Fricative Contrast and Coarticulation in Children With and Without Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was, first, to expand our understanding of typical speech development regarding segmental contrast and anticipatory coarticulation, and second, to explore the potential diagnostic utility of acoustic measures of fricative contrast and anticipatory coarticulation in children with speech sound disorders (SSD). METHOD: In a cross-sectional design, 10 adults, 17 typically developing children, and 11 children with SSD repeated carrier phrases with novel words with fricatives (/s/, /ʃ/). Dependent measures were 2 ratios derived from spectral mean, obtained from pe

Auditory evoked potentials: predicting speech therapy outcomes in children with phonological disorders.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether neurophysiologic responses (auditory evoked potentials) differ between typically developed children and children with phonological disorders and whether these responses are modified in children with phonological disorders after speech therapy. METHODS: The participants included 24 typically developing children (Control Group, mean age: eight years and ten months) and 23 children clinically diagnosed with phonological disorders (Study Group, mean age: eight years and eleven months). Additionally, 12 study group children were enrolled in speech therap

Speech disturbances in patients with dystonia or chorea due to neurometabolic disorders.

Speech disturbances are frequent and potentially disabling in patients with dystonia or chorea due to neurometabolic disorders (DCND), but their precise characteristics are poorly documented. We prospectively studied 29 consecutive patients with DCND. A detailed description of their speech patterns was obtained by using the Frenchay dysarthria assessment test and the apraxia of speech evaluation test of Wertz. Gross motor function and intelligibility were each scored on 5-point scales to identify a possible correlation between the severity of the speech and motor disorders. All the patients we

EPG therapy for children with long-standing speech disorders: predictions and outcomes.

This paper reports on a project using a series of single subjects to investigate the effectiveness of using electropalatography (EPG) in treating ten children with persisting speech difficulties of no known organic aetiology. The aims of the project were two-fold, firstly to assess whether the subjects selected benefited from this treatment, and secondly to investigate whether it was possible to predict which children would make maximum improvement. A number of factors were identified as possible predictors for successful EPG therapy and subjects were then ranked according to these predictions

Clinical psychoacoustics in Alzheimer's disease central auditory processing disorders and speech deterioration.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty in speech understanding in the presence of background noise or competing auditory signals is typically present in central auditory processing disorders. These disorders may be diagnosed in Alzheimer's disease as a result of degeneration in the central auditory system. In addition perception and processing of speech may be affected. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A MEDLINE research was conducted in order to answer the question whether there is a central auditory processing disorder involved in Alzheimer's disease. A second question to be investigated was what, if any is the connec

Research on speech motor control and its disorders: a review and prospective.

This paper reviews issues in speech motor control and a class of communication disorders known as motor speech disorders. Speech motor control refers to the systems and strategies that regulate the production of speech, including the planning and preparation of movements (sometimes called motor programming) and the execution of movement plans to result in muscle contractions and structural displacements. Traditionally, speech motor control is distinguished from phonologic operations, but in some recent phonologic theories, there is a deliberate blurring of the boundaries between phonologic rep

The relationship between psychopathology and speech and language disorders in neurologic patients.

Depression, anxiety, and conversion reaction are common in neurologic patients. These disorders can produce neurologic-like symptoms that either mask or intensify those produced by the neurologic disease. This paper reviews clinical and research findings relating psychopathology to the formation and remediation of speech and language disorders in neurologic patients. The need to consider the psychosocial and psychopathological aspects of neurologic communicative disorders, and the link between emotional and communicative processes, are emphasized. Diagnostic criteria for the identification of

Therapy with hypnosis and home video for speech disorders: A case report.

Speech difficulties in children can impair communication, social development, and academic success, often contributing to anxiety. This case report highlights a novel approach combining therapy with hypnosis, patient-recorded videos, and formative physician feedback to improve a child's speech clarity and confidence. In this report, a nine-year-old girl with longstanding articulation difficulties participated in hypnosis sessions and created cooking demonstration videos. These videos served as tools for self-assessment and for receiving targeted physician feedback on speech pacing and clarity.

Screening speech disorders in progressive neurological diseases via long-term average spectrum.

The long-term averaged spectrum (LTAS) may provide a universal method for capturing distinct patterns of dysarthria. This study aimed to evaluate the sensitivity of LTAS descriptors in a broad range of neurological diseases and various types and severities of dysarthria. Four spectral moments of spectral mean, spectral standard deviation, spectral skewness and spectral kurtosis based on LTAS were computed for reading passage collected from 461 speakers, including 306 healthy controls and 155 neurological patients secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD), progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple s

Is atypical rhythm a risk factor for developmental speech and language disorders?

Although a growing literature points to substantial variation in speech/language abilities related to individual differences in musical abilities, mainstream models of communication sciences and disorders have not yet incorporated these individual differences into childhood speech/language development. This article reviews three sources of evidence in a comprehensive body of research aligning with three main themes: (a) associations between musical rhythm and speech/language processing, (b) musical rhythm in children with developmental speech/language disorders and common comorbid attentional

Tongue-palate contact during selected vowels in children with speech sound disorders.

There is evidence that complete tongue-palate contact across the palate during production of vowels can be observed in some children with speech disorders associated with cleft palate in the English-speaking and Japanese-speaking populations. Although it has been shown that this is not a feature of typical vowel articulation in English-speaking adults, tongue-palate contact during vowel production in typical children and English-speaking children with speech sound disorders (SSD) have not been reported in detail. Therefore, this study sought to determine whether complete tongue-palate contact

Altered integration of speech and gesture in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The presence of gesture during speech has been shown to impact perception, comprehension, learning, and memory in normal adults and typically developing children. In neurotypical individuals, the impact of viewing co-speech gestures representing an object and/or action (i.e., iconic gesture) or speech rhythm (i.e., beat gesture) has also been observed at the neural level. Yet, despite growing evidence of delayed gesture development in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), few studies have examined how the brain processes multimodal communicative cues occurring during everyday communic
