Improvement of speech perception following articulatory-target based production training for second language acquisition.

Direct training of articulatory movements can be an effective and efficient tool for second language learning. We have previously developed an articulatory target-based training method using electromagnetic articulography for second language pronunciation. In this training, an estimate of a participant's target midsagittal tongue posture is presented on a display together with the real-time position of their tongue, and used as feedback for adjusting their tongue position to the target position. We showed that Japanese participants improved their pronunciation of American English vowel /æ/, wh

Auditory Working Memory Mediates the Relationship Between Musical Sophistication and Speech-In-Noise Perception.

Understanding speech in noisy environments (SPIN) is an important everyday ability, and engaging in musical activities has been proposed as a factor that may support this ability. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying a potential musical advantage in SPIN perception remain unclear. Here we investigated whether musical sophistication is associated with better SPIN perception in a large population-based sample, and whether this relationship is mediated by auditory working memory (AWM), verbal working memory (VWM), or non-verbal intelligence. We recruited 203 participants and measured SPIN

Speech perception problems in Chinese children with reading difficulties: Insights from acoustic context effects.

OBJECTIVES: The perception of speech sounds is influenced by adjacent acoustic contexts. The present study examined whether Chinese children with reading difficulties could effectively utilize both the preceding (forward) and subsequent (backward) acoustic contexts when identifying stop consonant continua. METHODS: A group of Chinese children with poor reading abilities (n = 34) and an age-matched group of typical readers (n = 34) completed two forward context effect tasks (nonspeech and speech context conditions) and one backward context effect task. The forward context tasks used nonspeech

Predicting Postoperative Speech Perception and Audiometric Thresholds Using Intracochlear Electrocochleography in Cochlear Implant Recipients.

OBJECTIVES: Electrocochleography (ECochG) appears to offer the most accurate prediction of post-cochlear implant hearing outcomes. This may be related to its capacity to interrogate the health of underlying cochlear tissue. The four major components of ECochG (cochlear microphonic [CM], summating potential [SP], compound action potential [CAP], and auditory nerve neurophonic [ANN]) are generated by different cochlear tissue components. Analyzing characteristics of these components can reveal the state of hair and neural cell in a cochlea. There is limited evidence on the characteristics of int

Effects of Segmental and Suprasegmental Speech Perception on Reading in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether suprasegmental speech perception contributes unique variance in predictions of reading decoding and comprehension for prelingually deaf children using two devices, at least one of which is a cochlear implant (CI). METHOD: A total of 104, 5- to 9-year-old CI recipients completed tests of segmental perception (e.g., word recognition in quiet and noise, recognition of vowels and consonants in quiet), suprasegmental perception (e.g., talker and stress discrimination, nonword stress repetition, and emotion identification), and nonverbal intel

Speech Perception in Noise Predicts Oral Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

We examined the relative contribution of auditory processing abilities (tone perception and speech perception in noise) after controlling for short-term memory capacity and vocabulary, to narrative language comprehension in children with developmental language disorder. Two hundred and sixteen children with developmental language disorder, ages 6 to 9 years (Mean = 7; 6), were administered multiple measures. The dependent variable was children's score on the narrative comprehension scale of the Test of Narrative Language. Predictors were auditory processing abilities, phonological short-term m

Visual Temporal Acuity Is Related to Auditory Speech Perception Abilities in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant improvements in speech perception abilities following cochlear implantation, many prelingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) recipients continue to rely heavily on visual information to develop speech and language. Increased reliance on visual cues for understanding spoken language could lead to the development of unique audiovisual integration and visual-only processing abilities in these individuals. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that good CI performers, as indexed by auditory-only speech perception abilities, have different patterns of visual corte

Perception drives production across sensory modalities: A network for sensorimotor integration of visual speech.

