BACKGROUND: Arboviruses are a growing public health concern in Europe, with both endemic and exotic arboviruses expected to spread further into novel areas in the next decades. Predicting where future outbreaks will occur is a major challenge, particularly for regions where these arboviruses are not endemic. Spatial modelling of ecological risk factors for arbovirus circulation can help identify areas of potential emergence. Moreover, combining hazard maps of different arboviruses may facilitate a cost-efficient, targeted multiplex-surveillance strategy in areas where virus transmission is mos

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dengue Fever (DF) is a human vector-borne disease and a major public health problem worldwide. In Mexico, DF and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases have increased in recent years. The aim of this study was to identify variations in the spatial distribution of DF and DHF cases over time using space-time statistical analysis and geographic information systems.
METHODS: Official data of DF and DHF cases were obtained in 32 states from 1995-2015. Space-time scan statistics were used to determine the space-time clusters of DF and DHF cases nationwide, and a geographic informa

Ant supercolonies are the largest cooperative units known in nature. They consist of networks of interconnected nests with hundreds of reproductive queens, where individuals move freely between nests, cooperate across nest boundaries and show little aggression towards non-nestmates. The combination of high queen numbers and free mixing of workers, queens and brood between nests results in extremely low nestmate relatedness. In such low-relatedness societies, cooperative worker behaviour appears maladaptive because it may aid random individuals instead of relatives. Here, we provide a comprehen

Chickenpox is a highly contagious airborne disease caused by Varicella zoster, which affects nearly all non-immune children worldwide with an annual incidence estimated at 80-90 million cases. To analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of the chickenpox incidence in the city of Valencia, Spain two complementary statistical approaches were used. First, we evaluated the existence of clusters and spatio-temporal interaction; secondly, we used this information to find the locations of the spatio-temporal clusters via the space-time permutation model. The first method used detects any aggregation in our

Cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis have been recognized by the WHO as 'Neglected Diseases'. Minimal attention has been paid to the spatial and temporal distribution of disease incidence patterns. Using disease notification data, we detected spatio-temporal clusters of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis across three time periods: (i) 1997-2000, (ii) 2001-2004, (iii) 2005-2008. There was substantial variation in the geographical location and timing of recurrent cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis clusters. Statistically significant (P < 0·05) giardiasis clusters tended to occur in predominantly urban a

BACKGROUND: Spatio-temporal running parameters and their variability help to determine a runner's running style. However, determining whether a change is due to the measurement or to a specific condition such as an injury is a matter of debate, as no recommendation on the number of steps required to obtain reliable assessments exists.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the optimal number of steps required to measure different spatio-temporal parameters and study their variability at different running speeds?
METHODS: Twenty-five runners performed three experimental sessions of three bouts of treadmi

Molecular interactions are at the origin of life. How molecules get at different locations in the cell and how they locate their partners is a major and partially unresolved question in biology that is paramount to signaling. Spatio-temporal correlations of fluctuating fluorescently tagged molecules reveal how they move, interact, and bind in the different cellular compartments. Methods based on fluctuations represent a remarkable technical advancement in biological imaging. Here we discuss image analysis methods based on spatial and temporal correlation of fluctuations, raster image correlati

High-dimensional data with sparse structure and spatio-temporal dependence arise in many scientific domains. We develop a Bayesian feature-extraction framework for spatio-temporal settings that employs Gaussian and Diffused-gamma priors to induce structured sparsity. The modeling framework specifies a general likelihood via Bregman divergence, enabling compatibility with a range of loss functions and measurement models. Posterior computation is carried out via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), and we introduce a two-stage feature-extraction procedure based on posterior samples to stabilize sele

The current practice for assessing neonatal postoperative pain relies on bedside caregivers. This practice is subjective, inconsistent, slow, and discontinuous. To develop a reliable medical interpretation, several automated approaches have been proposed to enhance the current practice. These approaches are unimodal and focus mainly on assessing neonatal procedural (acute) pain. As pain is a multimodal emotion that is often expressed through multiple modalities, the multimodal assessment of pain is necessary especially in case of postoperative (acute prolonged) pain. Additionally, spatio-tempo

BACKGROUND: In 2022, Mato Grosso (MT, Brazil) reported the highest detection rate of new leprosy cases (66.20 per 100,000 inhabitants) among all Brazilian states. Monitoring of leprosy indicators is an important control strategy in hyperendemic areas. We aimed to describe the temporal trends and identify clusters of municipalities according to leprosy surveillance indicators in MT between 2008 and 2022.
METHODS: Data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System were used to analyze new case detection rate of leprosy (NCDR), new case detection rate of leprosy among children aged <15 years (

The COVID-19 pandemic affected Europe unevenly, with surges in infections and deaths fluctuating across different regions and time periods. Hyper-localised hotspots and staggered timelines created intense, asynchronous waves of infections and deaths that distort country-level and cumulative data, obscuring the pandemic's spatiotemporal dynamics through aggregation. Despite extensive research comparing states and analysing subnational variance within individual countries, the detailed subnational and transnational dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic across Europe as a whole have not been comprehe
