The calcium content of human erythrocytes.

1. The calcium content of human erythrocytes, after removal of the buffy coat and washing free from plasma with isotonic sodium chloride, has been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The mean value found for normal subjects was 0.634 mug/ml. of packed erythrocytes (0.0158 mug-atom/ml.). The corresponding values for magnesium and zinc were 79.7 and 20.1 mug/ml., respectively.2. The calcium is considered to be mostly and perhaps exclusively located in the erythrocyte membrane, since, after osmotic haemolysis, the same amount was found in the ghost cells as was present in the eryth

Nutritional, antinutritional, and heavy metal profiles of ethnopoultry botanicals in Central Uganda.

In Central Uganda, smallholder farmers rely on indigenous ethnoveterinary botanicals as phytogenic feed additives (PFAs) for indigenous chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). However, the balance between their nutritional benefits and toxicological risks remains poorly characterized. Following an ethnoveterinary survey in Najjembe sub-county where Capsicum frutescens (ranked 2nd ), Cannabis sativa (3rd ), and Nicotiana tabacum (4th) were prioritized by farmers, this study investigated their nutritional and safety profiles. Aloe vera (1st ) was excluded from analysis due to extensive prior docume

A case of allergic contact dermatitis due to nickel in underground water.

A 26-year-old Korean woman with nickel allergy continued to have recurrent facial lesions even after avoiding the usual sources of nickel. As another possible source of nickel, underground water at her house, which had been used by her for 3 years, was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Nickel contents in 8 different domestic tap waters and another underground water sample were also measured by plasma scan. Nickel contents in the patient's underground water were 9 times higher on average than those in domestic tap water. Patch tests with 2 concentrated underground water samples g

Correlation of serum zinc levels with resistance of cattle to trypanosomiasis.

Zinc, copper and magnesium levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in the serum of 32 cattle (Zebus and Baoulés) which were proven to be sensitive to African trypanosomiasis under field challenge and 45 cattle (Baoulés and Ndamas/Baoulés) which were proven to be resistant. Copper and magnesium levels were similar in all animals but zinc levels were higher in sensitive animals (1.50 ppm) than in resistant ones (1.10 ppm) (p less than 10(-5)); the reported normal levels of serum zinc is 1.00 ppm. These differences persisted on repeated measurements and whether individuals w

[Study of calcium and magnesium in cerebrospinal fluid and its' relation to different neurological diseases (author's transl)].

Calcium and magnesium have been measured in cerebrospinal fluid by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in children. The normal values on 194 C.S.F., obtaining for the calcium x: 5.24 mg. % and s: +/- 0.378 mg. % [50--56 % lower than serum values] and for magnesium x: 2.64 mg. % and s: +/- 0.155 mg. % [19--33 % higher than serum values] are found. Higher values of calcium at birth and on the first year of life and no differences with magnesium are noted. Applying the t-test, between normal values obtained and the different pathological entities, authors find singificant differences on the level

Magnesium levels in serum and erythrocytes of children from Kerala.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium is required in higher quantities, during the phase of rapid growth, in children. Its level in the ground water in Kerala is low. This can cause magnesium deficiency especially in children from the lower socio-economic groups who also suffer from nutritional insufficiency. METHODS: We compared the serum and erythrocyte magnesium levels of school children from high and low (agricultural labourers and fisherfolk) socio-economic groups. These levels were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Body mass indices and haemoglobin levels were used as indirect measu

Sodium and potassium in the lens after exposure to radiation in the 300 nm wavelength region.

The possible change in sodium and potassium concentration in the lens after an in vivo exposure to radiation in the 300 nm wavelength region was investigated. Both lenses from 12 reference rats and from 80 unilaterally exposed rats were examined. The exposed rats were sacrificed in four groups: 6, 24, 72 and 168 h after exposure. The lenticular cation contents were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In exposed lenses the concentration of sodium increases whereas that of potassium decreases as the time after exposure increases. The rates of concentration change decrease as th

Mercury in human maternal and cord blood, placenta, and milk.

Total mercury concentration was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in 100 maternal-umbilical cord blood pairs, 39 placentae, and 32 breast milk samples, all from patients at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The mean maternal and cord blood levels were 1.01 and 1.24 parts per billion (ppb), respectively. Though the difference between maternal and cord values was not statistically significant, the two were significantly correlated with each other, and maternal blood level increased significantly with maternal age. Mean placental and milk concentrations were 2.28 and 0.93 ppb, respe

A sensitive vesicle mediated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of parts per quadrillion levels of beryllium from seawater samples prior to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry determination.

A rapid and highly sensitive vesicle mediated dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure is developed for the determination of parts per quadrillion level of beryllium in seawater and air filter samples for providing its natural background and contamination levels. In this procedure, dioctylsulfosuccinate, an anionic vesicular surfactant and acetylacetone are used as dispersing and chelating agents, respectively. At pH > 9.5, beryllium forms hydrophobic beryllium-acetylacetonate complex spontaneously at room temperature. This complex is selectively filled into the vesicular cavities of