Sensory information is critical for movement control, both for defining the targets of actions and providing feedback during planning or ongoing movements. This holds for speech motor control as well, where both auditory and somatosensory information have been shown to play a key role. Recent clinical research demonstrates that individuals with severe speech production deficits can show a dramatic improvement in fluency during online mimicking of an audiovisual speech signal suggesting the existence of a visuomotor pathway for speech motor control. Here we used fMRI in healthy individuals to i

Speech Perception Ability in Noise is Correlated with Auditory Brainstem Response Wave I Amplitude.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty understanding speech in background noise is a common complaint of individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. Recent animal studies suggest this difficulty may be due, in part, to spiral ganglion cell degeneration related to aging or noise exposure. Although auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and standard clinical audiometric tests are minimally affected by neuronal degeneration, the amplitude of wave I of the ABR is correlated to spiral ganglion cell density. PURPOSE: This study hypothesized that wave I amplitude was correlated to speech-in-noise performance

[Perception of atypical antipsychotics' side effects through speech analysis of schizophrenic patients. TALK Study].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia often become non-adherent following negative treatment experiences as antipsychotics'side-effects. The objective of this study was to propose an alternative measure of patients'perception of atypical antipsychotics'side-effects on weight, as weight is a major concern reported by patients. METHOD: We used a computer-assisted method called Alceste, which is a pragmatic analysis of speech. We selected three groups of ten patients respectively treated by three different atypical antipsychotics: aripiprazole, olanzapine and risperidone. Participants were admi

Modelling relations between sensory processing, speech perception, orthographic and phonological ability, and literacy achievement.

The general magnocellular theory postulates that dyslexia is the consequence of a multimodal deficit in the processing of transient and dynamic stimuli. In the auditory modality, this deficit has been hypothesized to interfere with accurate speech perception, and subsequently disrupt the development of phonological and later reading and spelling skills. In the visual modality, an analogous problem might interfere with literacy development by affecting orthographic skills. In this prospective longitudinal study, we tested dynamic auditory and visual processing, speech-in-noise perception, phono

Speech perception in noise for children with auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony type hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of background noise on speech perception in children with auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony (AN/AD) type hearing loss. DESIGN: Open and closed-set speech perception abilities were assessed in 12 school-age children who had been diagnosed with AN/AD in infancy. Data were also obtained from a cohort of subjects with sensorineural (SN) hearing loss and from a group of normal-hearing children. RESULTS: Closed-set speech understanding was more affected by the presence of a competing signal in the hearing impaired than in the normal-hearing subjects. The mean S/N

Psychophysical and speech perception studies: a case report on a binaural cochlear implant subject.

Further improvements in speech perception for cochlear implant patients in quiet and in noise should be possible with speech processing strategies using binaural implants. For this reason, presented here is a series of initial psychophysical and speech perception studies on the authors' first binaural cochlear implant patient. For an approximate matching of the places of stimulation on the two sides, the patient usually reported a single percept when the two sides were simultaneously stimulated. Lateralization was strongly influenced by amplitude differences between the electrical stimuli on t

Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Strength Predicts Musical Perception and Speech-in-Noise Performance in Nonmusicians.

OBJECTIVE: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the cochlea and is implicated in auditory scene analysis. Although musicians often exhibit robust MOC function, it remains unclear whether related auditory advantages stem from innate predisposition or training-induced plasticity. This study investigated the relationship between individual variations in MOC reflex function, musical perception, and speech-in-noise (SIN) performance in nonmusicians. METHODS: Fifty-eight normal-hearing nonmusicians were divided into two groups on the basis of the magnitu

Tinnitus, masked speech perception, and auditory event-related potentials in clinically normal-hearing adults.

Tinnitus can increase stress and anxiety and reduce quality of life. Compared to listeners with normal hearing and no tinnitus, listeners with tinnitus (with or without hearing loss) often have greater difficulty segregating competing speech. Previous studies have investigated neural correlates of tinnitus using the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs). Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) and ERPs were measured in 29 listeners with tinnitus and 25 listeners without tinnitus; all were clinically normal hearing, with pure-tone average (PTA) thresholds <25 dB HL across 500, 1000, 2000,

Using network science to examine audio-visual speech perception with a multi-layer graph.

To examine visual speech perception (i.e., lip-reading), we created a multi-layer network (the AV-net) that contained: (1) an auditory layer with nodes representing phonological word-forms and edges connecting words that were phonologically related, and (2) a visual layer with nodes representing the viseme representations of words and edges connecting viseme representations that differed by a single viseme (and additional edges to connect related nodes in the two layers). The results of several computer simulations (in which activation diffused across the network to simulate word identificatio
