BACKGROUND Nasosinusal papilloma is a benign aggressive tumor. It usually occurs unilaterally in the nasal cavity and can extend to the sinuses. The diagnosis is made by the correlation of findings observed in tomographic and histopathological exams. The recommended treatment is surgical excision with clinical monitoring. Orbital involvement occurs in about 9% of cases of advanced SIP. However, there is no report of cases of a benign tumor that invaded the adjacent soft tissues. Therefore, our objective is to report an unusual case of SIP that bilaterally involved the nasal cavity and maxillar

Agenesis of paranasal sinuses has only been described in case reports of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). As agenesis of paranasal sinuses may contribute to low nasal nitric oxide levels, a common finding in PCD, we speculated that this condition might frequently occur in PCD patients. Patients referred for PCD evaluation were consecutively recruited for 30 months. In addition to standard diagnostic testing for PCD, a computed tomography (CT) scan of paranasal sinuses was performed in all subjects. 86 patients (46 children aged 8-17 yrs) were studied. PCD was diagnosed in 41 sub

Tumours that produce metastases in the paranasal sinuses or sphenoidal sinus are rare; the carcinomas of kidney and lung being the most frequent with this type of metastasis. Distant metastases from differentiated thyroid carcinoma are rare and, moreover, when they metastasize, they do so into lung and bone. We report a patient who had a papillary thyroid carcinoma with metastases into the sphenoidal sinus.

A case of aspergillosis of the sphenoid sinus manifested as an isolated sixth nerve palsy occurred in a 74-year old diabetic woman who had no complaints of headache or symptoms suggestive of sinusitis. A CT scan demonstrated a large mass occupying the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses extending posteriorly to the clivus. There was a calcific density within the opacified sinus and bony erosion of the sphenoid walls and the sella turcica. The patient underwent a sublabial transseptal sphenoidotomy with removal of necrotic material and debridement of the surrounding tissue. Histologic examination reve

Isolated sphenoid sinus disease is a rare entity with severe and potentially life threatening sequela. Because of the proximity of the sinus to the orbit, anatomical defects within the surrounding bony structures can facilitate communication with orbital content, predisposing the patient to substantial visual consequences. We report a case of a 51-year-old immunocompromised male who presented with headache and gradual unilateral decreases in vision. Computed tomography revealed opacification of the left sphenoid sinus accompanied by unusual bony dehiscence of the proximal optic canal. Early re

OBJECTIVE: To report a rare and unique presentation of metastatic breast cancer.
METHOD: Case report and review of related literature.
RESULTS: A 62-year-old female with metastatic breast cancer, who had been free from recurrence for 4 years, presented with diplopia secondary to lateral rectus palsy. This was due to a sphenoid sinus metastasis, which was eroding into her cavernous sinus, resulting in VIth cranial nerve neuropathy.
CONCLUSION: All paranasal sinuses and the orbit are potential sites for metastases. Spread to the paranasal sinuses from breast cancer has been documented previou

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of a fungus ball within a mucocele of the sphenoid sinus and infratemporal fossa.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a mass lesion in the left sphenoid sinus and infratemporal fossa. Endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity was unremarkable. Computed tomography showed a non-enhancing, expansile mass with calcifications in the sphenoid and infratemporal fossa; T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed marked hypointense signals within the sphenoid sinus mass, with an intermediate signal intensity. One hundred and thirteen patients (62 males and 51 females, aged 5-70 years) with chronic sinusitis seen between January 1995 and December 1998 in the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Diseases Clinic of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria are presented. A provisional diagnosis of chronic sinusitis was made if there were at least two of the following signs and symptoms: nasal blockage, nasal discharge, post nasal drip, excessive sneezing or halitosis. The radiographic abnormalities observed include gross mucosal thickening; haziness; complete opacity and air-fluid level. Seventy-e

The sphenoid sinus is the least common site of mucocele of all paranasal sinuses. It is very rare in children, especially in those younger than 12 years when pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus is completed. We report a case of histologically proven sphenoidal mucocele in a 5-year-old child. The child presented with an acute onset of significant visual impairment and headache. His vision gradually improved after trans-nasal sphenoidotomy and drainage of the sinus content with return of complete normal baseline vision after 2 months.

Sphenoidal sinus, clinical anatomy: mean values of measurements and research. The ostium of the sinus is situated 4.8 mm paramedian, 4 mm behind the sphenoid sinus with a width of 13.8 mm. Conchal types were estimated in 3%, presellar types in 23.8%, sellar types in 28.6% and postsellar sinuses in 47.6%. The ostium of the sphenoid sinus has a distance to the anterior wall of the Sella turcica mean = 14.6 mm. Included are length values of the sinus, the prominences in the side wall, and the recessus. Our results are discussed with the results of earlier researchers.

A rare case of oncocytic Schneiderian papilloma originating from the sphenoid sinus characterised, for 3 years, by non-specific symptoms of severe headache, a block of nasal breathing, and deprecating sense of smell was presented by an elderly female patient. Sphenoid sinus functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), with a one-block tumour excision, through an endonasal approach, with a histological study of removed tumour masses, were performed on the patient. Long observation in the post-operative period was necessary, considering the risk of recurrence and malignancy of oncocytic Schneider

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the paranasal sinuses is rare and often presents a diagnostic challenge. It is usually secondary to extension of disease from adjacent bones and is rarely limited to the sinuses. We have described three cases of FD involving the paranasal sinuses, including the first reported case of FD isolated to the sphenoid sinus. A brief update of the clinical aspects, radiographic appearance, diagnosis, and management of craniofacial FD is provided.

The structure of paranasal sinuses in cattle is difficult to understand due to its complexity, age-related changes, and insufficient published data. In this prospective, anatomic study, we described the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses in the Holstein cow using computed tomography (CT) and cross-sectional anatomic slices. Twelve healthy adult Holstein cow heads were used for this study. The heads were scanned using CT, and frozen anatomical sections were taken. The locations, borders, and relationships of the paranasal sinuses were defined on the anatomical sections and CT images. The paranasa

Available data about the size of the different sinuses to date are derived from anatomical or radiological studies. In order to verify or possibly correct the findings of other authors we evaluated the cranial computed tomography (CT)-images of more than 5600 patients. We measured the sex-linked and age-dependent width and length of the four sinuses for both sides in axial sections. For the first time we have a clear picture of the development of the paranasal sinuses for both sexes from birth until the age of 25 years. Our results confirm general ideas concerning the size of the sinuses. More

We report a case of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) associated with optic neuropathy. The visual acuity in the right eye was suddenly reduced to no light perception on awakening in the morning. Fundus examination of both eyes on the same day showed no remarkable changes. Emergency computed tomography showed pan-sinusitis bilaterally and a partial defect of the sphenoid bone on the right side. From the clinical findings, the case was diagnosed as optic neuropathy associated with chronic sinusitis. Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) was performed on the same day, and all of the major sinu

OBJECTIVES: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common chronic disease of the upper airways and has considerable impact on quality of life. Topical delivery of drugs to the paranasal sinuses is challenging, therefore the rate of surgery is high. This study investigates the delivery efficiency of a pulsating aerosol in comparison to a nasal pump spray to the sinuses and the nose in healthy volunteers and in CRS patients before and after sinus surgery.
METHODS: (99m)Tc-DTPA pulsating aerosols were applied in eleven CRSsNP patients without nasal polyps before and after sinus surgery. In addition,
