all of which are thought to underlie enhanced perception near the center of attention at the cost of perception at other locations. Information from the retina is relayed to primary visual cortex via neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus. Although early studies describe an enhancement of LGN activity with spatial attention, more recent work

Dyslexics are impaired on implicit higher-order sequence learning, but not on implicit spatial context learning.

Developmental dyslexia is characterized by poor reading ability and impairments on a range of tasks including phonological processing and processing of sensory information. Some recent studies have found deficits in implicit sequence learning using the serial reaction time task, but others have not. Other skills, such as global visuo-spatial processing may even be enhanced in dyslexics, although deficits have also been noted. The present study compared dyslexic and non-dyslexic college students on two implicit learning tasks, an alternating serial response time task in which sequential depende

Consequences of severe visual-spatial deficits for reading acquisition: evidence from Williams syndrome.

To further understand the nature of the visual-spatial representations required for successful acquisition of written language skills, we investigated the written language abilities of two individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) a developmental genetic disorder in which the presence of severe visual-spatial developmental delays and deficits has been well established. Using a case study approach, we examined the relationship between reading achievement and general cognitive ability, phonological skills, and visual-spatial skills for the two individuals. We found that, despite the strong similar

Pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials in children with migraine and other primary headache: evidence for maturation disorder?

Recently, evidence for a disturbed maturation of cerebral information processing in migraine came from studies investigating the auditory-evoked contingent negative variation and the auditory-evoked potential from childhood to adulthood. This study is to clarify whether age-dependent development is altered also for the processing of visual stimuli in migraine. Components of pattern-reversal visual-evoked potentials at four different spatial frequencies (which can preferentially activate the magno- and the parvocellular visual system) were compared between children aged 6 and 18 years with prim

Spatial transcriptomic profiling of decalcified murine musculoskeletal samples via Xenium Prime 5K.

Successful generation of high-quality spatial transcriptomics data from murine musculoskeletal tissues has been impeded by the challenge of preserving RNA integrity through the harsh tissue processing steps required for histological sectioning. In particular, the need to thoroughly fix and decalcify mineralized tissues has proven problematic. We detail a comprehensive sample processing pipeline for 3 common murine musculoskeletal tissue samples, enabling high-quality transcript detection via imaging-based spatial transcriptomics using the Xenium Prime 5K platform from 10x Genomics. Alternative brain organization after prenatal cerebral injury: convergent fMRI and cognitive data.

The current study presents both longitudinal behavioral data and functional activation data documenting the effects of early focal brain injury on the development of spatial analytic processing in two children, one with prenatal left hemisphere (LH) injury and one with right hemisphere (RH) injury. A substantial body of evidence has shown that adults and children with early, lateralized brain injury show evidence of spatial analytic deficits. LH injury compromises the ability to encode the parts of a spatial pattern, while RH injury impairs pattern integration. The two children described in th

Leveraging image processing techniques to visualize sub-cellular domains in optical photothermal infrared imaging.

Traditionally, vibrational spectroscopic imaging captures a full spectrum at every pixel, a technique commonly referred to as hyperspectral imaging. With the emergence of high-resolution vibrational imaging methods such as optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy, it has become a widespread practice to perform imaging at specific wavenumber settings instead of acquiring full hyperspectral data cubes to speed up the acquisition process. Yet, regardless of the dimensionality of the data, spectroscopic imaging modalities require elaborate data pre-processing to reduce background noise,

Dissociable effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS reveal distinct functional roles for right parietal cortex in the detection of single and competing stimuli.

Spatial attention can be used to direct neural processing resources to a subset of task-relevant or otherwise salient items within the environment. Such selective processes are particularly important for resolving competition between multiple stimuli. Deficits in processing single stimuli can arise after damage to parietal, frontal and temporal brain regions, as is typical in patients with contralesional spatial neglect. By contrast, deficits in processing multiple competing stimuli may arise specifically following lesions of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), as occurs in the disorder of sp

Representation similarity analysis based on spatial projection: Decoding of semantic congruity with OPM-MEG and EEG.

Semantic processing is one of the core functions of human higher-level cognition. The neural mechanism of the decoding process is attached to great significance for understanding language, cognition, and clinical applications. The key issue in decoding semantic representation is how to enhance the sensitivity of task-related neural signals to effectively distinguish the spatial patterns under different stimuli. However, current studies are limited by the sensitivity to task-irrelevant noise, the trade-offs in spatial and temporal resolution inherent in neuroimaging modalities. Therefore, this

Cognitive correlates of dyslexia, dyscalculia and comorbid dyslexia/dyscalculia: Effects of numerical magnitude processing and phonological processing.

Specific learning disorders (i.e., dyscalculia and dyslexia) are common, as is their comorbidity. It has been suggested that the core cognitive deficit in dyscalculia is an impairment in numerical magnitude processing; similarly, in dyslexia, phonological processing deficits are considered to be the main cognitive deficit. Cognitive theories on comorbid dyslexia/dyscalculia have suggested a number of hypotheses about which cognitive deficits underlie the comorbidity. However, few studies have thus far directly compared the abovementioned cognitive correlates of dyscalculia and dyslexia. In thi

The effect of oppositional parietal transcranial direct current stimulation on lateralized brain functions.

Cognitive functions such as numerical processing and spatial attention show varying degrees of lateralization. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be used to investigate how modulating cortical excitability affects performance of these tasks. This study investigated the effect of bi-parietal tDCS on numerical processing, spatial and sustained attention. It was hypothesized that tDCS would have distinct effects on these tasks because of varying lateralization (numerical processing left, spatial attention right) and that these effects are partly mediated by modulation of sustained

Temporally parallel facilitation of same-colored objects beyond spatial selection.

In a probabilistic spatial cueing experiment, we cued one out of four objects/arcs that were arranged in a circle to test whether the cued arc/object would result in strictly object-based processing restricting facilitation of features to the cued object, or whether we observe global feature-based spread across object boundaries. Four arcs flickered at different frequencies, respectively, to evoke steady state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), allowing to investigate neural temporal dynamics in the early visual cortex following the presentation of the spatial cue. Initially, all arcs had iden

Preparation of Formalin-Fixed, Paraffin-Embedded Bone Marrow Samples for Spatial Transcriptomics Using EDTA-Based Decalcification.

Bone marrow (BM) is a complex and dynamic structure in which spatial relationships influence cell behavior, signaling, and function. Because of this, understanding the full dynamics of cellular interactions requires complementary spatial techniques that preserve and map the architecture of cell populations in situ. Despite significant advances in single-cell technologies that have contributed to understanding the transcriptional heterogeneity of healthy and diseased BM tissue, the spatial organization of different cell types, niche-specific regulatory programs, and their interactions still nee

Impaired face processing in early monocular deprivation from enucleation.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of early monocular enucleation (ME) (surgical removal of one eye) on a high-level spatial visual ability, namely face perception. Early monocular deprivation of pattern vision from disorders such as strabismus, amblyopia, or cataract is associated with impairments in low-level spatial vision. This is inconsistent with studies of early ME that show either equivalent or enhanced low-level spatial vision compared with controls. Impairments on some aspects of face perception (i.e., feature-spacing and holistic face processing, both of which mature later in life

Theta-band functional connectivity in the dorsal fronto-parietal network predicts goal-directed attention.

Functional imaging studies have identified a dorsal fronto-parietal network whose activity reflects shifts of attention in space and is sensitive to the behavioural relevance of stimuli. In patients with severe deficits of spatial attention this network is often structurally preserved. Here, we show that resting-state EEG functional connectivity in the dorsal fronto-parietal network predicts impaired goal-directed processing in stroke patients with spatial attention deficits. Eleven right-hemisphere damaged patients with different degrees of contralesional spatial deficits and sixteen age-matc

Exploring the syndrome of spatial unilateral neglect through an illusion of length.

Both a neuropsychological syndrome (unilateral spatial neglect) and a visual illusion of length (the Brentano version of the Müller-Lyer illusion) bring about a misjudgement of the subjective centre of a horizontal line, with a unilateral shift. In experiment 1 we investigated, in patients with left unilateral neglect, illusory effects of horizontal length, with the aim of exploring the functional and neural basis of horizontal space perception, and the role of visual processing in shaping the patients' bisection performance. Fourteen right-brain-damaged patients with left spatial unilateral n

Regional variation in the inversion effect for faces: differential effects for feature shape, feature configuration, and external contour.

Faces are perceived via an orientation-dependent expert mechanism. We previously showed that inversion impaired perception of the spatial relations of features more in the lower face than in the (more salient) upper face, suggests a failure to rapidly process this type of structural data from the entire face. In this study we wished to determine if this interaction between inversion and regional salience, which we consider a marker for efficient whole-face processing, was specific to second-order (coordinate) spatial relations or also affected other types of structural information in faces. We

Space and time in words: exploring neural overlap and specificity.

BACKGROUND: A common magnitude system-consistently involving the right intraparietal sulcus (IPS)-has been proposed to support the representation of space, time and numerosity. While shared mechanisms are acknowledged, domain-specific contributions have also been suggested. Among these, the role of the right precuneus remains debated, with inconclusive evidence regarding its involvement in spatial and temporal processing. Translating this question into the language domain and within a grounded cognition framework, we investigated the causal contribution of the IPS and precuneus to the processi

The upper-hemifield advantage for masked face processing: Not just an attentional bias.

Recent evidence suggests that face processing may be more robust in the upper visual field (UVF) than in the lower visual field (LVF). We asked whether this UVF advantage is due to an upward bias in participants' visuospatial attention. Participants classified the sex of a UVF or LVF target face that was preceded by a congruent or incongruent masked prime face. We manipulated spatial attention within subjects by varying the predictability of target location across sessions (UVF:LVF ratio of 50:50 on Day 1 and 20:80 on Day 2). When target location was unpredictable, priming emerged earlier in t
